All true, but blaming someone else was quite convenient. Bloody rude of him to change his mind so late as well, even if I am happy not to be going.

Since little lad came along mid 2015 everything else has moved down in priority - I did one TT last year - not planning any this year atm either.
I'm sure I'll get back to doing (more) things just for me soon enough - but for now, it's time with the lad I want - that plus getting rid of this flippin cold - after the last one, and the one before that ... even my Turbo hasn't seen any abuse for a while :(

As it should be. Thing is we have an 18 year old and a 15 year old so we should be able to have more time to ourselves. Problem is the younger one got ill in November 15 and hasn't really recovered, spent a couple of weeks in a dark room not doing anything due to headaches and dizzy spells, it's been gradually improving but still not right and gets knocked backwards every now and then. It was over 6 months before we started getting the right kind of help but things have improved since, just frustratingly slowly. At least we know it's not life threatening. Then my wife found out recently her brother has terminal cancer so is worrying about that as well. She is particularly good at worrying so I try not to add to it if possible.

Same here with my wee girl - sadly I think getting that time comes with all manner of 'germs and nasties' (to quote her ladyship) thrown in for free! Just wait until he goes to nursery.

    Cracking!!!

Wife is pregnant with our first and I'm wrestling with what I can and can't expect when they arrive. Like a kid at xmas I absolutely can't wait, but at the same time realise things will never be the same.

Currently out on the bike most weekends, so plan on setting up the turbo in the garage. Hour on that at most weekends and fingers crossed to see the light of day for 1 ride each month.

Even considering dropping the big miles at the weekend and start doing some local 10's after seeing the local clubs at the weekend. But in all honesty it would probably take up as much of my time as a few hours out in the sticks. Having said that, pointless planning too much as I have no idea what we're in for.

they?! twins?! or just using they because you know the make but not the model ;)

Little_Slowbike is our first - and he's now 21 months old and can be (when he wants to be) a handful.
But - having come at this later in life I've put a lot of things "on hold" ..

    1) I've had a lot of time for me up till now - so it's his turn
    2) time spent with him isn't a chore, don't get me wrong - it's tiring, but it's not a chore
    3) more time spent with him means less time to get the normal jobs done - they are a chore!
    4) We are knackered - so downtime, having caught up with the essentials - is spent recovering ready for the next onslaught.

    My advise (fwiw) is.
Carry on riding as much as you can now - it will keep you fit and tbh, you might as well use what little spare time you have enjoyably.
once "they" come along it will change - by how much depends - for a colleague it looked like he wasn't bothered, no excitement, no rush to get home/stay home - but he's a lot younger. For me, it was life changing (having wanted this for so long) - I don't want to be anywhere else. But I still carried on riding the club 10's and did a few of the social nights (when LSB was alseep anyway). I do a few of the longer rides too, but it's a hard call even now as time with him is so limited.
I've now got a smart turbo set up - so I get the fitness bit without getting too bored ... when I'm not to ill or knackered to use it!

Over4 years on now and my free time is happily owned by the family. Every waking hour of my lad's day I'm on call, apart from the freedom of work. It's my choice though.

I used to do a lot of long distance walking and wildcamping. Always out in the hills on my free time. Now I'm lucky to walk just 3 miles in the hills, which is good going for the lad.

Cycling is an expedition. Panniers full of extra clothes just in case the lad gets cold sat on the child seat or in the trailer. Stops every hour or as long as we can manage before he gets bored which may be a lot less than an hour. Bikes chosen for ability to take a rack and child seat.

Then there's the bugs. My nickname is "the germ" at work. My lad gets everything going and shares it with me. I share it around work. It's the perils of parenthood. Stock up on vitamin c and any other homespun remedy to prevent colds now.

But remember, a smile from your child makes you forget any sacrifices made. Even though as a baby it's probably wind!

just using they because you know the make but not the model ;) - THIS haha

Yeah, I'm just about to turn 33, recently married and have wanted kids for a while so over the moon and can't wait. Because I've had the past 16 years to myself I will also be the first to confess in being a little selfish in my time but I want to be a Dad that doesn't miss much more than can't be avoided (work).

Going out for 3-4 hours each weekend will be knocked on the head, so just assessing my options.

excellent - I hate to see dis-interested parents - although to be fair - they might just be catching up on things whilst their little one is finally occupied!

LSB went cycling right from the start - well, a couple of months in anyway - we'd load his car seat into the trailer (strapped down) and off we'd go - far cry from the runs I was capable of - it was a mile or so to a cafe and off the roads to keep it safer.
He now loves going on the bike seat (hamax) and loves putting his lid on - haven't used the trailer in quite some time, but may get it out again.

It'll be hard - but do drag yourself away from TinyDinyull occaisionally. Hardest one I did was first night away without him - spent it awake in the camper van just before RL100 last year ... although I could see him on the remote access night vision camera! ;)

My advice, prepare NOW for the emergency C-section because if you don't, you may well find yourself sprinting after the bed containing your other half down the hospital corridor to theatre.

My experience was that the consultant said something quietly to the midwife and before he had finished speaking, the anaesthetist was in with a bandolier of drugs, the bed was detached from the machines going ping and gone. Not a word was spoken to me until a student nurse said "go get prepped for theatre".

All this takes place in a ward heated to around 40°C, so dress for that!

Oh and don't offer anything to your OH to hold that you're attached to. Made the error of offering my thumb to a friend's wife (long story, I was temporary stand in birth partner) which she promptly dislocated for me. Rather than go to A&E I borrowed the entonox and popped it back in myself.

All sounds familiar - Madam joined us just over a year ago and its fair to say all work stopped! Garden is just getting straight but still a lot to do. House jobs get done in dribs and drabs.

That said - this should all be in the anti-rants. Little one can be a proper madam when she wants to but she is completely awesome and I wouldn't change a thing apart from wishing we'd had her from younger. C'est la vie..

I echo hopkinb. Look after your health and then you can look after your loved ones properly. I hope your daughter starts on the road to recovery soon!

I've been struggling since November (I won't go into details) so I just stopped cycling and kicked back at any opportunity. The rest has helped and now I'm building back up to full fitness (again, not quite full and I won't go into details), but it definitely helped to not try to push through and ignore the underlying issues...

... smoked my mates (not like that, they're just mates!) in the New Forest at the weekend - think I surprised them with my form (I'll put this in anti-rants).

Bikes picked up a horrific squeal when turning the front wheel of centre.

Stopped, dropped the wheel, cleaned the dropouts, re-seated. No change.
Checked brake pads - all clear, Checked mudguards, all seems ok.
Rode into work with a lot of squeals, not sure where to check next!

    Sheffield Cycles. Again.

I ordered something back in Nov, a week later still hadn't received anything. Spoke to them up a number of times over 3 days, they promised to call back and never did. Eventually get a useful response, they had forgot to post it.

About a month ago started having problems with what I ordered. Emailed them, after a week without a response I had to call them about 10 times over 3 days before finally getting through to them, told me to post it back.

Posted it back last tues, with a note asking them to call me straight away. Have I heard anything back, have I fark. Going to get on the blower (over the next 3 days no doubt) and demand full refund. Can't be chewed having to deal with them anymore.

Commuter had a terrible rattle coming from the left hand shifter, which I thought was coming from a lack of brake cable tension. Played about with the brakes, barrel adjuster and pad alignment with no joy at all.

Lost a screw from the shifter a week prior, so decided to inspect to see if it had gotten lost inside it.

Took the shifter off the bike (binning the brake and gear cable in the process) and started taking the shifter apart to have a look.

Turns out a screw was loose behind the name plate. Was a 2 minute fix which ended up costing me close to 2 hours and having to replace 2 inner cables.

    Joy!

Racing. Bunch of ar5e. Displayed some quality skillz avoiding a chute right in front of me on Saturday, smashing my back wheel up in the process. Now needs three new spokes as horribly bent and a good seeing to on the truing stand. Will need to go into the shop for it too, as I can't true wheels for sh1t. At least I didn't end up with about half the flesh on my face left on the road like one of the poor sods who went down...
