Oh Lunar were briliant, they straightened the hanger no problem and didnt charge me either... the mech is mangled as well. I couldnt justify them charging me £65 for a new mech and fitting though, not when I can get a mech for £25 and do it myself. I get that about LBS shops but when i can get an ultegra mech and fit it myself for half the price i just cant justify it.

Ill buy and fit the parts, as a i need a few other bits, and then drop it back in for a once over.

    But Lunar I couldnt fault.

This is the problem with LBSs; if you are able to do your own maintenance they're basically of no use. For simple stuff like chains and brake pads they have to charge twice as much as the web, so you're paying double to get it a day or two earlier; for anything slightly more obscure they have to order it in anyway, because they can't stock everything, so they end up being both more expensive and less convenient than the web. I can understand why they have to be like that, but as far as I'm concerned it makes them totally redundant.

Last time I went into a bike shop was over a year ago, when I was looking for a piece of hydraulic brake hose and a 386Evo BB tool. In fact I went to 9 bike shops, not one of them had either; none of them could even fit the BB for me as they didn't have the tool in their workshop.

It's a shame, but the "support your LBS" mantra doesn't resonate with me, because the LBS is no more useful to me than Starbucks or Mothercare.

I kind of agree. I am, however, happy to support Lunar because they do things like straighten hangers for free (as per Rob's anecdote) and offer good advice.

I don't have the same approach to Evans, Cycle Surgery etc... they're more like physical internet sites.

That is why i will take it back in once i have sourced and fitted the parts. they can tweak and what not and everyone then wins.

I dont normally rant, thesedays at least, about close passes as they happen far too frequently with twunts in Audis, buses, trucks, skip lorries to be that noteworthy unless they hit you.

but Ill make a special exception for the ambulance, not an emergency one (Im not that vapid) but one of those just does outpatient delivery type ones, who must have been going a fair pace anyway as he wasnt in sight at all (and you can see a good 300metres down the road) when I pulled out on to the main road, yet was breathing down my neck a mere 150metres later as we got to a mini roundabout. I stopped, in prime, to give way to a car going through, and then pulled off but I was slightly slow away as Id not changed down enough gears, and next thing I know the ambulance is now overtaking me by straightlining/going wrong side of the roundabout.,which forced me out of the way as he was getting far too close for my liking, but I also knew he was going to have to cut back in on me to make the exit.

now it might be only a mini roundabout, but theres still a reasonable hump, and of course he hit it at enough speed which totally unsettled the whole vehicle dynamics and he then sort of understeered/washed out right up to the kerb on the exit, which happens to be where the cycle lane on the road is,which kind of shows how badly he got it and how far wide he ended up going, had I stuck to my line he'd have been making an inpatient delivery to casualty.

and as youd expect despite driving like he's some white van man courier driver on a mission, he then hits the traffic queue not more than another 150metres ahead, and I catch him up again...I just stared

  • En route today was leapfrogging another cyclist who made 3 tight passes on slow-moving lorries, one on the inside & 2 on the outside, jumped 2 red lights and took a right turn through the lane for oncoming traffic & round the wrong side of a red light, overtook me really close and twice rode down the right hand side of one way streets. All in the space of a mile. Amazed she is still alive.

Joggers, yes we do have to stop for you at zebra crossings, but if you're running along the pavement and suddenly change direction to use the crossing without looking, without giving any indication whatsoever that you might cross and not pausing, even for a split second, you're not really giving cyclists or drivers a chance in stopping in time.

Why can some people using the self-scan checkouts in supermarkets not work out that you're supposed to put stuff in the bags as you go along. Instead, they form a pile of shopping which they then take an age to decant into bags once they've finished paying. Seriously, how hard can it be?!?

While I'm at it, if you're using the Sainsburys self scan and put your credit card into the machine too early in the payment process, it pops up a message telling you to press the credit card button. You then have to press "OK" to make that message go away, and then press the credit card button to tell the machine you want to use the card it already knows you've inserted. Surely, Sainsburys software developers, if I've stuck my card into the machine, it's reasonable to assume I want to pay with it? Tesco made that assumption, and they still seem to be trading...

What's even more irritating is the earlier versions of the Sainsbury's software didn't do that (it was the same as Tesco) so its been done deliberately for some reason :x .

New tyre needed after a fool pulled out of a junction as I riding across it, we missed each other but the rear tyre is KO'd where I grabbed the brakes to avoid the idiot.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

    Drafting fairies. Please funk off.
Shoulder checked on the way home yesterday to find two of them behind me. Stopped at the next red and wasn't in a hurry to move off when the lights changed - buggers just waited and slotted in behind again. I upped the pace for a mile or so trying to forget they were in tow, shoulder checked again to pass a slower bike & lo and behold they are still there (albeit one was visibly struggling & the other manfully trying to look in no bother at all). Anyway, change of plan needed so I just passed the slower bike and sat up, very obviously (stopped pedalling and pulled left) - got down from 25 to 15mph before one of them twigged and realised they would have to put their nose in the wind. Worth it for the look of disppointment on his face alone. Anyway, slotted in behind about 6 feet adrift for a while then blew past them further down the road - shoulder check confirmed no more DFs. Zen restored.

Bit of a pointless rant here, because something like it happens pretty much every day I ride in London, but tonight was especially frustrating. Did a few cheeky laps of Regents Park after work and, firstly, was almost wiped out by a Jihaddison Lee cab going up Portland Place - pulled out of a parking space without looking, indicating or mirror checking. That was frustrating, but par for the course (if there's anyone on London's roads worse than black cab drivers, it's those fcukers)

More annoying thatn that though was a nodder pulling straight onto the pavement in front of me as I scrubbed off speed going into the SE corner of Regent's Park (the tight corner). She glided to a stop and looked genuinely confused when I pointed out the error in what she'd just done. Add to that the imbecile on a boris bike who later ploughed straight through the red lights outside Tottenham Court Road tube then proceeded to stop almost halfway across the junction when a tipper lorry (with right of way) almost squashed her to a pulp - I think I'm actually starting to hate numbnut cyclists more than I hate numbnut motorists.
