I shouldn't imagine if you spend that much time riding round the park it will play out well ;-)
I *might* be able to pop my RP cherry, it all depends on what day we take the kids to London Zoo..........I think my usual tactic of inviting them for a "family outting" is wearing a bit thin now as I obviously only want to go to spend time on my bike with you guys and gals ;-D

What I find really bizarre is that most of the triathletes I've met dislike the bike so much. An ex colleague I was riding with at the Fred last week pulled out at 96 miles, and her friend came in in 13 hours  I found that astonishing for two people who are supposedly Ironman triathletes, and who can both run a marathon in under 3:30. Then again I can't swim more than 100 metres at a time, and struggle to break 8 minute miles when I run, even though I see an 80 mile bike ride as middle distance and to be attacked so I guess it's all comparative.

The 2 fellas I did the Etape with last year went on to do the UK Ironman. They cam 94th and 95th out of 1148 finishers (including the pros) but said the Eatpe was harder. I found that hard to believe but they were insistent! Must be something in it, they've hardly been on the bike since![/quote]

The Surrey Hills is a harder "course" than the IMUK bike leg, so the Etape is another level altogether. IM is about keeping a consistent pace, particularly the bike leg, and that's how you train. Sportives have that change of pace you don't have in TTs, which is effectively what IM bike legs are. The former are a bit more like a race - trying to get across to gaps, stay with groups, pelting it along on the flats etc. Also, sportives will be hillier, so unless you're doing a hilly IM, your typical triathelete ain't going to go looking for hills, just the distance. Weather conditions also play their part. And some people are just better runners than cyclists, so it seems harder.

Good point. They found the whole Ironman less challenging than the Etape though - not sure if I made that clear? Mind you the Etape was conducted in foul weather. I get your point though, but I still find it hard to believe given that the Ironman required 11 hours of effort as opposed to 7 or so for the Etape. I'm a useless swimmer and hate running anyway so never going to try Tri. Do you still dabble CJ?

Yep, your point was clear, sorry. It's me who's not clear. It's the pace generally in Ironman is consistent, including the run. The knack is to keep a consistent pace, and the courses are not hilly. The sap on your energy levels caused by hills cannot be underestimated. Things start going wrong in a flat tri, you can freewheel. No such option if the wheels come off up those Alpine climbs; you're in trouble. (I say that not having cycled in the Alps, and based on my inability to freewheel up any sort of hill.)

Haven't done tri for a couple of years. No time to train between everything else. Certainly no desire to do a long distance tri at the moment. And I don't think my knees are up to running that distance anymore.

I'd prefer Sunday but Monday is doable.

As the original idea was to get me biking around RP again, which I've now already done, why don't you all just go on Sunday anyway. I'll then do my own thing on Monday?

I should be there to! Assuming I a) find my way to the park and b) find the Cafe :-)
Can't wait as it'll be my first time down there!! Won't be able to stay for an extended period tho as I'm fast running out of brownie points but it will depend on what the wife and kids decide to do for the day!

I *might* be in the Park from 1pm, going clockwise. I'll look out for you guys in case I'm/you're there. If not, have a good ride, although the BBC forecast says "heavy rain" for tomorrow. :?

Oi! Way to curse us!!! My dad did mention this to me earlier and I pointed him in the direction of Metcheck which said sun until the 16:00 section at which point the temperature still stayed high but with scattered showers. I have lost faith in the beeb's forecast as I get them each morning over breakfast and they rarely pan out.

Riding, I know roughly where I need to head as I'll be using part of one of my commute routes and have done the ride to Wimbledon Station before. I'll also have TFL map and if all else fails the GPS on my phone so I shouldn't get lost! Gonna allow myself an hour to get there so I *might* be able to get a lap in before every else arrives.....

    Heh heh. :)

BBC says it's now going to be ok. Saw the MetCheck one last night. There was a discussion on the Jeremy Vine Radio 2 show last year about the BBC forecast. Something about not stating when it would rain because it didn't break the day down and even if there was a low chance of rain, they'd say "rain". It affected levels of tourism etc.

That was roughly where I was gonna head and then over Wimbledon Common. I could meet Jen so just in case you do read this before 10am (when I'm planning on leaving my house) let me know if that would be OK and when/where to meet and I should be able to get there :-D

EDIT: Blonde moment, jus realized I'd be taking the most direct route by turing right as I enter, in which case I miss Broomfield and Dark Hill's by my map ;-)
@JG - Which climb would I miss if I don't head up the hill ?
