Dear fellow Bike Radarites (Radarians?),

A thought struck me on the way to work this morning (luckily it was only a thought).

Which type of headgear do you wear whilst commuting?

Now it's your choice what you wear, and to be frank I don't care why you wear it, and please no trolling about the benefits or lack of, of one type over another.

I wear a cycle helmet.

when it's hot nothing, okay well a hair band.

when it's cold and wet and early then i'll use a warm hat though normally only for short routes as otherwise it gets far too warm.

On my commute today I decided to count helmets vs non-helmets. I lost concentration but it was 10-8 to the non-helmet brigade when I stopped. However, this sample size is ridiculously small and meaningless. I'll try again tonight.

    I sometimes wear a headband - it's actually a sweatband, but don't tell anyone!

Normally I wear a helmet, but with the warm weather it's been a nightmare with the sweat, so at the moment: nothing

(I need a new helmet that vents air properly)

I have to cycle through one of the maddest bits of manchester so I wear a helmet every day, although it does get sweaty in the summer (cheapie helmet)

After a previous thread a few months back, I now wear a buff/bandana under my helmet as a sponge.

it varies from area to area much like type of bikes, or how much RLJ etc as you say the sample size is too small etc.

on a club run i'm very much a minority being with out one but other areas you can see a fair few bikes but not many helmets.

For commuting I always wear a helmet. Pootling down the shops or on the tow path I sometimes forgo.

The helmet has come in very handy on at least a couple of occasions. Twice I've rear ended cars by misjudging their deceleration. They both accelerated hard then braked hard with me doing the same behind them except for the decelerating as hard. Both cars were hatch backs and I only came to a complete stop when the top of my (helmeted) head made contact with their rear windows. It's only been twice in 25+ years of cycle commuting so it's not as bad as it might sound.

PS - R_T_A - do you mean 'lady-man' and is that like a Lady-boy?

    I don't wear a helmet for safety
It has a peak on it and keeps off the rain/sun etc
But I don't think of it as safety equipment

I'm not fussy really - I'm married so anything that shows interest is a bonus.

I wear a relatively cheap abus helmet. I get a bit sweaty, but not enough to cause any irritation.

Speaking of RLJing, I saw the greatest version of it yet today. Lights are red and they slowly creep forward while trying to trackstand, green man comes on and they put one foot on the floor and use it to push the bike along to the other side, while still straddled on the bike. They get to the otherside where I'm waiting and put the other foot back on the pedal and begin cycling off. I laughed and said to myself "Well I'm practically walking, so I cant be jumping the light" and to my surprise, they must have heard me and shouted "Exactly!" back at me.

Just a buff worn headband style for suicidally reckless old me; being a sweaty b***ard I need it all year round too.

I wear a helmet with a girls hairband underneath to stop the stream, I've just been out pricing up helmets with bigger holes in.

I'd love to do the cap thing but to keep the wife happy, and so no drivers can use that one against me, I always wear a helmet for the commute.

Helmet. When I'm going quick (as I do on my commute because I'm normally late) the venting seems to suck in enough air that I'm cooler with the lid than without it. I sometimes take it off and hang it on the bars on steep long climbs though.

A lid everytime.....Only time I have not work a helmet was when it was very cold and I put a Lumberjack hat on.....Helmet would not go over it.

Gotta ask yourself the question - "is a simple spill potentially worth ruining your life and the lives of your wife/partner and children?".....Feel like a nobber wearing it, but in traffic it is worth it in the end.

But each to therir own, and I am not gonna get preachy here......(although I probably just have done!) :-)

Since I microwaved my helmet the smell has got less and less - I also make an effort whenever possible to leave it in the sun or, at least, a breeze. It's wearable again and it was REALLY rank before.

    Depends.
Commuting to work (busy road) - helmet, cos it's bright yellow and counts as my concession to Hi Viz
Popping into town: nothing. Unless it's really sunny, then maybe a baseball cap. Or a wooly hat in the winter to keep my ears warm !
