  • Might be putting this off for a while now. Decided that Swinley forest is a piece of crap and I can't be arsed spending any more time up there... gonna hit Esher shore instead so I won't need the gears just yet. I'll get everything when I get my house rent deposit back in July... Just in time for my holiday to some real trails in Scotland :)

On another note.... I think I may be moving to the dark side  :D

I've got the Saint SS mech and shifter on my bike, you are going to love them. Such a quality piece of kit and by far the best shifter I've ever used. Rear mech is a work of art.

Hope this isn't your Esher fund you're blowing. ;-)
  • Sweet. I was going to get SLX but i thought feck it...i've got saint everything else so I want the full hog

It's half term anyway, the place will be packed.
  • Going back to the ISCG mounts, i have the 08 surge and i didn't think it had them. i thought you needed a bottombracket mounted one.
    Pain is Temporary,
    Failure lasts for ever!
  • the 09 has ISCG 05 mounts :)

The new NS website is up and running finally.... says on there!
  • That looks nice... I'm thinking about a very similar, perhaps slightly lighter build myself. My armadillo's fantastic, but there's a few things I'm really not so keen on.

    Can you tell me..

How does it look close up? Is the headtube substantial enough, is there much flex? I'm suspicious of steel bikes just being a random selection of drainpipes!!!

With those forks it must be very slack when they're all the way out (66 / 70 or less) Hows the ride, and can you get it low enough to climb decently.

I've got long arms so would be looking at the same size (perhaps with pikes or some Maguras - haven't decided yet)

    Ta, Joe.
  • Headtube is plenty big/strong enough. don't really notice any flex.

The ride is awesome, I love the aggressive DH stance. I don't wind it in to climb... its easy enough... its not really made to enjoy uphills
  • new pics on p1 :)

    Neaaarrly finished...

the saint shifting is mental. LOVE it.

GF has agreed to get some "action shots" of me on it later... won't be great ad there is feck all to ride round here, but its worth a try :)

Ben, that white E Thirteen looks the nuts mate, much improvement!!!

Took mine to Afan over the easter weekend, but I have to admit, going uphill was not fun, in fact it was more of a half hike half ride trip in the end, ended up skipping the uphill singletrack sections and walking up fireroads meeting friends at the top to blast it down the downhill sections...

BUT... I have to say, on the downhill sections this thing was a beast of a bike, it oozes confidence, handles perfectly and the only gripe was catching up people in front and getting stuck behind them! - on the uphills though, this is really really really really rubbish! I don't know about yours, but with mine it weighs an absolute ton (partly because the forks weigh in around 3kg and not helped with the frame being steel!). But you've used higher spec'd parts so I guess yours is probably a bit lighter than mine - think my chainset is about 1.5kgs (raceface ride dh).

After having so much fun I opted to look for a singletrack mean machine so went out and spent a lot of money on a Dawg Supreme which is light as you like so hopefully the next singletrack trip will be a lot more fun and I'll be able to join in the uphill climbs - not that they're much fun!

...But for freeride and DH, Jumps etc... this bike is amazing, I'm well chuffed with it, can't wait to take it over to chicksands one afternoon (weekends are just too busy there) next month!

Oh yeah, whilst over at Afan, I saw two other guys riding the Surge 08' model, one was running 55s but said he's had nothing but trouble from them! But they are amazing bikes, I really love yours, looks so neat and tidy compared with mine which was built from whatever was available and best value for money lol!

    Cheers mate :)

The colour scheme on your Surge is pretty sweet too, fairy similar specs apart from the drive!

Yea luckily for me, ill be riding mainly with my bro when I get home. He's got a Kona Stinky, so climbs are usually very slow anyways :D

That said, when I was up in Swinley Forest, I didn't really struggle that much with the weight of the bike (and it was SS then!) so i'm pretty pleased with how its turned out.

From when I did go Swinley, the bike feels well and truly planted. Gonna have to get used to the superb modulation of the Saint brakes tho - tap them suddenly by accident and your off
The only thing that let it down was the tyres, so i've got some big chunky things that i'm saving for the 7stanes tour in August :D

Think I want a white QR seat clamp now, pain in the arse using allen keys :(
