Respect to the Haka

  • Show any disrepect to the haka and you might end up like O'Driscoll did at the 2005 lions...

    ?

    They speared him.

Never understood why one team is allowed to whip themselves up into a frenzy with a war dance while the other side are expected to respectfully stand still. What I would love to see a team do would be to stand still in a lovely line, then as soon as they start poncing about just jog toward the other end of the pitch and continue warming up. Or, just walk around behind them. David Campese practised his goalkicking years ago when they started sounding like Chef from the Muppets. "diba de diba de bordey boredy". Whatever, get over yourselves. Did the redcoats wait for them to perform a silly dance on the beach before colonising them?

They DID NOT spear him. Bloody hell, some spin doctor who doesn't know the difference between a ruck and a maul writes those words and an entire hemisphere kicks and screams.

It's plain to see they were cleaning out a ruck, one on one side, one on another.

And if you're anti the haka, then why don't you find something in your culture to do? Stand around talking about the weather? Queue? Morris Dance? Take your pick!

    Vive les All Blacks!!! [:D]
  • TV could go for an ad break while they do their little dance.

Wait a sec, it's on BBC isn't it? Weekend weather forecast maybe?...
  • just treat it like the beeb used to treat streakers at the cricket. Deliberately focus on something else and not televise their little moment of attention-seeking.
  • League fan here and I LOVE the Haka. Not sure how accurate this assessment is, but the NZ League team seems to have more Islanders/Maoris than the Union lot and they put everything into it. I remember seeing them do it on request for fans at the train station in Leeds once too (think it's on you tube) and for the Queen at a reception, Reuben Wiki (one of my favourite players ever) ranked that as one of the greatest moments of his career.

As for respecting it... Australia's Willie Mason (an absolute brute of a forward, with a bit of Maori in him) once stood in front of the Kiwis giving lip about their Oz-born half back performing the Haka... and got absolutely pummelled the first time he held the ball. The NZ commentators were screaming "What're those lips saying now Willie?"

Ahhh yes, that hit on Mason is a fond memory indeed! it was massive!

And you're right, the league team does contain more islanders/maori as well.

It's not a 'maori' thing though really. it's a NZ thing. It's part of our culture and our history. And for people who say "but you're white, it's not part of YOUR history" I beg to differ. My ancestors may have been English and Irish, but I identify myself as a New Zealander through and through. Just because my skin colour means I can't trace my blood lines back to the Maori tribes in the 1800's doesn't make me any less proud of our history and heritage. We see ourselves as all one people. We don't diversify on race or colour, we're all one. And that makes it OUR culture and history. There is no theirs and ours.

Looking forward to an All Blacks and Kiwis double tomorrow! :D

Goat, I'm actually the black sheep of my family as I played rugby all my life whereas Dad and his family were league. My grandfather was a test referee actually. Dad refused to play for his school 1st XV as he was staying loyal to league. When they had big sports days, he had to sit in the classroom and write lines instead! haha. He got sick of that evetually, caved and played in the 1st XV and used to carve up teams from fullback.

I preferred smashing them over from the openside flank! 8)

    Vive les All Blacks!!! [:D]
  • The Haka is just emmence which ever sport is involved. Its a tradition that is unique to Rugby in both codes and shouldn't be sidelined EVER!

Great story about your old man! Hoping for a cracking game tomorrow, I think there'll be a serious battle in the forwards with Morely, Peacock, Crabtree etc against the likes of MoiMoi, Lima and Pritchard. Bring it!

  • One of my fondest memories of being at school was going to watch Auckland Boys Grammar play Kings College (Kings is NZ's equiv of Eaton). These schools have produced countless All Blacks and they hate each other with a passion on the rugby field.

Each school (like each maori tribe) has their own version of the haka. I went to watch the Grammar v Kings 1st XV's one year which were huge games - about 10,000 people along to watch a school boy game!

Anyway, both schools, not both teams, but both SCHOOLS stood on the sidelines and did their hakas to each other at the exact same time. It was pretty spine chilling to stand there whilst 1,000 boys on either sideline did that.

See? we don't do it to scare foreigners ... we scare the crap out of ourselves with it as well! 8)

Good luck tomorrow against a resiliant England following that second half performance against the Aussies last week.
I think however I'll be cheering on the Kiwis again at Leeds against The aussies in the final.

Two players deliberately pick him up, under the legs, turn him upside down and drive him into the ground. That's the definition of a spear tackle! They weren't clearing out the ruck because there was no clearing out to be done - the ball was already out and in play.
  • I'm just looking forward to tomorrow in general!

Wake up, maybe watch the Air NZ Cup Final on Sky, then hop on the bike for a few laps of Richmond Park (Etape training has begun :x ) then home for beers with mates whilst watching:

Eng v Aust (sorry I'm with the Aussies - it's a hemisphere thing)
    ABs v Wales
    Kiwis v England

    I'm SO excited!!!

I think the kiwis will find Crabtree a huge handful. I thought he plyed extremley well and has deserved a call up for a long time now. A very underated pleyer IMO. Peacock needs to step up massively, he was non exsistant against Aus.
Moi Moi could literally rip us apart if we allow him to much time to run onto the ball and don't get into his face quick enough. the guy is Superb.

Really looking forward to this game though I think The Kiwis will blitz us if we play like we did 1st half last week

  • I'm unsure on Crabtree... I don't think he's as good as his size would suggest, and Morely flattened him in the CC final. Likewise, Monaghan picked on him relentlessly from dummy half. He'll run all day for you though, good interchange option to have.

Peacock was playing 2nd row for most of last weeks game too as we have an embarressment of riches at 8 and 10. THink that may have explained how quiet he was.

I agree the later footage looked suspect. But it was unintentional and they WERE blowing out a ruck.

Ever played? You are so pumped up, you hit them at a million miles an hour and sometimes your timing is wrong. Each player came from different sides, it wasn't a co-ordinated effort to do that. Move on, it was a long time ago now. I know a number of NZers whose attitude to O'Driscoll have changed a lot because of the cry baby attitude over it all.

You're the one who replied to a post that's a year old

I agree that it was probably a heat-of-the-moment thing, but I think part of the problem was the way everyone in NZ - from the players, to the coaches, to the media, to the fans, utterly denied that there was anything wrong with the tackle.

It was the same as the Schalk Burger eye gouging this year. OK, that was a bit more blatant and pre-medidated than the spear tackle, but the kneejerk mass-defence by the SA camp was the same.

It's an independent L2P started by a group of us off here about a month ago as we couldn't afford to do it via a charity ( although some are doing it for individual charities of their own choice) . Really excited about it. This will be my first real cycling challenge. haha ok fair cop

In all seriousness though, at the time and even now, I still think there was nothing wrong with it based on the original footage at the time it was the cleaning out of a ruck and yes, CryBaby got hurt badly and I'm sorry about that as he is a good player but it wasn't intentional. Mealamu and Umaga aren't dirty players. In fact the previous year, Umaga stopped playing to pull Colin Charvis' tongue out of his throat after Jerry Collins put him in cuckoo land.

The way NZ saw it was that this jumped up spin doctor and this arrogant coach saw it as an excuse to latch onto and make more out of it that there should have been. They were cleared by a judiciary and OK, you didn't like it/didn't agree with it, it was done, move on, suck it up focus on the next game.

I agree with you that based on the later video footage the judicial decision may have been different, but people saying they are dirty players and did it intentionally are completely wrong. it was, or at least it was meant to be players blowing out a ruck. And blowing it out hard, as we are taught to do from the time we walk and which you Northern Hemispehere boys (who can't catch, pass and side step  ) love so much.

I also don't think you can compare a complete nutcase like Peter de Villiers to Graham Henry or any of the NZ management either.

England should do the traditional English war song afterward,

"You're going home in fncking ambulance!" repeat ad infinitum.

Or get a girl (rather badly dressed in a mini skirt and heels) to hold them back screaming "Leave him; he's not worth it".
