Dragon Ride Wales 2009

Entries for the 2009 Dragon Ride Wales will be available online at www.dragonride.co.uk from midnight on the 27th December 2008.

New for 2009:
We are pleased to announce that mechanical support for 2009 Dragon Ride Wales will be provided by Mavic, which will have their distinctive yellow service vehicles at the start and out on the course.

Also for next year:
• Improved car parking procedure helping to eliminate start line delays.
• Additional start/finish activities, entertainments and facilities for those not riding. Larger event expo area with more trade stands.
• Increased choice of food at the feed stations including a savoury option.
• Revised route.
• Improved online event entry service provided by Active Network.

The route will essentially be the same as the 2008 event however we are looking at revising the first few miles of the Gran Fondo course which will include three additional short sharp climbs prior to the ascent of the Bwlch. it will also add approximately 12 extra kilometres and 260 metres of climbing. Details will be released soon.

  • All welcome improvements, as discussed in a previous thread...

Obviously come at a 10% increase in entry fee, which is in line with the rate of inflation(???) and reflects the economic state of the nation

  • If you look on the website the entry fee includes VAT which smaller sportives don't have to charge, take that away and it's cheaper that some of the other clasic rides.

If I take away VAT the fee is in line with other sportives, still 10% higher than last year, when VAT was higher than it is now...
If he really sorts out the start and the food stations, well, then it's a good sportive, not the best, but a good one.
I won't do it, as I've decided I can't be bothered to travel around for sportives, but that's me...

    Oh goody....

Personally, I'm happy to pay the entry fee, frankly its worth more than that just for the fun of hammering around with 2000+ other loonies! Don't think I've ever stopped at a food station on any sportive so far.

I like to make sure I eat my entry fee in food at the stops...that means 10% extra food next summer..great.
  • The provisional route details and clothing images are now available to view on the Dragon Ride website www.dragonride.co.uk

Revised route heads east from the start and takes in climbs through Llantrisant Forest (The Smilog), Gilfach and Glynogwr before hitting the Bwlch.

    Lou.

Gosh! You must be big and strong with lots of stamina.

I wish I was like you.

No, I carry it all with me, as I am big (slightly overweight) and have a crap power to weight ratio; and therefore don't want to stop and waste valuable time!

I only stop for bottle refils, any food I'll need is in the jersey pockets.

I have used a camelbak a couple of times to avoid this. Didnt last year, but a broken crank meant I used the broomwagon all day...

I remember you posting about the broken crank. I've been using a Camelbak over the winter and could be tempted to use it for longer rides in the summer.

Could have done with in France this year. I rode an Alpine sportive with the temperature around 40 degrees, and was watching the amount of fluid I drank as I had no idea how far it was between feed stops.

As an aternative, the Irish Mail 400 Km audax runs on the 13th, and offers an equally scenic yet longer route, for the princely sum of £8. That's half a penny per kilometre in comparison with the Dragon's 6.2 p per kilometre. Marvellous value!
  • For some perspective.

You know that place where you were told that you couldn't jump the red light? On the down the dip up the dip bit? i.e about 10 minutes out of the start?

Well, they're routing us so that getting to that point will take us about another 30 or so minutes. And there are a couple of real bastard inclines along the way.

You WILL be warm by the first major ascent, trust me.

I have ridden that route a couple of times and I agree completely with your prognosis!

Do they go through Brynna or Llanharan at the start ?

Llanharan has a terrible road surface and if i had a choice it would be Brynna . just a thought :)

As said when you hit Gilfach you will soon forget about the start

What wasn't mentioned is that registration can no longer be done by post. That was one of the things the Dragon really had going for it. Bridgend is a long way from everywhere (!) so it was a great feature that registration kit (transponder, number, etc) was sent out in advance. Alas, no more. We now are expected to be there the day before to register.

Given the experience the organisers have amassed, and the feedback from other sportives using the post, I'm surprised they've missed this one

Having just looked at the website, you are able to register on the morning of the event. They do warn of the potential for delay though!
  • Registration is now open, as I have just done so at 11:30 pm.

You can either collect your pack at the expo on the 13th June or on the day of the race - that's going to be interesting....
  • Oh well I am signed up - what have I done?? Now to go and work on the hills!
  • It's a real shame the packs won't be posted out this year. It's one of the few things that was really well organised in this event. Looks like there will be a big queue on the Sunday.

I'm rather looking forward to the Brevet Cymru 400, not to mention the Bryan Chapman 600 this year. I'm even contemplating the London-Edinburgh-London 1400 too.

May I suggest for maximum pain, sorry pleasure, you do the BC Scenic.......visits every beauty spot in every village in Wales, most of them up at the local hill, most of which are nasty-go on, you'll have a ball

I believe LEL is now closed to new entries, BTW

    No!

I like to get to Dolgellau about 1am heading south so that I can get 4 hours sleep in. For me that means the 2004 route!

While I like audaxes very much, I also like sportives

Sometimes the two are quite close to each other-hammering round the Elenith in 11hours gives same satfisfaction as the Dragon in under 6

Any longer than 300, and it becomes more arduous-I reckon proper Audax starts at 400k?

I did the Brevet Cymru last year, can't say I enjoyed it much-too much scenery/distance to enjoy-it's all a blur now

I've bitten the bullet and signed-up, see you there. I just need to persuade some of my buddies now. I take it that you have signed-up Ken? Perhaps we can enlist William etc?
