Cool,
So we have established a time, a place, our general riding abilities..... now where are we actually going?

Was going to try and plot something on bikeroutetoaster.com this week based on the routes shown earlier in this thread - riding in RP tomorrow night so probably Wed, then could post a link to the route for those of us with GPS to download?0 -

Yep, would love a preloaded map for the ride thanks Rich - I really must start to do some exploring and build up some local knowledge.
p.s. Dan the other guy coming with me is worried we will leave him for dead. Erm I think not.0 -

All I did was to modify one of the original courses linked to on the first page of this thread to cut out Leith Hill but still maintain a reasonable distance and a couple of decent climbs - I don't actually know the area particularly well so am open to suggestion on direction 8)0 -

what... down Box Hill... no 'challenge'?
Also, does that route allow for sufficient 'cakeage'? as in are we planning to stop or do the whole thing in one go, or play it by ear?0 -

Well a detour to Peaslake isn't out of the question... although I'm not entirely certain of the way to be honest! I'm sure it'd be signposted, then we could fairly easily get back on track. Otherwise I'm not entirely certain, unless we end with cake near the Lodge in RP?0 -
No anti clockwise is better, as felgen nicely outlined that way we get to go up box hill, but was just checking so I get it right for downloading the route.
BTW weather firming to be an absolute belter - looknig forward to it.

I am not too sure if I can make it as I have a slightly dodgy knee and a hacking cough at the moment. However I know the area reasonably well so am happy to add my 2p worth.
1. Some of the route you have picked is quite high traffic. Assuming you would like the least amount of traffic possible I have constructed a Bikely map with a few changes, namely around Effingham, Esher and Leatherhead. It's not perfect but I believe a better bet.
2. I would also recommend going up to Leith Hill. If going Anti clockwise on the map then this is the easiest way up with close to a 2 mile descent into Dorking. The roads are very quite and a good surface.
3. If you want a Cake stop then Boxhill has a very popular one however it's not cheap. Peaslake is also an option, as mentioned, so I mapped a route to get you guys there.
4. Anyone with Bike probs then there is run of the mill shop in Cobham high street and Cycles Dauphin is 5 mins from the top of Boxhill, on the right if your route is anti clock.

http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/213901 Leith hill route

Hope all this is off some help, sorry if this seems like am trashing your ideas Richhttps://www.bikeauthority.cc/

Hmmm.... with cake and Leith Hill, thats 70 miles... not to be sniffed at. As practice I did a couple of little hills tonight, only 130 metres of climbing and I blew up horribly going up! Still looking forward to it though.0

Just spent tonight punching in the Peaslake Route into Mapsource....thats 133Kms Door to Door for me
Have ridden that far before but not without atleast one break somewhere in between to refuel

Suggestions appreciated Jackal (and I don't feel like my ideas are trashed for reasons offered!), but the route was decided on mainly because it avoided Leith Hill and because it totalled less than 55 miles - given that some wanted to be back by 2pm I bargained that 55 miles was about the top end factoring stops in. Also most of us said hill climbing wasn't high on the agenda, hence leaving out Leith Hill.
Given that the suggested changes don't actually add or detract much from the original plan other than a minor alteration around Leatherhead I suggest we stick with the plan and amend en route if need be - bring snacks for stops and/or a little bit of cash (I planned to anyway, even if it was just an energy bar and gel or two and a couple of quid) and if cake near Box Hill is decided on then so be it, I am more than happy to tuck in!! 8)
Jackal - bad knee and hacking cough or not come along mate, it'll be a good ride and a fairly gentle pace so although I've basically rejected your very kind offers of amended routes (and they are much appreciated suggestions) it'd be good to have you come along! I'll have done a 40 mile MTB ride the day before so won't exactly be 'fresh'! Go on, you know you want to!
Right chaps, might not get much chance to respond between now and then so see you Sunday! I suggest we meet at Richmond Gate at 9:45, ready to roll at 10am - I'm looking forward to it! 8)0 -
bah... if you are doing 40 miles MTB today I am off to 'improve' my 3 lap best round RP.... 8)0
-
Well I am definitely not coming now my suggestions have been ignored.... only kidding.
I am actually feeling much better today and am quite eager to ride as I haven't been on my bike for a week. Judging by my efforts to meet up with Emu last weekend I wouldn't count on it but I will see how things are in the morning.Rich-Ti wrote:Given that the suggested changes don't actually add or detract much from the original plan other than a minor alteration around Leatherhead
Agreed that the changes are minor but I believe you will find it a more enjoyable group ride(ie easier to keep the group together) by using them. If you were on your own then there is not too much in it, just less cars.https://www.bikeauthority.cc/

See you all tomorrow for 10am take off from Richmond Gate.
Not sure what I'll be wearing but will be the tall guy on a white willier.

Bugger, cant get the route to upload..... anyone know what this error means?
Fatal Error: File Path: String Stream, line: 1, char: 55 Message: Invalid document structure0 -
Gents, if I don't go to the London Freeze thing tomorrow I may join you. Fairly similar times at RP as you all, major difference is I seem to seem to be getting slower every week
If I do make it I'll be on a black Specialized with a blue top on.0 -

Fair comment too Jackal, and hopefully see you there as well 8)
Just back from my MTB ride so I could be a little slow tomorrow, but I'm about to have a good stretch and load up on recovery drink and carbs so fingers crossed all will be well! :roll:0
