I don't have a problem with my torso as I can always add another layer quite easily but what do people do for legs below a certain temperature?

Obviously I had leggings on over my shorts but at these temps it's not really warm enough and you can't really double layer leggings. What do people here do (other than just get on with it)?

Today was pro team "thermal" shorts and knee length ski socks, with padless dhb roubaix tights over the top. Warm.
  • That was a chilly one! Lovely and quiet though, fewer cars, bikes and peds than usual :D

Visit from the PF was a bit annoying, my fingers didn't quite recover from pulling a Durano back onto the rim in Hyde Park. Think I picked it up at the lights crossing into the park at Albert gate, one of my least favourite lights for RLJers and this morning after I waited patiently as 3 or 4 other cyclists sailed through the red, the lights then skipped the bike green and went straight back to cars!! Having already started pulling away I deployed anchors and locked up the rear. I'm pretty sure skidding is the main cause of punctures (for me)

No SCR this morning, chilled mode. Maybe later :D

Edit: I don't really find leg temperature an issue. As long as hands, feet and head are okay then I layer/de-layer as required for my body

Seems we use the same tights although my shorts are just regular shorts. Hadn't considered using ski socks - I'll give that a go, thanks.

I either wear bibshorts with a pair of Gore leggings, or Sportful Fiandre long bibs which are also great. I don't ride bare knees below about 12 degrees, it might be psychological but a previous knee injury makes me want to keep them nice and toasty. Last winter I also suffered with a hip flexor injury, which was partly down to not stretching them but also I think that in very cold weather where I wore standard summer bibshorts plus leg warmers didn't help them, hence me wrapping up warmer this winter.
  • Re legs, my approach is bodgy in keeping with my general approach to cycling and life - padded MTB undershorts, a pair of full-length running leggings, and 3/4 bibs over the top. Takes a while to get dressed and undressed but works for me. Been wearing two base layers & arm warmers under my normal soft-shell this week, and two pairs of socks, natch.

I have some PlanetX windstopper bibs for these super cold days which were £21 in a Fibonacci sale a while ago. They don't seem to do the same thing any more but I imagine the Roubaix ones are similar. I didn't ride today because I'm off on holiday tonight but they were toasty yesterday morning.

Far fewer cyclists today. I think the resolutionist wave is receding....
Yes it was nearly -9 degrees T* as I exited RP, which meant in reality -7 C . No discernible ice in RP, but some of the older stretches of tarmac are quite shiny, especially between Kingston Gate and Ham X, so difficult to tell...

Anyone know what was going on around Waterloo Bridge/Aldwych earlier? I went through around 5 and there were long queues of traffic with much beeping of horns approaching the Aldwych/Strand/Bridge junction, and motorbike coppers directing traffic. Then on the other side of the bridge, there was a cop car blocking the northbound side. Rather odd.
I had to drive in London yesterday and got stuck in it. Took me 3 hours to get home.

It was the Black Cab protest, I assume against the ULEZ as about 30% of taxis are non-compliant. It literally started as I was going down Southampton Row, so i was right in the middle of it.

    LOL

-8.5G in the park for me, up to -0.8G in the City.

Doubly cold through the park because my girlfriend was riding in today, and likes to ride together. Unfortunately her default speed (13-14mph on the flat today) seems to be fast enough to create a decent wind chill, without actually requiring enough effort to create any warmth. No wonder she's always cold!

I think it's their automatic kneejerk reaction to anything which threatens their livelihoods. Not that they were made redundant by a Tomtom some 16 years ago.
If I know you, and I like you, you can borrow my bike box for £30 a week. PM for details.

Yeah, plus if they hadn't refused to take card payments for so many years and had been charging slightly more sensible fares they'd find way more people used them rather than defaulting to Uber. Zero sympathy, they are reaping what they sowed.

An example on fares - I flew into London City airport at 9.30pm on Monday eve. An Uber would cost £48 to get me back to Kingston, and just for comparison I asked a black cab driver what he'd be charging - he told me it would be about £100  Needless to say I Uber'd it home, took 65 mins.
  • I laugh when cabbies say they're anti-Uber because of safety.

They're not so all about safety when they're campaigning to have segregated cycle lanes removed. Or performing sudden u-turns.

Is this safety of other road users, or safety of passengers? My completely anecdotal impression is that black cab drivers tend to be more competent than minicab drivers, but that doesnt stop them being dangerous. I've only ever been hit by two cars whilst cycling in London; both were black cabs, and both did it on purpose.

As for safety of passengers, at typical London traffic speeds I doubt many accidents result in significant injuries to the occupants.

If it's getting in a car with an unknown driver that's a concern, neither black cabs nor Uber have a 100% track record, and I think I'd rather be in a vehicle whose location is being tracked constantly.

in my book that would also make them amongst the more competent of drivers, because I've seen plenty of others try to get you and miss...

Quick question, back on the SCR topic.

What's the FCN modifier for spiked tyres?
Intent on Cycling Commuting on a budget, but keep on breaking/crashing/finding nice stuff to buy.

Remember that taking an uber just support all their incompetent driving being a thing of the past as they phase out the driver... 24,000 automated Volvos on order.

Depends on the terrain, they could be deemed as an advantage!

Must be at least +1, they're hard work on the flat and bloody hard work up ~5% inclines!

I did a lap of the Tamsin trail and only clocked -4.5°C. Temperature varied by up to 2°C depending on where I was on the trail.

    Roubaix bib longs for me.

Well that was disappointing. Took the old MTB hack in and even in Bushy Park it was just wet and slushy. Didn't see many people and absolutely nobody heading in my direction so no competition.

Cx tyres and headwind just made it effortful and slow. Weather forecasts are bollox.
