    Fairly astonishing.

Pretty much it's the only story in the cycling section of newsnow

    Quote from Lance:
“The collarbone is broken and I have a little bit of road-rash abrasions,” Armstrong said as he left Valladolid University Hospital. “I’ve never had this happen before, it’s pretty painful. I feel really miserable."

So it's confirmed. That's really too bad. I was looking forward to seeing him contest the Giro. I think it would have helped raise not only the level of competition in the Giro, but more importantly would have raised its profile throughout the world (in particular the U.K. and U.S.), which could only help increase our ability to watch it on tv.

Lance Armstrong, the seven-time winner of the Tour de France, withdrew from the Tour of Spain today after crashing out of the first stage and fracturing his collarbone.

I think people who would make cynical comments about someone's injury show a real lack of class

the guy is already hurt; all you want to do is hurt him some more

    seems pretty cowardly to me

i hope he recovers well and is able to get back on track with his goals for the season

this is a tough challenge for him already and now he has to really show the determination to succeed

he has my support for that

I was amazed at how long the helicopter stayed at the scene and the SOB knew that and "Milked" the situation.
Somewhere in the thread a comment about a lot of similar injuries this year and those riders just got up and into the ambulance, (there you go for a New name for him) end of story.
What Goals did he have then.???? I don't think I've seen any statement from him about winning anything, but if by some chance he is in a position to take a win. Then he will take it.
He is not being paid by the Team but is earning his pay in other ways and that may be the answer why no one waited for him.

Now a measure of the Cycling "GOD"

In the 1996 Tour de France (a time before most of you people knew about the TDF) a former world champion pulled up in the pouring rain and ripped his number off and threw it at the broom wagon. Then got on his bike and rode off in the other direction to stop the press from following and duly disappeared to Texas.
The Press (those few that stopped) had a real story to follow and left that crazy USA man and went after the "Tour" and the Big Names.
So worth a couple of by-lines only.

Then he returns as the "Cancer Freak" (I don't mind going to court with that one, if he or you, dare) and oh what treatment he had to turn him into a Really Top Class rider for the Summer Months Only.

Hate him, why he's too pathetic too hate, We have seen his Antics since he arrived in 1992 and we found then that it was all about ME-ME-ME and aren't I good.

Do not tell me I'm a Coward for my views and my Full Respect is for Jade Goody who was very courageous and unselfish in making

Lance only fell off and broke his collar bone as he was involved in a crash. No other reason. He has been extremely unfortunate. How uncharitable can you be? It could happen on any weekend event when wheels touch and some one goes down. Maybe you need surgery as does Lance but not to mend your collar bone but to remove that massive chip on yours. What did you achieve in cycling? Did you ever win one race, championship even a TdF? If so pipe up now or stop being so critical. It was only an accident.

BTW Jane Goody was a foul mouthed racist not really in the same league as LA who has raised millions for others fighting cancer. Jane Goody was only interested in money for herself and kids. She had NO talent. Thousands of others die from cancer but don't propel themselves into the limelight.

  • I see the BBC have this story as one of their main headlines on their site. Poor Cavendish. Won one of the monuments of cycling and his story's overshadowed by that. Yes, it's unfortunate for him and nobody wishes anyone gets injured in anything. But is that more important than a huge victory for a British rider?

It was fun while it lasted. The personality cult however, remains strong.

I like many I guess were hoping that he would be at the Giro and the Tour to see if he still can cut it seeing if Contador can pull away or has Lance still got he stamina. Hopefully he will have recovered for the tour but will his collar bone be as strong, maybe not. If not then fine. He doesn’t have to prove anything. He is still a legend of the sport. LA’s comeback makes me think of Ali in 1980 against Larry Holmes when he secured the world heavy weight title for the 4th time. Was he any less of a fighter because he came back for one more fight? No of course not. In 1984 he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease. Wouldn’t it be great if LA could make a similarly astonishing comeback?

As has already been said this will unfortunately take the media spotlight away from Mark Cavendish’s superb win. He is still young and will no doubt have many more wins.

It's a shame really. However much you don't like him, the Contador/Armstrong saga was just getting to become interesting! Now no-one will have to show their cards, since this accident has forced the move to support Contador. Shame.
Note: the above post is an opinion and not fact. It might be a lie.

Speaking as someone who's hand is still in a sling from a collarbone break 2 weeks ago, that was not milking it.

You cannot do anything except hold your arm up and wonder how long it will take to heal.

Mine so far has shown no sign of healing and will be 6 weeks altogether at least. It's less with surgery though.

Ive seen loads of riders stay on the deck for ages befoe getting into the ambulance so nothing to report here move on. As for Jade Goody compare her to Jane Tomlinson and her brave fight against cancer and you will see what dingity and courage and unselfishness really is all about ........no comparison one was a inspiration to many and the other a loud mouthed ignorant racist who has taken the public for a ride. That said i feel sorry for her and her kids but lets not turn here into something she wasnt.

Apparently, LA's "twit" says he's due surgery in a couple of days.......................

So, few days to recover from the op, then back on the trainer.

10 days or so for the wound to heal and he'll get the go-ahead to get out on the roads.

Fracture united in 6-8 weeks......................then back to the racing.

I wouldn't be so quick to discount his Giro or Tour plans just yet - time is on his side!

+1 for Jane Tomlinson. The programme she made about her cycling across the US for her cancer charity was truly humbling while she fought cancer herself. She was pretty weak and succumbing to the cancer. The pain she was in was clearly excruciating. She was truly selfless and what a role model! She had also cycled London to Rome did a few marathons as well to raise money for cancer research. She was a human dynamo. She was honured by the Queen as well OBE I think. What did Jade Goody do?

I hope it doesn't affect too much his performances in the coming months.Like it or not he is back in the peleton and his presence would / will make any race he enters more 'interesting'.Whether you think thats a good thing or not doesn't alter that fact.I guess most people accept he had 'assistance' during his career but who in his era didn't ?.Very few I suspect.I'm afraid it's a bit like Politicians, you suspect they all have their 'nose in the trough / milking the perks' until proven otherwise,a much more unsavoury and dispicable practice than anything Pro cyclists get up to.
  • his presence would / will make any race he enters more 'interesting'
It certainly didn't before his comeback. Dull, dull, dull. It's given cycling more press coverage, but that's about it

    Interesting

On the front page of Sky.com/news - Cavendish didn't get a mention.

Also, having a look at the Sun, biggish article and picture of Lance, yesterday about 4 lines on Cavendishes win.

I agree jade goody did nothing, she didnt deserve to die but she didnt deserve all the money she got.

Maybe lance did take drugs, but if he did then i imagine they all did, but the one thing you cant dispute is all the lives he will save through his foundation.

And i've been watching the tour since 89

BBC news give it a minute+ slot. Show the crash, it's implications and interviews with both LA and Bertie.
The same BBC news that were mute over Cav's monument victory....

6-8 weeks, don't discount the Giro, time on his side?
I would. It starts 6 weeks this Saturday.

8 weeks means he'll just make the Dauphine.
