Doh! Noticed how the Drag Strip seems to run in the perfect direction to pick up the tailwind at present :-D

I'm not looking forward to going home on the entire route from blackfriars to earls court. One of those bits will be directly against :(

Another recovery ride this morning - first day back after another chest "episode" (would you believe! ).

Still a bit rough, so taking it very easy indeed. Ashamed to admit that I was almost caught napping by a dude on a blue Brompton. I would up to defense speed but regretted that almost immediately. Fortunately he went straight through Vauxhall cross where I continued to Kennington Ln so I could revert back to a crawl.

I've been on my new asthma meds now for three days - should start to see a positive effect within a week or so.

Despite the flags in the carpark blowing directly towards home tonight, it still wasn't a direct tailwind.

And how hopeless is the feeling when you're barrelling up a hill, massively over-geared because of the wind pushing you along, then the wind drops or suddenly blasts against you.
  • That was no way near as bad as a I thought - parly still closed so I went back up birdcage and via const hill - some wind but it was so random never felt *that* against you.

yeah, it wasn't that bad. Just enough for a nice workout.

I'm starting to enjoy the wind.. :?

What a disappointment. The wind was no worse than yesterday, I think even it was slightly lighter, and no rain. I was looking forward to a battle royale.

Todays wind was the opposite of yesterdays and in my face most of the way into work :(:( The only tailwind was from the baked beans for tea last night
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

That was hard going. Just got home and actually had a bit of tit for tat with a nippy chap on a Ribble on Embankment. Quite a quick moving woman on a Colnago too.

Not sure. Didn't get to see the Colnago name up that close. She was coming from the Tower Bridge area. Ribble dude had a white long sleeve windbreaker jacket and white socks, black tights.

  • Bring back the wind! Much preferred to the rain this morning :-) Still picked up a handy little helper along past Clapham Common, keeping it the fun side of 25 as I had a pretty tidy ride alongside it :-D

Had to rein it just before Stockwell as the lights on the ped crossing changed. RLJing roadie from earlier went on through so I duly caught up and scalped him! He went along Kennington Road after Stockwell so didn't get to do him again :-(

One quick one from last night aimed at DDD - Do Luciano cycles do their own frames? Spotted a chap walking with a kid last night with a Luciano branded TT bike.....looked very nice!

After the nonsense with the rear tyre the last couple of nights on the Kona, and an irritating 30 mins repairing inner tubes last night, I decided to take the Scott in today. Haven't ridden it in over months, I think. Wow! What a difference to the Kona! Light, responsive (almost too responsive at times), and just all round brilliant.

Get to Embankment and, well, it was like shooting fish in barrel.

I managed 11 continuous miles this afternoon with almost no pain :D

I'm very very happy, going to try 20 tomorrow

  • Took a different route home this evening.......knowing Parlit Square - LBR was shut I headed over Westminster Bridge and got a huge shock as road layout has changed! Followed lanes for E&C/A23 and headed for Kennington Lane. When we eventually cleared the temp lights by The Cut I tustled with a few other roadies (and would like to ask WTF was the women on the hybrid doing boxing me in.....did you REALLY think you'd get off faster then me!!!! FFS) on the way down before finding some proper competition on Kennington Lane.

One was a roadie that I'm sure I've seen in the Morden/Worcester Park area when in the car on the way to Woking, older Cannondale bike, silver frame with red/yellow decals - some others on the Drag Strip might have encountered him. He is FAST or to put it better he has a very high cruising speed. I managed to eek out a small lead at some points but spent most of the ride just trying to hang on! Between the 2 of us we managed to drop another roadie, partly due to my slightly higher speed at one point and some enthusiastic filtering.....

I got ahead again on the small hill down past the Shell/BK in Balham only for some stupid bint to try flattening us turning right into a road - seems my lights OBVIOUSLY aren't bright enough, that or she doesn't think a cyclist can go that fast.....Cannondale chap did a sterling job of a loud whistle and rolled past instructing the driver to look better in the future :-) So if that was you this evening I'd like to say a big Thank You :-) I don't often find people as quick as you along there and it was good fun :-D

I think this evening tho was the night for ignorant drivers. After narrowly missing being taken out from the right, I spotted 3 cars sans lights - one of whom seemed to take ages to get through a rather large gap. As I came up behind to come round I realized what the problem was - her windscreen at the front was completely misted up so her and her daughter where frantically trying to wipe it so she could see where she was going......and to think people like this are allowed to re-produce and drive!
The usual ejits on phones and a few more near misses meant I was glad to get home this evening.

    Heh heh. That was good.

Anyone on here ride a red Cannondale and was on Embankment around 7.30 tonight? :)

Then took the same route home as a rather swift looking chap on a nice, yellow, steel Sigma - through Sheen, Rihcmond and Teddington before he turned off to Hampton. Nice sedate ride. Exactly what I needed!

I've finally taken the plunge and made my first post. It's very reassuring to know that there are so many other sufferers of, how shall we say, an overtaking complex.

My route is up through Hackbridge, Mitcham, Streatham High Road into Brixton Road, over the A3 to Kennington Road, then round to Blackfriars Bridge and up to Old Street via Smithfield. Two or three good dragstrips, but I miss out on most of the 'classic' SCR locations. I think I share part of my route with a few of the regulars, but not the times: normally in 8-9am and out any time from 6.30 to 8pm.

Yesterday was pretty thin from an SCR point of view as I had a meeting in Hampton Wick first thing, so came in through Kingston, Wandsworth, and Vauxhall around midday. I did come across a council employee on Kingston Vale carefully blowing leaves from the pavement into a neat strip completely obscuring the bike lane - superb!

Slightly overcooked it on the section of the A3 from Robin Hood Gate up past Asda, so the run home was taken steady, with thankfully only a few MTBs to contend with on Brixton Road.

I was wondering.... how many bonus points for overtaking a blind cyclist? I've not seen him on my commute but sometimes see a guy at the weekends round Regents Park.

How on earth do you know he's blind? Does he have a white stick on his handlebars or a guide dog on a tag-a-long ;-)

    guide dog on a tag-a-long ;-)

Nah the dog sits on the handlebars and barks once for left and twice for right.

Seriously though, it's a tandem with a a sighted rider on the front. Reason i know he's blind is he has it written in big letters on his hi-viz jacket.

Fair play :-) They do a session similar to that at Croydon Sports Arena, they have a load of adapted tandems so that people usually unable to ride a bike by themselves can get out for a ride with a volunteer rider. I was considering offering to help but unfortunately I already have plenty of family commitments at the weekends otherwise I think it could have been good fun :-D

  • Well that was a bit wet but fun. Scalped a couple of fixies near the end before I turn off for blackfriars and the silly buggers spun themselves silly and were wobbling side to side due to this to take it back - especially in the wet too was rather stupid.

Goretex jacket... breatheable my arse. Arms wetter on the inside than out.
