Well on a slight side note, it certainly is fun when you do well with a cheap bike. At my club, you get people turning out with disc wheels, carbon aerobars, aero helmets etc the full works. I'm still at school, couldn't afford anything like that stuff, but on my Scr still place 5th in the time trials. It's way more fun on something cheaper than every else has got, and makes you feel like a better cyclist, which in itself is snobby, but it also boosts your confidence knowing that you are pretty good even without the kit.

i think many are missing the point .....

Since when has it been the case that everyone driving a Ferrari has to be a F1 driver, or someone using a set of Ping golfclubs has to be a single figure handicap golfer or a hundred other similar examples.

In every one of those situations you get the same kind of inverse snobbery from those who can't afford it!

They need to get a life IMHO :D

My lord. I grew up on a golf club and if someone showed up with top of the range kit and an oversized pro bag, and then couldn't hit the golf ball more than a few yards there would be laughter from most people watching. The same as open race days on racing tracks when people show up in their sports cars and pootle around the track. Your reference to F1 cars is also amusing, the sports guy on the BBC news this morning had a shot of a F1 car. He stalled it coming into the pits and everybody looked very amused with much eye rolling.

"inverse snobbery from those who can't afford it!" Could you please post a picture of a bike I couldn't afford? I'd be surprised if you can find one.

If anybody can put their hands on their hearts and admit to not having the slightest bit of snobbery, inverted or not. I'd call them liars.

I don't think I mentioned golf first. But saying that, they aren't all that different. Clubs, club kit, competitions, fun day, charity events etc.

PJH, I'm sorry if you feel that my responses are being aimed at you. I had a quick look through some of you're previous post and bless if you've only spent around £4k in the last 12 months on you're kit!!!

I don't really care what people spend on their cycling equipment. The point I was making was that I'm more inclined to knock a newbie in thousands of pounds worth of kit who wobbles down the road, rather than look down my nose at someone who can only afford a "budget" bike. That's all.

So it's alright to have a go at someone who has an expensive bike / car / golf clubs then?

Does it seem fair your ability to judge people on what kit they have...but only if it's expensive? Or is it a case of sour grapes? It's strange because I never think someone a "tozzer" because he has expensive kit and riding slowly and I'm trying to grasp the concept of why it concerns you so much along with others.

God I wish I could speak slower so people on forums had a chance to perhaps grasp what I'm talking about.

I clearly said "who think they're all that" in my statement about people on £4k bikes. What I'm getting at is if someone is lording it over someone (as in being a d_ck) because they've got a better bike, kit, car, golf clubs, whatever then I just think they should be able to prove themselves. I couldn't give a monkey ar_e what you're on as long as you're a nice decent person. If you're a wa_ker, I'll treat you like one. That goes for everything and everybody in life that I encounter. If anybody can't understand this on here then I don't know what more I can do to explain myself. Sorry.

Maybe it's because you're being a bit arrogant? You're basically saying
"show me anything, and I can guarantee than I can afford it".

snobbery or not, that's just being an arsehole.

See, what I don't get is that I'm not actually personaly attacking anybody on here, but I'm getting what I feel like is unjustified flak. I've been called a plank, now an arsehole and more than once I've been told that I'm jealous because I can't afford something. I'm just being honest about how I see things. It would seem that everybody's allowed opinion as long as there all the same one.

I've noticed that nobody has asked what I ride. I don't ride an expensive bike as I don't think I could justify spending over £2k on a bike.

Bragging about how much money you have, is being arrogant, whatever you do, and however much you own.

I'm not bragging about how much money I have, I'm just saying that I could afford most bikes out there. I don't own a car like most people in the UK so I have "extra" money (you could say).

BTW I earn a fairly average wage. I just took offence at people making out my attitude is due to not being able to afford a £4k bike.

    Will that one do?
Carlsberg don't make cycle clothing, but if they did it would probably still not be as good as Assos

Not at all. I think anything over £1k is expensive for a bike. I'm just saying that fro me personally I couldn't justify spending over £2k for a bike and I ride over 7k miles a year. I remember spending £500 on my a road bike a few years ago and thinking it was the bees knees.

Don't worry, I never took any offence. A lot of bikes are expensive, but not when you compare them to car prices which make my jaw drop!!

Eat My Dust ... I can't help thinking that you're getting what you deserve here a bit.

You're having to work hard now to explain what you meant to say in the first place and my question to you is "Why did you include the term 'fat tw&t on a £4K bike' as that to me (and obviously to others) said quite clearly that in your opinion 'lesser cyclists simply aren't allowed to ride nice bikes'.

I know you've said you didn't mean this - but that's the way I took it.

And finally why should someone have to 'prove themselves' (what you really mean is 'justify') spending a lot of money on a nice bike? It doesn't matter a rats ass what someone else does ... it's simply not your business.

Whether you like someone or not because of their attitude towards you or others is another matter and entirely up to you.

The fun you can have on a bike has absolutely nothing to do with the cost of the bike . I ride bikes for fun .Other people may have other reasons for riding which is fair enough .

And as for that Storck , pros don't ride bikes like that , its 2kg under the weight limit for a start .

Pros, by and large, don't buy their own bikes anyway.
Who'd be able to afford it? Anyone with £10,500 to spend on anything non-essential.
Similarly, who'd be able to afford an Aston Martin, a house in Belgravia, buy a Premier League footy club, blow a shed load of cash on a wedding in the Seychelles.....?
It looks shit-hot, I must say.
If I sold our house and bought a run-down, 2-up, 2-down in Merthyr Tydfyll (For instance), then I've no doubt I could afford to buy one of those for every day of the week.
I'd expect a different paint job for each one, naturally. :D

Well exactly . If you can spend over a million on a house and over 100K on a car whats 10k on a bike ?

Didn't say pros did ride them (on a professional basis)....I was implying that they're in the few percent who could probably afford one!!

One point about not spending the maximum even if one can afford it is that after a certain point one is spending more and more for less and less benefit - deminishing returns. Another is that it may be counterproductive. Race bikes are basically that - for racing, many riders canot handle them and would get a lot more out of something less specialised. The gearing might be more suitable, it may fit better. In my opinion it is far better to get something appropriate which fits and is comfortable than the latest exotica.,and most would go better. In the scheme of things say 4K for a bike is not the same as 100K for a Ferrarri, however both would be wasted on most riders/drivers who might do better spending a lot less. In my book spending a fortune just for the sake of spending money is the sign of an idioit. A fool and his money are soon parted.
