How does the 8.1 compare to the standard laser in real terms, is it massively noticeable difference in performance?0 -

I personally love it. I got fed up of doing pants in all racing lol (I did weigh around 17st >_< ). I might even enter this years nationals. They have a really good Handicap of 1052 also.
I could take a full laser rig out in most winds and be fine with it, but in strong winds the 8.1 is insane! I think I was even scared at one point, but I think the whole boat was out of the water after going over a huge wave, so I was a bit busy to be scared
I really love how it sails too, alot more power, and it doesnt come on in a huge surge, it comes on smoothly and spills nicely when you catch a huge gust.
When I sailed my full rig on handicap, I usually placed about 9-10th, but now I'm usually in the top three, sometimes I even win.
It rigs differently to a std sail too, you need a fair bit kicker most of the time. As the sail is very deep, you have the outhaul pretty tight, otherwise the sail just collects wind and doesnt drive you.
Its also built very, very well, and will easily outlast a geniune laser sail, plus they are a great price!
There are also a couple of guys with them at my club, and we get very very competative!
I also know a guy who has designed and made this sail: an 8.5m fully battened sail, that uses a std rig mast. No good for racing but awesome for a blast about! After some trials in some handicap races, they suggest a handicap of 1050 for this rig.

Couple of weeks back, looking ugly and miserable, which is nothing unusual.
This was much improved from a couple of days earlier than this shot though. Shame I don't have that shot. Loads more scrapes, swollen eye, and tube down my throat apparently. Nice.
