    10) Stay illness and injury free (a repeat of 2008 would be nice)
Completely failed on this already. Got sick in the second week of January, then had what I thought was a very minor crash a week and a half ago and tore my lower calf. At least the physio said I can still ride with it - just no sprints and keep walking to a minimum.

    Train Smarter
I read an article that made me laugh, somebody stated their race pace is an average 20 mph, but they train at an average 15mph. How can they get better? A person posted back asking why they practiced going slow? (made me laugh :-))

I need to make smarter use of my limited time for riding. I use a heart rate monitor during the ride, but I am going to keep a detailed record of my rides which will include:
    • Course
    • Distance
    • Duration
    • Average speed
    • Maximum speed
    • Weather conditions
    • Comments – how I felt during the ride, hilly or flat ride etc etc

    Ride to work
My place of work is about 8 miles away, my plan is to try and ride to work at least twice / week. This will require additional planning on my part as I will need to leave office clothes at work the night before and make sure I can leave my laptop at work as well.

10 Mile TT series with local club
There are about 15 races over 4 different courses, I want the following from the series of races:
    • Improve my time by around 5% to 10% on all 4 courses from the start of the series to the end of series.
    • At work there is healthy competition between 5 riders in my department and we all want to be the quickest among our small group. I want to have at latest the quickest time on 1 of the courses, if not more.
    • Ride using my aero-bars for longer in the TT, just find it too easy to stay on the handles bars for too long.
    • Give it everything - 100% for the whole event. Leave my legs on the course.

100 mile charity ride with Action Medical Research
I am keen to take part and raise money for Action Medical Research in the Forest of Arden on August 9th 2009. Check out http://www.action.org.uk/get_involved/cycling worthwhile cause.

    Watching Cycling
Last year I went to the Manchester velodrome for the 1st time for it was great, I am going to organize another trip and go again. Victoria Pendleton was just amazing to watch, the turn of speed and ability to win. VP’s number 1 fan!!!!!

Hoping to watch Mark Cavendish win some exciting sprint finishes during of the Tour de France, he has already made a winning start with the Tour of California, which Eurosports had very good coverage on.

See the return of Lance and how he gets on.

My first season of this sort of riding so it's gonna hurt i guess.

Are you thinking of doing that alone? I only ask in case you're not aware that there is a 24hr time trial run each year run by the Mersey Roads Club. It's on the 25th July this year. If you rode that you would have the safety of time checks, advice on lighting and food stations, plus you would be amongst a whole load of other people doing the same thing with the extra incentive that brings to keep going. I think there is an all-night cafe open on the course too, where people pop in for a feed if they haven't got a full back-up crew. Maybe one to think about?

    You'll do that Ant.

You could probably shave another 30 - 40 seconds just by getting off the club 10 course and doing a Ten on a quicker out and back Monks Heath, Chelford, Toft roundabout and back course. Westmead do 10's there on a Wednesday night - EOL as well I understand.

But then a sub-25 on the club 10 course is all the more rewarding because its a bit tougher. You'll also get quicker as you get to know the course better

In the dry, you'll be lucky, british summer evenings in Cheshire = wet :)

I kinda like the course, its harder than a straight forward flat out and back, makes it more difficult to get a good time but makes it pretty satisfying when you do. Because its a tricky course its useful to measure yourself against how other riders do on a night rather than simply against your PB, particularly good if you have a slower night but beat people who had beaten you on previous weeks ;)

imho that course is slowest with the wind in your face down to the Yellow Broom as the other sections are more sheltered so you never make up the lost time. Its also quick when there's a slight wind behind you down to Yellow Broom.

Think the biggest thing is not to overcook it from the start and/or coming out of the dip, you can lose loads of time on what should be a fast section down to Yellow Broom if you do

Anyway you're makign good progress with a 26 on your second ride in the wet, if we get some decent conditions you'll be laughing

and if i ever leave work on time on a Thursday I actually may get down to ride one myself...!

    Just a club 10 course

Go on the CTT website if you want some 10 mile TT course maps for Cheshire. Should be some on there now. Monks Heath - Knutsford and back is popular but you need to be careful doing it at full tilt on your own because the roundabouts are bad enough with marshalls, you need to slow to a speed to negotiate them safely on your own.

    1. To learn to love hills & treat them as training aids which will make me a better, fitter & stronger cyclist....not murder me every time I go out, the same with howling gales & the sh1t road surfaces we have to put up with
    2. To complete the Highclere 77 mile route!
    3. As above in a reasonable time for an overweight 57 year old who smoked most of his life & only started cycling last year when I gave up
    4. To do a 10 mile TT in under 30 mins.

That's the "Jenkin Chapel" / "Pym's Chair" / "Goyt Peak" climb.

One of my targets (which I forgot to write on here) was to get up that totally seated and I finally managed it today! :D 8) I was properly buzzed up when I got to the top without having to grind my way up out of the saddle! :D

Next up, Winnats pass, without getting out of the saddle! ........ :? :? :? :?

Winnats pass is boring I've heard, it's apparently pretty easy too. Mam nick is more fun I've never done winnats but from what I've heard it's easy and boring.

Why try get up a climb in the saddle, if you want to do it out of the saddle do it, sitting in just slows you down sometimes, well it does me.

I don't know what my targets are, probably to do a race and to get an under 26min 10 mile TT.

    And to fix my knee.

Different muscle groups used. Doing it out of the saddle is a different technique innit.

I've done Winnats - it's ok, generally, but I found that there was one bit which you really need to attack, or it'll grind you to a halt.

Try Mow Cop then, you have to attack near the pub, but you wont grind to a halt and that's 25%, winnats don't go that steep

Is Mam Nick the one which climbs out of Edale up to the Mam Tor carpark ? Tht's nasty ! I've been up it on my MTB a few times following the pinball descent down Jacobs Ladder. As for Winnat's Pass....... it's ACE on the way down

    Anyway, my goals......

    The Exmoor Beast 2010.
I've only had the road bike since July, and whilst i love going out on it, I find it difficult to stick to a training plan, I thought having a target such as this would help !!

    A BIG climb !
A couple of mates have talked about doing Ventoux or the like sometime next year. Whilst I fully expect it to break me, I'm not passing up a chance like that, so my goal is to get up it with out having to collect my lungs from under the front wheel.

    Cheers........ Matt

When I did Alpe D'Huez I certainly did sections out of the saddle just to relieve the muscles....so in answer to the above question yes I would.
