perenial rant I know about shared spaces, but I cant work out if this is just because the pedestrians I encounter only get to see a cyclist once in a blue moon on these shared style paths so they always seem to never expect you to be there, and then when they do clock you are there, massively over panic which generally puts you both in a worse imminent collision situation than if they hadnt noticed you at all. whereas if it was more common to see cyclists all the time, theyd have more experience of whats a good thing to do and whats not.

like you ring your bell in a friendly manner behind them, its not passive aggressive ringing, its just to let them know you are there, because you can see they havent clue that they are on a bike path or that you are approaching, and yet they near always react by then stepping towards you into your path, and you have this near collision where you have to grab a handful of brakes and hope you dont come off, whilst you are thinking ffs I dont want to be another cyclist injures pedestrian story just because they panicked.

There is a reason I'll probably stop using the shared bike path on the way back home after the time change...

To the tosser on a red Btwin and hi-vis yellow back pack this morning on Parliament square. Please don't ride like a cnut and cut me up. Be more careful when you switch from the main lane into the bike lane, at least bloody look first and don't force me to slam on the brakes. Even so, you were inches from taking us both out.

Oh and by the way, red light means stop.

Bloody cycling events being messed up. Keep signing up to things, train for them, get excited about them and then it all blows up.

Right, so I was signed up to do Velo South this weekend (i know, there are a few people against it), and now it's been cancelled due to a sever weather warning, but wanted a go at a closed road event.

Was also signed up to the Santini GFNY Ventoux event earlier in the year, but accommodation fell though.

Signed up to L'etape du tour last year, accommodation also fell through.

The only time I've ever succeeded in the Ride 100 ballot, it pissed it down and became the Ride 84.

I'm beginning to think i should not sign up to any more closed-roads events!

Got myself a new phone this week, nothing special, second hand, but my old phone was battered so was nice to have a new phone.

Got the train into work today as out with the wife later. Barely 5 minutes walk into the journey, drop the phone, crack the screen.

    DOH.

On the plus side, seems a bit easier to replace the screen on this one than my old phone. Have also ordered a better case!

Wettest night since the 'turn' last night, so bang on schedule get a visit. Stayed quite zen getting my bits and pieces together, check tyre for the culprit and replace inner tube. Start pumping, but inner tube won't inflate... Check another spare tube and it pumps up fine.

Replace inner tube again and have the same problem, only then notice the pump is "notchy" and eventually gives up the ghost. Put the call of shame into the wife.

Can't really complain, Topeak pump is coming on 10 years old so assume it's perished inside. But why it had to go in those conditions!!!

Thing that pi$$ed me off, at least 2 cyclists passed without checking if all was well. I always slow and ask if they need a hand and no doubt they'd both be carrying pumps.

Still, must get some co2 thingies as a backup.

I’ve had a truly sh!t couple of weeks, my dad died, my wife broke her ankle and I’ve picked up a stinking cold. Not looking for sympathy, just a bit of context.
Our neighbours are doing a loft extension and I have been chasing to have some things the builders have done put right since July, but have either been ignored or fobbed off. On Thursday I got a message asking if I could talk to them and the builder asap about what needed to be done as the people the other side of them are moving at the end of this month. I replied that I couldn’t see them until next week as I had a few things on, didn’t go into detail but it was family stuff and the funeral was yesterday.
Yesterday I get another message asking if we can meet them in the afternoon as it needs to be done quickly. Considering I started asking about this work so long ago I thought it a bit rich and as I was otherwise engaged I ignored them. My wife sent them a message explaining why we couldn’t see them then.
I just bumped into the other couple they said had a moving date. They don’t have a moving date and haven’t chased for the scaffolding to be taken down, it’s just our neighbours pushing to get things done quickly now it suits them and using the others as an excuse.
They have behaved appallingly throughout this whole process and this latest episode has left me absolutely furious. I don’t think I’m going to be able to be very civil when I talk to them.

The subject has been raised in the 'discuss the website with the team' thread. It has become apparent that there is only 1 mod with 'magical powers' and that is Josh Evans. I think he's over worked. Plus he moderates Cycling news.
That must be an impossible task.

Was wearing dark clothing with 'limited reflective qualities' and had a red rear light which was 'hard to see'.

How many steps do we need to take to not be victim blamed for our own murders?

Still, this does neatly encapsulate why I don't buy dark but reflective clothing. Because someone will say it was your fault you got killed... Never the drivers fault for not looking where he was going.

Whilst I get your point, if you're in an area with no lighting and inadequate lights yourself when riding in the dark, it's hard to see how you could be avoided.

Mike Hall was a cyclist with an enormous amount of experience riding at night and over huge distances, often in the middle of nowhere.

I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt and speculate that his rear light was not that bad, and that his outfit/bike had a decent amount of reflectives on it, which tend to be very visible from a car heading towards you, should the driver care to look.

Instead of being distracted by a truck parked in an unusual place.

You can speculate, but it's really not always the drivers fault and from the reported facts it sounds like the cyclist should have made more of an effort to make himself visible for the conditions he was cycling in. I don't see the article as victim blaming at all. People with experience can behave and act irresponsible too.

Incidentally, since this is the rant thread - how much of a 2018 Twitter-Fauxrage term is "Victim Blaming? Everyone is a fucking victim these days...

Sorry to hear that but that is one of the many reasons I very rarely take part in organised events.

RL100? Ride with 30, 40, 50 thousand others? Sounds shi£e. But, but, closed roads. Nope, still sounds shi£e.

If I want to ride 100 miles I get a mate and we go and ride it.

London to Paris over three days? Nope, get two mates and do it in 24 hours, unsupported.

IMHO it's much easier and more flexible to make your own arrangements. Plus if it's peeing down on the day it's much easier to shift it back a week.

    I appreciate YMMV.

I don't do many, may be one a year. Got back a couple of weeks ago from London to Bruges and back (unsupported), but like the idea of doing a big event for the atmosphere now and again. When i did L'etape, doing a route of the TdF a couple of days before the pros including the iconic Tourmalet, with thousands cheering you on, was great.
