I'll be riding it home 1x, and will see how it goes, but the big, steep, hill in the middle means I really like the lower range for climbing and then the big ring for keeping up with traffic..
Embrace your inner spinner. Assuming you have a compact, 34x11 is about 84", which any self-respecting trackie would be happy to wind up to 35mph+. Couple of days of that in your legs can't be a bad thing...

Not sure my knees won't explode though.. my normal cadence is about 80rpm...

Is it me or did the BBC not show the podium ceremony of the men's race? WTF! I couldn't believe Valverde (finally) winning it! I was sure he was going to burst into tears!

EDIT: After not seeing it at all in iplayer, I went ahead and set a complaint on their website.

changed the rear brake on the MTB at the weekend; makes such a difference being able to stop...now because it is so good, I'm going to have to change the front.

Oh, didn't stop me from coming off and landing on my wrist, I suspect a visit to A & E might be on the cards later tonight :(
  • Any clues on what a course entails (some barriers and one set of steps?) and how many laps/distance is an hour?!?
If I know you, and I like you, you can borrow my bike box for £30 a week. PM for details.

I think the worst bit about them not showing the podium ceremony was that they went off air early and showed an episode of Flog it!!

I can't hammer in a straight line. I've been trying to change the bearings in a Hope bb and I just can't get them to go in. They always end up at an angle and I have to knock the cartridge out and start again.

I should stop going down Whiteladies road in the morning. Some bellend turned left without indicating as I was next to him. Shouted oy and knocked on the rear window, as I was forced down the side road alongside him. He halted, I went around his front to turn around, and go back to the road. As I was in front he angrily revs and accelerates twice towards me. Not far, but the intent was clear. Then bravely told me not to touch his car and sped off. If you don't want your car damaged, use your mirrors so you don't hit stuff.

Looks like it's the last few commutes by bike for me for a while....
Change in circumstance means I'll need to take the car (time constraint, not distance)...
that'll take a knock on my target mileage for the year! Bum.

Managed to tear my hamstring at the weekend. Quite a lot of pain at the moment and will be off the bike for a few weeks while it recovers.

I can feel myself getting fatter already...

Don't use a hammer; you'll trash the bearings before they're even in. Make yourself a bearing press with a bit of threaded rod and some nuts/washers from Screwfix.

Or pop round and use mine...

My GF keeps injuring herself, as do quite a few of her friends. I'm not implying causation, but there seems to be a strong correlation between injuring bits of your body, and knowing what those bits are called.

I've also observed a strong correlation with stretching, use of foam rollers etc.

I've got one, but I didnt think to use it as I was putting the cartridges into the external cups rather than pressfit cups into a frame.

Hope's tech video specifies a mallet and their holder / drift, which is what I was doing.

Note to self; never follow the instructions.

My problem was caused by playing sport that involved sprinting after a ball while over the age of 40 (and possibly thinking that I didn't need to warm up). I have no one to blame other than myself!

The only ball you should be sprinting after is of the bearing variety when you're doing some routine maintenance and it falls out inexplicably - rolling across the garage floor towards that drain ....

Had some f&*k nugget drive through my arm this morning, which I had out to indicate I was turning right.

Had been out for 4 to 5 seconds, and the driver had been tailgating me for a short while.

Already done, especially as the driver just kept on going.
And their insurance company informed as well.

    What a ****!

Another testimony questioning why our great local (Southampton) police force abandoned Operation Close Pass after literally just a few weeks this time last year, in a city with crazy amounts of car use and a hideous road layout, due to the terrain and how some was re-claimed from the sea.

Lets just say I'm absolutely disgusted with hants police at the moment. I've had 4 close pass submissions rejected, even though a copper who saw the video of one of them, who cycles, said words that rhyme with ducking bell that's close.

Forward them on to the head of the police force - and your local MP - and to the local news papers. Doesn't need to be an emotional rant - just pure fact. Point them towards operation crackdown in Sussex who seem to have a bit less sympathy for motorists who show no regard for cyclists.
Oh - and copy in BC & CTC (what was) contacts

edit again: and if you tweet - tag Chris Boardman in it ...

I don't think the authorities realise just how dangerous the close passes are.

Ive had a few of the near miss hand out signalling ones before, fortunately always spotted it just in time and moved my hand away as I think you could easily end up with broken bone in your hand if you get caught on the wrong angle/speed of the vehicle, though Ive always thought no doubt theyd then complain I was sending confused turning signals.

today I got given a load of abuse because Id filtered a traffic queue, and then taken prime up as soon as the traffic started moving again and the guy immediately behind me, who'd already close passed me once, couldnt then get through as there was no space to overtake and no space to be ahead anyway, and objected to me pointing that out,

and those altercations annoy me because they then make me feel rubbish, even though I dont feel I did anything wrong, and yet some complete stranger is completely comfortable with using their car to intimidate me,feint trying to knock me off my bike, and then sling aload of abuse at me, just because Im "one of those" cyclists as he termed it

Although I'm capable of doing the job myself I haven't got the facilities to do it in my flat so I took my Hope hub to a LBS to replace the bearings after ordering the new bearings with Evans who had a three week waiting list, the smaller shop still had a waiting list but it was much smaller and cause I dropped it in early the job was done early cause of a cancellation. From memory it was £20.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.
  • Rode in stopping every 3 miles because my rear tubeless tyre kept deflating.

Told the LBS NOT to use Gorilla tape as rim tape.

Looks like I am spending lunch time fitting a tube and the weekend retaping the rim (or whatever the technical term is).

Erm, did they use gorilla tape? How have you worked out that it's the tape that's the problem?

All the sealant leaking from the spoke nipples is a bit of a giveaway.

    Ah. Not good then.

Unfortunately my experience with LBSs is that they use what they have rather than what is correct.

When I was starting out I got them to fit some wheels for me, and they used skinny rim tape - too skinny for my rims.

Took me about three punctures to work out what was happening - I think it was gorrila tape that came to the rescue on that occasion, while I waited for the correct tapes to arrive.
