I biked in this morning on my roadie, but now I am thinking I should have brought my moutnain bike. The snow here isn't that bad, but I am wondering whether it will get worse by the time I leave.0

This was my sister's scooter on our st. at 11:00 last night. Apologoes for the poor quality - I've pulled it off my Facebook as the .tif version is on the macbook at home. Suffice to say my sis is not riding it today!

It is snowing in Twickenham. Loads of people walking around the streets...weird.0

Oooooh I want to play!
My footprints
Part of the garden - snow's about 10" deep

I had tremendous fun commuting in to work this morning. Not too much snow in Southampton (probably 5 - 6 cms where I am on the outskirts) but I only had the choice of bike or bike as my young lady friend took my car as she couldn't get her car out the drive (rear wheel drive).
Its nice to finally be able to have the correct bike for the conditions (cross bike with knobbly tyres). Even nicer to be passing cars going up the hills on the ungritted roads. I didn't realise how slippy it was until I got to a junction and put my foot down. Kudos to nokon
Don't know about anyone else but I'm really pleased with how polite car drivers have been this morning.
Big grins all round when I got into work!0 -
I just tried it out on the MTB. I feel a lot safer on that than in the car!
Currently 'working at home'. Achievements so far: a few emails, one ppt slide, three snowmen, playing on the sledge, one massive community snowball fight, trying out the MTB on the snow, drinking hot drinks with friends. Great morning!0 -
Bristol was fine this morning, although they very liberally coated the suspension bridge in salt. I shouldn't complain but I can't help thinking this is going to mean a night spent greasing every bearing on my poor old roadie.FCN- 4 with Laser designator sights0

I did my usual 14 miles but it was hairy as a hairy thing. Had one row with a motorist who overtook at a pinch point on a sheet of ice. he called me a w*nk** when i asked him for a bit more room. I just smiled and told him that he must be very proud of his lovely car (rusty fiesta or some such). he went purple, but as he was abou 5 feet tall and in need of nourishment (all his dole spent on fags by the look) I just left him.
The driving is remarkable in some places. I hope a few of them end up in the hedge.
Very busy roads ok as slush. Very quiet roads ok as snow isn't too slippy. Middle mummy bear roads a sheet of compressed ice and lethal. I think it will be really bad going home.
Had to walk up one hill as couldn't get traction much to the amusement of watchers.
Take care out there everyone.
Still better than driving.Dan0 -
Underscore wrote:MrChuck wrote:Walked in instead- I'm close enough to my office that it's not worth the messing about with the bike/risking someone sliding into me. Coming in would probably have been mostly OK but if it all freezes tonight it could be different.
I am also close enough to walk but I also have a route that is completely off-road, so I got the MTB out - it was gorgeous, riding across fields of pristine snow. Fell of once when I lost traction on a steep-ish up-hill section (so pushed the bike until it started to flatten out). Took the downhill bits very carefully as they were on frozen, rutted tracks with a smooth and even covering of snow - wonderful practice for you bike control though.
What a fantastic change to most commutes this time of year.

I'm jealous, there's no variation on my route that wouldn't suck0 -
No snow here in NI We're due a bit tomorrow morning, but I'll be in the car. I would probably have put the knobblies back on the MTB and given it a go.
Ah well, hope you all have fun anyway.Today is a good day to ride0 -
I'm gutted, it's just a bit cold here on the Fylde coast so a normal commute on my mtb. There was a few flakes but nothings sticking I want to make a snowman too0

I made a snow dog, she is very realistic isn't she?

I bet jash made that snow "man" himself.Today is a good day to ride0

I am, but we've only got about an inch here (harr harr) a beemer nearly slid into me as it came out of a car park, it was crawling but the exit is steep and it had locked all 4 wheels and was just sliding down... Very funny.0

I biked in this morning, was pretty cold and a bit harder with snow permanently blowing in my face but glad i committed myself.
Been snowing pretty heavily all day here though [Manchester]Commuter Surosa Toledo S34 Audax

Well worth going through Richmond Park this morning (only got snowballed once!). It was slow going - I think I need to let a lot of air out of my 2.1s for the ride home. Some roads were clear of snow, others a sheet of ice.
I try to avoid cycling anywhere near the edges of the roads - too unpredictable.
I'd have said that cycling was no more dangerous than walking or driving. Saw many cars slidng down the roads this morning...0 -
Well as i appear to live in the only part of the country not getting any snow (Devon) I will be biking to work tonight. Am very jealous of all the peeps enjoying their snowball fights though!0
-
No 'kin chance i'll be biking it til the snow and ice clear off and the temps go above zero. My commute is too long and there are a few steep hills and lots of traffic to contend with (and thats the quiet route). I'll be sticking to the car til its over. Fortunately i start early and finish late so will miss the god awful traffic.0

Amazingly, my childrens' school opened today - about the only one in the area. Obviously a sufficiently large number of local teachers. I was gutted! So, WAH for the day - until 3, when I shall pop up to pick them up with a couple of boogie boards, then head for the hills! It last snowed like this in Southampton 18 years ago, so have to make the most of it (I was almost tempted to skive them, but didn't want to give tham any ideas )0

changed bike from road bike to clunky old mountain bike with real low pressure rear tyre..
made it up hampstead hill which was pretty dam slippy this morning...
overall round trip 12 miles or so"If I was a 38 year old man, I definitely wouldn't be riding a bright yellow bike with Hello Kitty disc wheels, put it that way. What we're witnessing here is the world's most high profile mid-life crisis" Afx237vi Mon Jul 20, 2009 2:43 pm0 -
came in on the Brompton, as usual. No problem 8)0
-
Best commute of the year - capped off by passing car after car of quing traffic - chucked the knobblys on the hard tail and it was great in the snow - might be a different story tommorrow after a freeze !!!!0
-
snow-people...
Obviously diversity is important in the Grace household... and we have time on our hands!
Note how it's still snowing rather a lot... :shock:0 -
LiT, that is perhaps the most impressive thing that I have ever seen that is made of snow.0

Boris cycled in: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7865169.stm (about 2.40 in).
Good for him.
And he's let me (and miscellaneous others) off the congestion charge today. Hurrah!0 -

I listened to the complete twat on the radio this morning, as they mentioned even during the blitz the London buses ran. WHY oh WHY do all our mayor's have to be such complete MORONS.

My commute this morning rocked.
I was supposed to be up at Portman Square for a job at 0800. Got most of the way there (Hyde Park) when i got the call saying it had been cancelled, so went back to the office in Wandsworth via the river path.
Singlespeed MTB, tyres pumped up hard (grip on snow, OK on tarmac sh!t on ice, just like everything else). Snow riding is magic fun. One off soming across Clapham Common - hit a kerb i hadn't seen.
Saw one guy on a fixie who was absolutely hauling ass. Very impressive, even in the corners - totally poised.
Looking forward to the ride home. :-)0 -
I'm wimping out this evening. The snow picked up a bit in Bristol around lunchtime so I had a mate from work run me home so I could pick up my jeep. I'll put the bike in the back of that and drive home tonight. I should have ridden my mountain bike this morning in reality, but I'd rather be safe than sorry tonight.
The funny thing is that I am trully gutted not to be riding home in the snow, but I don't think a roadie and a snow covered cycle path would be sensible0
