oh and if in doubt drop in a factoid from the parcours press release -

Sound familiar? At least a pretty decent drinking game could be constructed from it

That's spooky. You don't think they're actually robots do you?

stop it stop, I can't take any more.

It makes Duffers "...says he tapping the side of his nose" line almost acceptable.

Wanted to promote this thread back up the pecking order (rather than do the usual trick of starting a new one) to discuss the performance of Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen on the opening night of Tour Down Under coverage on Sky Sports last night.

For me, they were utterly terrible from beginning to end. With Sherwen getting two "... in the sport of professional cycling" quotes in before two laps had been covered.

We had the Team Leeygas nonsense again and that farcical interview with Lance which I felt embarassed watching.

If Sky are listening, please dont use these two for the Tour Series City Centre cycling you are running during the summer.

    GET DAVID HARMON!!!!

FWIW the world champs in manchester last year had Hazel Irvine doing the commentary and Jamie Staff was the pro who knew what he was talking about along side her, I thought they were good...

Hugh Porter does the commentary, Hazel Irvine is the presenter

  • I just feel they have done the job too long now and need a rest. Their cliche's were insightful information back in the 80's, comical in the 90's but annoying in the 00's.

Very sad that they are past their sell by date, but time for a change.

Harmon and Kelly every time for me

Having said that I met Sherwen and Liggers at the Rennes ITT at the tour a couple of years back and they were really nice guys.

Had a great chat about the old days of Channel 4 in the 80s when I was getting into the sport and they were very friendly

I particularly enjoyed 'Greipel started racing in 1995 - the same year that Lance Armstrong retired!' in terms of an utterly gratuitous mention of Armstrong during a sprint finish in which he took no part.

Loved them on C4 but unfortunately any objectivity they once had has been bougfht bu USDiscatana - shame as they sometimes turn a phrase like no other - better than Harmon and his endless use of the word 'weeny' anyway.

But, on balance, in 2009, Kelly (and his sidekick Harmon) for insightful 'been there' race reading commentary every time

Who will ever forget such gems of the English language such as:

Harmon and Kelly are not slick enough for me, nor do they spend enough time commentating on what's happening. At least Phil etc stick to the racing, tourist stuff aside, though the cliches do get irritating.

Harmon and Kelly should go sit down in front of a tv and watch a race with the Flemish commentators for a week and see how they should commentate. Those guys seem to have a 30 second crystal ball on everything and genuinely add value by pointing out stuff you wouldn't have, as well as constantly informing you on what is happening and developing. They know all the little intricate rivalries, spot all the details etc etc.

I can never forgive Duffield for his 2007 Milan-San Remo gig when during the whole of the climb up the Poggio he decided to tell us about the 1992 edition. *shakes with rage*.

Did anyone else hear Paul Sherwen get a bit mixed up during the sprint of the last stage of the tdu when francesco chicchi won the sprint. He couldn't seem to decide whether to say Chicchi or liquigas and ended up shouting leekygas.

Well my favourite Sherwin moment of the Tour Down Under came in Stage 5 (on Friday). Now, as you are well aware, the 'non-live' stages are edited down to 25 minutes and then Phil and Paul commentate over the footage. (Although I did hear one bystander on the road explaining to his wife that "Paul Sherwin is quite clever dear. Did you see him driving that car with Phil - and he does that whilst he commentates. Amazing!).

Anyway, you don't think Sherwin (or Ligget for that matter) could make too many mistakes. Well on the Friday, Eisel went to the front of the peloton. Paul said, 'here comes a Team Columbia rider. Looks like Andre Greipel to me'.

Pretty good effort from the German rider considering he had already caught a plane to head back home following his crash.

At least Sherwin didn't mention Uganda. (Not that I picked up anyway).
  • at least it isnt just me thinking it is time for them to go.
