You want the doors open; colleague wants the heating on. How to keep everyone happy?

Simples: Turn the heating on *and* open the doors.

bad enough being close passed at high speed on a country road where there is absolutely nothing for the next mile in the opposite lane coming towards us...but then you see theyve got bikes on the roof rack

That is the most disappointing one, beating the illogical motorist who stops to tell you at great length how you’ve been holding him up.

Following on from removing the half-decent cycle lanes along a section of busy road to widen the footway on one side, my local council have now gone to the effort of grinding off the cycle lane markings on the remaining bits of cycle lane and moving them inwards 6 inches so in places the cycle lane in now about 18 inches wide.

Where? That's worth a formal complaint to the council.

I know comments like the one I'm about to make are annoying, but this is absolutely standard sh!t, isn't it?

Is it shocking? No worse than car users to do other car users to get into a gap when there is lots of traffic.

Hard to get the perspective from a camera.

Certainly doesn't happen to me that often.

If it it happening "as standard", it doesn't mean we should accept it.

Yes, i don't think the video really gives justice to how close it was, it seems also a lot slower in the video that in real life!

Agreed it ought not to be standard and i can imagine the video is rather more chill than it felt or actually was.

TBH I think it is an inevitable consequence of sharing roads with motor transport.

There isn't much of a solution that involves road sharing.

I now drive quite a bit (I don't actually mind it for journeys I wouldn't be doing on the bike) and in the car I get affected by similar amounts of bad driving. It's just what you get when everyone drives. Noone seems agree on how roundabouts work, that's for sure.

I had a good right hooker just last week, similar distance allowed but mine was shortly after coming down Balham Hill so I was going over 30mph - funny thing is I didn't even react... the guy behind me certainly did but I think I've cooled down a bit/just accept it now!

Me: I managed to post the following in the brexit thread

Rant: I totally hate close passes by motorcycles and mopeds. The sad thing is, I'm sure mopeds know how it feels to be bullied by heavier vehicles. Come on mate, I may actually try to avoid the pothole ahead, maybe give me more than a feet or two while overtaking at speed.

This is particularly bad in Spain.

Not as scarey as the right hook video posted earlier involving the lorry, but after reading that post, I had a mini-drama on my way back from buying some groceries.

Car on a minor side road ahead to my left, wanting to turn right, with a car travelling ~20m in front of me. I've got my right arm out indicating to turn right, but as soon as the car ahead of me passes the left minor road, car in the side road decides to begin turning right... While looking straight at me!

Driver slams on the anchors, albeit their car is blocking all but the rightmost ~25% of the road, but there's no way I'm going to chance maintaining my ~15mph to swerve into that space so I slam on the anchors too. I get a lip-synced "Sorry" through the closed window as she proceeds to carry on her way.

The Highway Code rules of giving way at various junctions are being increasingly ignored, it's becoming more about "bully tactics" due to driver impatience as their journeys are taking longer because there are so many more cars on the road at all hours than there were 20+ years ago. Junction priority is becoming more about who is going to come off worse in the event of a collision, whether that's car vs bike or lorry vs car, the bigger vehicle road user is often now bullying their way through junctions regardless of what the Highway Code says should happen at said junction.

I think it would generate a shake of the head, but not much because I would have been expecting a right turning vehicle to go into that gap.

That is not to deny that it is indeed terrible driving.

There was no gap. I was there. Plus the pedestrian was crossing the road he was turning into, who had to run.

If there wasn't a gap, you wouldn't be typing that. There wasn't a gap anywhere big enough for the driver to safely make that manouevre, true. I'd expect a driver to do that, because I expect all drivers to go for any gap in front of a cyclist.

got close passed numerous times on the way in today so was in no mood to quibble with anyone on the way back, but one of the drivers I saw close up, literally looked like this as he had to wait all of 5 seconds to let me pass
    angry-motorist-wants-angry-jogger.jpg

it really wouldnt have surprised me in the least if he'd then suddenly turned green and started shouting "Hulk smash cyclist"

I've observed this before - sometimes they look right through you, just don't actually see you. They are genuinely shocked when you, apparently, suddenly appear right in front of them.

I've concluded that ambulances and the patient transport vehicles also plastered with ambulance signs are now paid by commission only.

cycling along the road I live on, white van driving along the right hand side of the road coming towards me, passes several places he could stop in between parked cars to let people by, he just about stops to let the car infront of me squeeze past him, does he wait 10secs more to let me pass as well...of course not Im just a poxy cyclist and he accelerates to try and force me out of the way. so we meet and stop facing each other.

where upon I spend the next 5mins in an exceedingly unproductive conversastion about who was in the wrong, clearly I thought he was, whilst he felt he'd saved my life by not running me over, gee thanks, and he was having none of it that he should have waited as he had done for the car or that I had every right to cycle in my lane and not in the gutter, we are supposed to keep to the left side of the road, yes hard to follow that one when the van is effectively driving down the right hand side of the road in that case

the really annoying thing is that t**t drives off,not just believing he was still totally right, but that he was actually behaving as a good driver because of it, my only solace is I wasted far more time of his than he would have remotely gained and certainly more time than had he just waited.

but you suddenly realise thats how alot of majority of motorists see us, we arent even valid road users in their eyes as cyclists, we are people who should just get out of their way

Approaching roundabout to take second exit (straight on), at some speed. Car approaches from first exit, driver looks RIGHT AT ME... and then proceeds onto roundabout, causing me to clamp on the anchors, skid, and pray that I scrubbed off enough speed not to end up a smear on her windscreen. She carries on as I remonstrate with her... Then drives all the way round the roundabout and pulls up alongside me swearing her f***ing head off (with her boyfriend/husband/trained ape alongside her providing the descant) telling me I was 'riding too fast' and that I 'should give way to traffic from the left' when entering a roundabout. What f***ing hope is there? Honestly? When people are that unaware of the basic rules of the road? How has she not annihilated a car before if she thinks that she has priority over traffic already on the roundabout approaching from her right?
