stuff paying for the name I'm not going to pay for that stuff from those names when I know for a bloody fact 3 quid sunglasses do the job just fine....

Do your £3 sunglasses carry the British Standard BS EN 1836:1997, which ensures that the sunglasses offer a safe level of UV protection?

Not the ones I have proberbly not they were from portugal when I was on holiday, but you can get sunglasses for those prices that do have safe level of UV Protection, I know most people like to spend 50+ quid on a pair of sunglasses, but even if I was rich I would not.

I've lurked here for a bit as a guest but this is my first post on this forum,

I purchased some of the specs today and this came with them,

    Aldi.gif

The standard they meet is fine according to The College of Optometrists who, to the question "How can I protect my eyes?"
    say
". . . . Sunglasses provide still better protection, although it is important to check that these are made to meet the British Standard for sunglasses (BS EN 1836:2005): category 2 (20% transmittance) give good protection. Protection against ambient ultraviolet coming from the side or reflected from below is also desirable, and with some modern small sized frames, care must be taken to check that they also protect from above."
    http://www.college-optometrists.org/index.aspx/pcms/site.Public_Related_Links.Eye_Health_Issues.UV_and_the_Eye/
The darkest Lenses these came with are Cat 3 with a light transmission of 8%min-18%max.

Hope that clears up any safety concerns.

Well, I got three pairs of bib shorts, one shirt, two computers and a water bottle :D

I looked at the jackets but wasn't too sure about the zip, besides I got two last year and they are still as new.

I would have liked a gillet but I'm too fat at the moment  - I'm going on a diet as from today  and also hoping to do 20 miles cycling everyday.

What is the stuff like? is it worth buying?
  • i'm quite envious now... i live far from an aldi and can't seem to find the time to go there. really want some sporty sunglasses (aviator sunglasses don't suit cycling) and maybe the saddle. and i just bought a tool kit from lidl which is fine but the aldi one (exact same price i think) looks to have a better connection system to under the seat and looks better quality.
In the valley of high oil prices the cyclist is king!

Bought the bib shorts because I wanted to try a cheap pair to see what they were like to wear, 2 shirts, a gillet and a computer. Didn't bother with the glasses as I had a pair from LIdl's recently and have been great. All the stuff I bought looked fine and I am not kidding myself that its as good as Assos but for the money I'm happy.
  • Last night I rode for an hour or so in my new all-Aldi get-up -- Aldi shorts, shirt, jacket, etc. I had two Aldi aluminium water bottles on my bike ( in place of the plastic Halfords ones :) )

    It was fine.

It's just a shame the Aldi kit doesn't have `Aldi' emblazoned on it in big letters to make a bolder statement.

I would have bought the sunglasses too, but I couldn't get them on over my specs. But I bought some for my kids.

My only slight whinge is that their shorts are a bit on the thin side, and after the ride I did look as if was naked from the waist down, but had had my nether regions sprayed with black paint. I don't get the effect so much with my more expensive shorts.

Sorry guys but anything you buy from Aldi will make your sweat, or it will fall apart. You get what you pay for.

That is not our experience. Several of our members have Craven clothing from ALDI with no complaints, personally, I have been using it for several years and have ridden 70+ miles in a day. This guy is just a rubbisher.

    ^^ Agreed...

My Aldi winter kit ( jacket/gloves ) has survived the entire winter, used daily, washed daily and is still like new.

I just went out this morning and bought a computer to replace an old sigma (great news it just fits on the sigma mount) bib shorts, shirt and jacket.

It is all far better value than anything you will buy in a LBS let alone "designer cyclin gear"

Computer is a bit complicated though!

just got a pair of bib shorts and socks, along with a sandwich (only 99p, and tasted the same as the £2.30 I usually buy from the sandwich van that comes to work!).

Would've bought the sunglasses but I wasn't sure of the BS comliance... should've looked on here before I went then I would've had a pair buy now

Just got back from Aldi with shorts, gloves, socks and sunglasses - very impressed for the price, just tried it all on, very comfortable. The glasses are an unreal steal, especially with 3 interchangable lenses and case.

Yeah padding is a bit weird but sure I will get used to them.

Think the Jacket is sound for £9.99

Jacket and track pump. Jacket fits perfectly but had to exchange the pump, as it was leaking air from around the gauge. But guess what, so did the one I paid £20 for from an lbs last year. Aldi swapped it straight over and it works great. Tyres up to 120psi in no time. Guess I should really look at what rating they are now. :D

Yes, the glasses this year don't seem to be as good as last year.

Last year they had more cycling gear and I think the quality was better than this year.

The padding in the bib shorts is too far to the back but when one is on the bike it's fine, at least I did not notice any difference with my other shorts.

Today I went back and got another water bottle, globes, padded underwear and the last short they had :D

Reading the posts on here leads me to the conclusion that although cyclists are renowned for being tight, they have allowed themselves to be conditioned by media hype and advertising. It's no wonder the majority of people are in debt (especially the guy up the road with the big house, flashy car and expensive life style), but what is his balance sheet like (probably £100K's in debt to the bank). The British don't know a bargain when they see it. It's the same with computers and software, they pay out £100's for operating systems and software when it is available for free, and you don't have to register it either.

I agree about the padding. I was trying to figure out why the Aldi shorts give me a spray-painted-goolies appearance, and I think that's why. My other shorts have more padding in that general area.

On the bike, I find that the padding is pretty much in exactly the right place. But off the bike -- yeuch. :)

Still plenty of stuff left at the Selby store.

Bought a couple of the Aldi computers. They both seem to have the same problem. The only option for the first digit is 1 or 2 but the bigger problem is that the second digit will not change from 9 and the next two digits jump digits as you scroll though. As a result I can't select the correct wheel size. Both are doing the same.

Any tips before I take them back?

    Thanks

I was trying to set 1286 I think and I encountered the same problem. I could not set the second digit.... I set it KM and that took care of the problem.

RE. the computer, if you set the wheel size using the kmh scale but then set the visual readout to mph it works ok. Went out this morning with my son and our computers were less than 0.5mph out.

I set mine to 2160 without any problem, or thinking beyond reading the instructions. I cant offer any tips only encouragement. Mine worked.

We've got a couple of pairs of glasses, which we're really pleased with, under shorts (and yes, the padding is a bit far back, but it does the job), socks, and I got my partner a short sleeved top and a gilet. Since it was a choice of pink or pink for the girls, I thought matching bikes (which we already have) and matching clothing would be a bit much.
