It could of course be that they're used to speaking in French, still the main language of the peloton/pro-cycling although English is coming-in fast.

Denis is pronounced 'Denn-ee' if you're French/Italian/etc and only as 'Denn-iss' in English

    - Menchov is of course a Russian - dunno how they'd pronounce it !

The thing with Team Sherwin is that you could completely construct their commentary for the 2008 Tour by editing their 2007 Tour commentary. They are always saying the exact same thing, on the exact same tone, in the exact same situation. Sherwin's interventions are so predictable you can lip-sync to them. Give me Harmon and Kelly over that any day!

but... Caddy Evans? really? that's bad.

David Harmon said my name twice yesterday in the commentary after I emailed him asking him to do more impressions - he kindly gave me Cadel Evans but it wasn't as good as his Cunego.

I don't mind Harmon and Kelly but I'd like to hear Brian Smith and the McCrossan brothers do the TDF if given a choice.

Personally I think Harmon is excellent.

Used to really enjoy Liggett and Sherwen when I was first getting into cycling (ahh the halcyon days of C4 at 6.30 8) ) but I think now I'm more knowledgable they have the propensity to annoy. How much of that is down to that fact that they're doing essentially three commentary's at once, I don't know.

Think 5Live with Peter Slater & Graham Jones has been very good during this year's TdF too.

I'd like to offer Liggett and Sherwen a challenge - do 5 mins of commentary without mentioning either Lance Armstrong or US Postal/Discovery. They'd fail.

Liggett and Sherwen really really really get on my tits, they are so fucking annoying, with their absolutely awful cliches and Liggetisms, and dont get me going on the name pronunciation thing, Leekygas and Dennee FFS Christ they do my tree in, Give me Harmon and Kelly anyday ( at least I can only hear one of them)

Thank you for listening, this was a public service rant on behalf of ITV4 viewers :D

i'd most like to see Brian partner David Harmon and let Kelly retire to his farm.
Brian has been a revelation to me since finding 'cycling.tv' just like he was destined to be the perfect co-commentator/pundit.

I've said it before and I say it again:
Count up how many times Sherwin says 'bike race' and 'machine'.
    Drives me insane.
So I watch Eurosport but there Harmon keeps saying Cheechee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But I am getting to quite like Carlton from Paris; a great improvement on Mike Smith

Yep, ITV 4 Commentary is terrible Eurosport is very good, admittedly it sufers from similar problems as ITV4, with the same things being said each year, but it isn't nearly as formulaic as ITV4s.

I think the ITV4 programmes are done with newcomers in mind. They seem to take enjoyment out of pointing out the blatantly obvious and I assume they are doing it for someones benefit. I bugs me when you watch the highlights programme they always do that email thing and they always pick out such crappy questions like "who was the youngest person to win the tour"? You must have a FU*&NG computer you sent an email. Use it and do a google search you lazy BA"£$RDS.
I like watching the Eurosport coverage and always have done, even when Duffers had started to lose the plot and stopped commentating on the boring old bike racing, where Armstrong had just left Ullrich for dead on the climb, but instead used that time to tell us about the smashing meal he'd had last night and that the service had been particularly good.
I do like Harmon and Kelly. Every now and again they have their slight disagreements about the riders/teams tactics and I like that.
Harmon was even mocking Lance Armstrong fans the other day. Saying that someone had emailed asking if any rider had won all the jerseys. He stated that Eddy Mercx had, and went on to add in a very condescending tone "and there are some people that think Lance Armstrong was the best rider in the history of the tour".

The Liggett/Sherwen commentary isn't just for ITV. Its also for Versus in America, South Africa, Australia and the ASO themselves. This allows ITV to produce the programme at a financially viable cost. Without the catering of foreign audiences, it wouldn't be on ITV at all.

Hmm...you would have thought with all those people watching they would try and put on a good show. Apparently on the live feed, they missed Cav's first victory

For me Harmon is beyond criticism. What are the other options?

The mad as a hatter Duffield? Ned Boulting?

Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen were the commentary team throughout my formative years of watching the Tour, but it is time for a change. I am sorry to say that they are tired in their output and cliche has set in.

Duffield never really commentated on what was going on in the race. His highlight being the Paris Roubaix he lost his voice and just croaked over the mic!!!

David Harmon is passionate about the sport (as the Pez interview shows) and is building a good rapport with Sean Kelly, a man whose insight should be there for all to see.

The studio back up with James Richardson is better with Eurosport too!

Eurosport 10 - ITV4 1 (and that one is Gary Imlach!)
  • Harmon and Duffield together, yes it has happened, on Eurosport of course, I can't remember which race, but the commentary was excellent. Harmon took up the role of main commentator, and Duffield the "Colour" man. There was some prickly competition, with Duffield pointing out Harmons errors, and vice versa, but then they settled into the roles and it worked really well.
So as a "Fantasy" commentary team they would get my vote.
Sean Kelly certently needs some majorly elocution lessons. :?
If you see the candle as flame, the meal is already cooked.

  • If it wasn't for Imlach I'd struggle even more than I do with ITV4, he brings more to it than Phil, Paul, Ned, Chris and Matt put together and he's on screen/heard less than them.

I know it's hard to talk for 5 hours about people cycling bicylces but when the action hots up and things get crucial Paul and Phil revert to speaking like a playstation commentary team.

Bob Roll is more interesting on the Podcast, he gets a thumbs up. Eurosport internet feed from me when possible.

What do people think of those daft questions Harmon fields all day, on long stages?
I happen to know that some of the old ES forum members have him on a wind up. There's a bit of a competition, to see who can get the most stupid question answered on air.
Several have planned an ambush for today.......

I think people are being a bit harsh on old Harmon. I think he does a really good job keeping the interest up during the quiet patches, and his natural excitement comes through when the drama starts. And as for Kelly, I think he's improving. Overall I'm really enjoying Harmon and Kelly's output this year.

I've only got Eurosport this year i have to say Harmon is simply excellent!! You can tell he is a true fan, who seems to ride part of each stage every morning. Not only that he manages to keep you interested without talking complete balls. Kelly takes getting used to but even he is softening up and becoming more confident. Some of the jokes he slips in can go unnoticed but he is really funny.

As many here i was brought up on Sherwin and Liggett, but of course as we gain ore knowledge about our wonderful sport those two become redundant. Not just going over the same lame ass facts every year but explaining them word for word as they have done for the past 20 years.

dull dull dull..... More Harmon please! A true Cyclists commentator!!

There is one flaw in Harmons commentary, his constant mentioning of Cannondale.

Harmon made heavy references earlier to having had Italians write in to him to tell him it's pronounced Koon-i-go, not Koo-nay-go

Either completely over Kelly's head or he's just too bloody-minded, he keeps going on about Koo-nay-go - in fact has done it twice as I type !

    Pipo Pozzato.
Like he's potato's mother or something.
Or is that how you pronounce Filippo in italian?

If Paul Sherwen rants on any more about the 'front-end' of the main field I fear for the safety of my tv screen!!!!
The superiority of Harmon and Kelly over Liggett and Sherwen is vast.

I've heard quite a few people criticise Kelly , and he probably hasn't got the most interesting voice but his knowledge of racing and tactics is second to none , certainly .
