Anyone know what happened on Lambeth Bridge roundabout (north side) last night, just before 8pm?

At the start of the southbound carriageway, by the zebra crossing, there was ambulance parked up, with paramedics attending to someone on the pavement, and a road bike propped up against the wall.

Also on the train today as I'm being forced to see the Harry Potter play (for the second time) tonight.
Oh, it's also a play in 2 parts, second part tomorrow, so train again for me!

  • I used to commute from Tooting to Chancery Lane but have since got a new job in Hackney and there are two obvious differences. The first isn't too surprising but it's that almost everyone on the ride in wears some sort of lycra but by the time I get beyond Liverpool Street it's the complete opposite and I am one of the very few. The other is how the wind does a complete 180 after going under the bridge on Shoreditch High street... it'd make sense if there were lots of high rises channel the wind in some way, but there aren't. Oh and an extra 2 miles on the commute each way does make a noticeable difference by the end of the week
  • Wind? What wind? Maybe a little breezy, lol - Ashamed to say it but I've had to use the little ring on the flat these last two days on the way home.

That headwind between Balham and Bec was awful this evening.

I fancy that tomorrow on CS7, and being Friday, if it's not too wet, there's gonna be quite a few PB's set on the way to work! And a bunch more pain on the way home.

I don't mind a headwind*, but it's the unexpected strong gusts which pose the biggest hazard.

I had to come come out of the park at Robin Hood Gate last night as the wind gusting across the open space was knocking me a couple of feet sideways.

Looking at the forecast for today I've opted for safety over PBs and coming in on the train.

  • Was on PT yesterday so avoided the fun. Breezy but manageable this morning. Was expecting much more debris on the road after the wind last night. Encountered a few fastish looking people but there was a disappointing lack of unbrage being taken to my overtakes. Guess that means I disaptched all-comers...roaaarrr
  • had too much to eat and far too much to drink last night so left home 30 mins later than usual nursing a hangover. Not the best way to ride into work.

    Top ho! Wizard puns.

Do you muggles mind if I Slytherin with some?

But to be Sirius for a moment I've been pretty quiet both on here and on the commuting front recently. I was MTB'ing in Morzine and broke my wrist really badly on 9th July and haven't ridden since then.

I broke both bones and one was in four pieces. It had to be plated under general anaesthetic. It's now a long slog back via physiotherapy.

Oh and I've put on a stone in weight too so not happy, not happy at all.

Best of luck with your recovery!
I broke a wrist skiing in Bulgaria last year and lost 2 months of riding. My break doesn't sound as bad as yours though, the delay to getting back on a bike was predominantly the docs saying not to so I didn't fall and break it again until the repair had consolidated - I felt fine a long time before that. Couldn't bring myself to get on a turbo though so I put the weight on too.

    Ouch.

If you will insist on riding off-road though...

I broke my arm once, snapped the end of the ulna clean off at the elbow. 2 Pins and a wire inserted in a figure of 8 round the pin to pull the 2 bits together, done under general.

I've got a wicked scar from the op and as we all know, chicks dig scars

    Thanks guys,

They haven't said when i can get back on the bike but they have said they start work on strengthening the wrist at week 12 (yesterday, Thursday was nine weeks to the day after the op).

I did actually have a small bimble last Sunday on a flat-barred road bike, 3.6 km to collect my car after a night out (see Strava for scar & x-ray/plate pic).

Suffice to say it was sore enough that I can't yet see myself stepping up to the 60km commute a day I have been doing for the last nine years.

    Bionic doping!
You'll get back there I'm sure.
I'm slightly bionic too (another ski trip fracture from back in the 90's)

How did you manage to break that skiing? Doesn't the boot hold all that part together?

Err... could have been a 4am apres ski injury on the way home from a bar.
The wrist break actually was skiing as was the other leg break I incurred in 1987. I only have one limb left!
  • This evening’s ride was eventful - managed to crash into a skateboarder who pinged into the cycle lane by Embankment tube station. Managed to stay upright which is the main thing.

Sorry to hear that but Xmas is just around the corner and the weather is shite, gets some beer and pie on that injury ASAP

  • Sorry to hear about the break, some gentle turbo bimbling, as god awaful as it sounds? No broken bones here but I have snapped my Arione in two!

Bang on goldilocksed it this morning, if it meant freezing for the first 3k. Was too early for all the full peletons of nodders but did notice a lack of bright red legs out there so maybe they are starting to drop away.
If I know you, and I like you, you can borrow my bike box for £30 a week. PM for details.

Wow, I've had proper 'seasonal shock' this morning. Been off the bike for two weeks and the commute clothing has gone from shorts and a ss jersey to full on tights, thermal socks, ls jersey, full finger gloves and gillet. And it was dark.

Can't be winter already can it?!

No, it's Autumn. This evening, you'll be wishing you'd worn your Summer kit with arm and leg warmers, and thrown a pair of Summer gloves in your bag.

Unless you finish work really late, the days when you can comfortably ride both ways in tights and long sleeves are probably another month away...

  • Had an early start this morning - left Surbiton at 05:45. Unfortunately, I didn't think too much about the temperature or my clothing so I went with the usual shorts, short sleeve summer jersey and no mitts/gloves. I was seriously regretting that lack of thinking 4 miles miles in to the commute when I was riding through the early morning (freezing) mist of Richmond Park. I had to stop at the Robin Hood Gate car park to try and warm my hands up under my armpits. I was so cold, I could barely operate Di2 switches!! Luckily, the normal pattern of temperature prevailed and it was appreciably warmer by the time I got to Putney Bridge. It still took 5 minutes of standing in a hot shower at work before all of my extremities started to function normally.

Looked like a cyclist had gone through the rear window of a white 4x4 heading east just past Vauxhall Bridge this morning. Old bill in attendance and cyclist wasn't embedded in the screen or anything but can't correlate the broken screen with any other explanation!
