  • Follow Coggan's protocol or do an exceptionally hard race and check the 20 minute max average in WKO+.
    While that suggested method appears in the book, it isn't actually one of Dr Coggan's recommended approaches to estimating FTP.

    Nevertheless as a starting point it's OK (but recognise that it might be in a range, say 92-96% of 20-min power).

    You definitely want 1-second recording and you can now (with the 2.70 firmware) choose to display Average Power instead of NZAP (non-zero average power) on the 705.
    Thanks for the tip - I'll check my firmware version.

    Presumably NZAP will vary more (higher than true average) in a road race situation when you are likely to freewheel quite a bit (or indeed a hilly sportif with lots of coasting) than in a TT situation where you are likely to pedal most of the time?

    Yes.

    NZAP in itself is a pretty useless number.
