  • OK, so I'm tempted to buy a pair of Assos shorts...

Can anyone explain to me the difference between the Mille, the Uno and the FI13 is?

What I think I've gleaned so far is that the Mille has a larger 4 panel insert, the others have a smaller 6 panel insert (So what?) and that the Mille is better suited to long (80 mile plus) rides...

Have tried the Assos website but I'm not getting it ... :?

If you look at point 4 in the links at the top of the page, you will see the differences between them. It's basically shape and coverage. But the FI.13 is touted as the best one if you have the budget ... although the Uno S5 is very popular. C+ giving it a high score in a recent shorts test certainly helped of course.

OK so have made up my mind to get some Assos bibshorts

Was looking to get the FI Uno S5's but have noticed the older Assos FI.13 S2 for the same price.

Would I be better sticking with the newer Uno S5's or going for the FI.13's with the S2?

That depends if the size they have in stock, probably limited, is your size. Otherwise there's no point. Fine shorts with the S2 insert though that's for sure.

Yeah a tough one as both in my size (Small).

Unsure wether the S5 is such an improvement over the S2 to warrant this purchase or wether the cut and material on the 13 warrants purchase over the Uno.

The 13's are actually slightly cheaper.

    Decisions Decisions...maybe one of each

Maybe one of each, I have to say I have the S2 pad in both my older assos shorts (FI.13s) and my Airprotec tights (Mille pad), but I would say different to the S5 insert as in the Unos.

The S2 is a fine pad and very comfortable. If you can get them at a good price (I'm guessing Ribble) and they fit you, then go for it. You won't regret it.

How long should a pair of Assos shorts last?

I've seen comments that some people have them for years. I've been Etape training over the last 6 months and have probaly clocked up 6,000kms in the shorts. Starting to feel that the pad is wearing a bit thin.

    Time for a new pair?

I also have a question on sizing, I am 30" waist, 5' 8", & 68kilos - so if you go by height I should take a M, but if you go by build I should take a S - any advice from any similar shapes.
I know it is best to try them, but what feels OK in the shop may be different after a few hours riding.

    they're pretty robust.

I crashed in mine coming off the Col du Glandon. Removed plenty of skin off my hip but not even any bobbling or scuffs on the shorts!

A friend has, however, worn his a bit thin after 3 years of many long sportives.

I'm 5'8", 31" waist and weigh 78 kilos (chunky thighs  ) and wear a medium, which feel just fine, so I guess a medium would be about right for you also.

The point is under 70 kilos is suppose to be a S.
    Anyone 5'7" or 5'8" using a S.

I'm 5'7" and about 67 kilos and wear a M. They're slightly too big, a S would have been better

I'm 5' 8", 31" waist and weigh 79kilos. Chunky thighs too - extra kg must come from being hung like a horse...

I was worried about sizing, since performance cyclewear seems to be designed for the, ummm, more svelte participant. I'm 6'0, 36ish inch waist, 90kg and the Large is fine. It appears - as I think someone else pointed out - that it's more to do with length than girth :D

I returned a pair of those today because there was no way, after wearing S5 Uno's etc, that I could possibly wear them. Fashionable or not.

Going to get some Mille's after the refund.

I'm 6' tall, 34 inch inside leg ,34 waist. The large unos fit me fine.

Yes,the legs are shorter than other makes of shorts but i prefer that. Don't like 'em when they come down to your knees. Would rather have them short as if doing a Sean Yates impersonation.

Ok- not sure on the size to go for.

I'm 6.2 which would suggest XL but im only 32 inch waist and weigh in at about 75 kilos. My concern is that the XL will be far too loose but a smaller size wont be long enough. Alas not got a LBS who stocks them..

That's tough. I'd be inclined treat height as the overiding factor since most say Assos are cut short (although I didn't find this at all). I guess you're buying online? Last time I was in that predicament I ordered through Wiggle; two sizes and returned the set that didn't fit. Really wasn't a hassle and I'm sure that it's done frequently, all in all it took less than a week from ordering to the refund being back in my account - superb service I have to say.

Or even call the shop you're buying from and speak to their clothing man/woman; I'm sure he/she'll be able to help.

If it helps anyone I eventually decided to keep the large. The extra large (as assos suggested) fitted but the grippers on the leg were loose. On the otherhand the large is a really good snug fit.

In conclusion if you are a tall beanpole like me I would advocate getting a size less than they suggest on the height chart. I'm 6'3 by the way
