Luverley bike, I do like BIG hardtails! 8)
Out of curiosity what does it weigh with the gears on it? (I do realise lightness isn't the point on this sort of bike, just curious  )*Rock Lobster Team Tig SL (22lb 14oz)

Cheers man
Umm i'm really not sure. Might take it down the LBS and see if Mike the Mechanic will weight it for me
Although, i'm pretty surprised at how "light" its come out. Its def a bit heavier that what my GT was, but I only ever feel that on a climb. its a million times more nimble, planted and chuckable than other bikes i've ridden (or maybe i'm biased ) but I love it0 -
Ah nice, yeah I used to have a stinky but I got fed up with having to ride 3-4 miles just to get to the woods taking an hour or so because its just not designed for anything other than downhill - but downhill and freeride stuff its a dream to use although I do prefer my Surge simply because the Stinky takes the fun out of riding because everything becomes a little bit easier and you don't get such a good feel of the trail your riding as every little bump is soaked up by the ridiculous front and rear travel!
...I haven't been to swindle yet so don't know what the climbs are like, but I'm unfit aswell which doesn't help! - But in comparison, my Dawg supreme which has 5" travel weighs well under half of what my Surge does.
How heavy are the domains? They must be lighter than my Z150s which weigh an absolute ton - but yeah, I'll try and get it weighed would be good to compare!0 -
It certainly looks like you could point and pedal it ANYWHERE
Maybe its better not knowing and just keep enjoying it!*Rock Lobster Team Tig SL (22lb 14oz)

Not sure how heavy the domans are TBH. not light though
Just had the new XT cable outer turn up and the 24mm socket + ratchet from grimy (cheers fella) so when I get back from uni this afternoon i'll swap out the cable and change the spring to a stiffer one and i'm done
Also planning on going swinley this weekend (if I get my dissertation done by friday that is), well looking forward to it0 -
Sounds good... I'm gonna head off to chicksands (bout 30mins drive) some time early next month on a weekday (nice and quiet) to take the surge out for a propper ride... finally I'll get to ride it in a place where it'll be at home!!0

Nice bashring/chain tensioner.
And I quite like the small Saint.0 -
cheers
New spring is now fitted.... OMG what a difference! Its now isperfect. Went for a blast round the house again (this time with a helmet) but with a mate and found some old abandoned single trackthats been there for ages - few jumps and drops but its all terribly weathered with roots out every where so its pretty unridable.... might get my shovel out and see what i can do
Saying that, I was shown some nice singletrack thats pretty fast... flat, but fast. With a bit of work ie a few berms and possibly some jumps it'd be awesome! Mate couldn't keep up which was pretty sweet too
Oh, and the brakes came into their own on the tight stuff, never experienced such corner control in my life!0 -
seriously nice, i love the spank lounge bars, soooooooo wide.0

Never been able to manual!
plus I really need to get some balance back. I'm again thinking about a balance board0 -
junglist_matty wrote:Oh yeah, whilst over at Afan, I saw two other guys riding the Surge 08' model, one was running 55s but said he's had nothing but trouble from them!
Ah ha that was you eh, my mate was the one with the dodgy 55's, that weekend in Wales was one of the best ever. We'd only just been talking about how you don't see many folk riding surge frames, despite the fact they seem so popular and then we see you. Think I saw the bike hiding in the campsite on previous day too.0 -

LOL... Ye, I was camping in the tent that looked like it had been put up by a drunk - reason was cause the website I bought it from gave me the poles and inner tent from the 2 man version, and the outside tent from the 3 man version, so everything was different sizes!
...But yeah, wasn't too surprised I didn't see any over at Afan though, did you have much troubles getting up the hills? (although you guys looked a hell of a lot fitter than me!) - That was my first propper ride in about 3 years so I was shattered, but uphill on the bike felt like dragging a dead body behind me - just didn't perform at all well on the climbs, although its not really built for that considering the forks are about 3kg's!!!
However, on the sections after you guys caught us up (Graveyard and ZigZags) was pretty good fun, some really decent downhill trails and was able to give the Surge a propper blast - Although after that trip, I decided to buy a Dawg Supreme 2008 model simply so I can ride further as it climbs singletrack stuff better than a flat road!0 -
Think we tried and succeeded with most of the hills, we'd ridden the Whites Level trail the day before and the climb was harder on that but do-able. They're not the best bikes for long climbs or XC, but I did manage to get up the innerleithen climb in one piece last weekend, and that really is hard work. That Wales trip really helped with my overall fitness.0

Afan is down south, if you're going to ride anywhere down south Wales ride Cwncarn, awesome red route plus they have a great wee play park right at the top of the climb.0

Hey Benj, how does the handling feel when the fork is set at 140mm thanks. Now that we are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak and not to please ourselves. ROMANS 15:10
-
no idea
I can check tomorrow for you though. Twas HORRIBLE at 115mm thats for sure!!
Doubt i'll ever use anything other than 160mm tbh.
Edit: there's no travel markings on the stanchions though, so it'd be a bit of a guess!!0 -
FLICK THE DOWNTUBE ITS SO GOOD
God I came so close to buying the surge just because of that downtube.
FLICK IT

Hey Ben, does your 2009 frame use a 27.2mm seatpost? If so, what diameter seat clamp did you buy, I got an Identi 28.6mm seatclamp (QR) but its too big, I can't remember what diameter the clamp I got in Wales is.. I'm guessing it must be 28mm or something?0
-
hay matty... sorry I missed this!
its def a 27.2 seatpost but I have no idea what clamp its got!
Would have htought that a 28.6 would fit though... can't see a 27.8 or similar anywhere :S0 -
Something is strange to me.
I have a 27.2mm seatpost and 31.8mm seat clamp.
So bigbenj_08, if you have for example 28.6mm seatclamp then:
1.4mm/2 = 0.7mm of thick walls on the seattube.
I'm not an expert but 0.7mm looks to me very very thin.
Btw, junglist_matty are you sure it's a 28.6mm seat clamp?0 -
The beast lives on
Just over a year old and everything is still running smooth as it was on the 1st day I rode it!
Only thing I replaced was a brake lever when I binned it
Looks well used though
