1. freeride.dirt jump, XC, road (if that counts riding to friends house on the identiti)
2. identiti dr jekyll and trek 4900 alpha
3. i ride whenever i have free time so during the hols most days
4. ive had some big crashes but havnt hurt myself other than scratches and bruises in any of them. i hurt my shins and my knees alot
5. i bought both my bikes ready built but am frequently changing parts and fixing parts. i even fitted a new headset using a hammer, a screwdriver and a bit of wood. from all the upgrade parts from my friends old bike i have made an entire bike from random parts found strewn across his garage. including bottom bracket headset forks etc
6. worked in a bike shop on work experience and the manager said they could take me on part time but go to boarding school so am never there so couldnt accept.0 -
i'm totally with you on that, maybe being a real biker is not moaning that what you got aint good enough and making the most of what you have and just enjoying it.
and some people are just stoopid. they come in and think they are right and you know they aren't but you just can't tell them. i'm usually like yeaa whatever and let them believe it. it is good when you correct a know-it-all with a hard fact and they can't argue.0 -

Look at where it started, Gary Fisher and co rode bikes fast off road - that's it. The rest is at least 50% hype.
We are cyclists first and consumers second - don't get it the wrong way around!
spliting it in to catogories is forming different sports, down hill, freeride(shore and slopestyle), trail(all mountain), and cross counrty are all mountain biking, and all very different. they are different styles and require a different rig, unless you want a real hard job of it. so mountain biking isn't reallt the sport anymore, it's more of a sort of genre, like winter, or water sports. after all, winter sports are done in winter, water sports have to use water, and mountain biking uses a mountain and a bike. the type of mountain biking is your choice.
it's nothing to do with hype. they just make different bikes for people who want to do different things. the original mountain bikes were downhill bikes. nothing to do with riding up or style or anything else in the modern sport. the sport has evolved and no doubt it will continue to.
i do agree that wea re cyclists first though!0 -

yes the heaset was removed with the screwdriver being careful to hit it out evenly so moving the screwdriver around and hitting differnt positions. the new one was then hammered in using a block of wood using the same method! went in very easy!0 -

#1you must ride more than 2 styles, ie dh, trails, dirt jump, freeride park, street, road etc.
#2you must own 2 or more bikes
#3you must ride at least twice a week
#4you must have had a big crash
#5you definatly must be able to change a tube/fix a puncture and change the brake pads on the bikes you own and you must be capable of doing a basic clean/service.
#6you get a bonus point for working in a bike shop, or something bike related.
1. Does BMX count? well. BMX (HARO), Road (Cannondale), XC(mantra)
2. Road (Cannondale), XC(mantra)
3. Every possible minute
4. does a chainring-kiss count? when cassette hub snapped nd cracked my goolies into my square stem.
5. i know how to but havnt had to do it yet. nd i no how to service and clean a bike
6. does halfords work experience count?0 -
This thread sucks.
Firstly because the criteria for being a 'real' biker are stupid.
I ride my bike every day, i own 2 bikes, i ride every discepline there is, i crash often, and i work in a bike shop. But there's people that do that and have no interest or motivation at all to ride. And there's kids at school who own Saracen's and spend every summer night riding till they can't anymore. There's guys that would never set foot in a shop that work 3 jobs over winter so they can take their beat-up bike out to Whistler for a whole season in summer.
It's attitude, not what you own or ride.
Secondly because the 'real' bikers are out on the trails shredding, not sat on the internet making up surveys.0 -
I agree Jon.
It's how dedicated the individual is and not how well they fit into 'a gang' and it's certainly not about the bike.'Happiness serves hardly any other purpose than to make unhappiness possible' Marcel Proust.0 -

wwjjitt - I think 'you' need to chill! Don't let the guilt get to you and put it down to experience. If it really worries you, why are you still reading this thread? Go and ride your bike instead, you'll feel much better. Besides, nobody is 'really' upset, see it as healthy disagreement.'Happiness serves hardly any other purpose than to make unhappiness possible' Marcel Proust.0

geez there are far to many serious people on here. if i don't like the thread i don't reply. it's that simple. i'm glad to see still we have some light hearted people on here. anyway here's mine.
1. i ride any which way my bike takes me. be it street/park/uphill/downhill, road however just bores me. (oops i shouldn't of said that it might upset someone).
2. meta 5 custom,stp custom,revolution courier,a marin and a spesh frame
3. ride everyday to work and ride on most days i get off. which is twice a week
4. plenty of crashes, everyone does don't they?
5. i should hope i could fix one or i would be in real trouble.
6. full marks for me sunny. i work at a bike shop have done for 5 or 6yrs
p.s do i get an extra bonus for leaving my well paid job for a shit paid one bacause i loved the job and enjoyed the people and the banter plus being able to travel to trade shows and being part of something i truelly love.internet (in ter net), secret sanctuary of idiots and nutters.0 -
hmmm.... i think i will be a moron and reply, am i a moron for looking at this thread, or is it the people that say we are morons the actual morons and what is a moron?
anyway...
1. I ride street, dirt (when i can), bmx, park, freeride, xc, downhill.
So do i get a point?
2. I own 3 bikes, could own 4 if i could be assed buying bits n building it up. I have a all mountian hardtial, a 24" street bike, a bmx, and a collection of random parts that i should relaly sort out one day.
So do i get a point?
3. I ride when i can, ride street at least 3 times a week, try n get off road at least once a week cause i have to save a day off to spend time with the mrs.. but wow sometimes i even ride off road on both my days off.
So do i get a point, and a bonus for having a life outside of bikes?
4. I have had a few amazing crashes.... enough said.
So another point schweeeeet
5. I think if you can't do the listed bike maintence to earn this point you should never own a bike, come on it is basic stuff, what did ya dad teach ya when you were a kid or your mum to be p.c. it is quite funny that people can't fix a punture.
So that must be a point and a bonus for being ace.
6.I do indeed work in a bike shop. I don't work with any "pro" riders but man I work with this dude called Russ oooooooohhhh!! Oh and some top blokes that ride for banter and fun, wow! Thats right folks they ride for fun....
So.... i have won, yass min! I am a winner, go me!!!
What do i win?, i reckon i should get a cool hat that says "I am a MORON, in case of emergency slap heeeeed!" schweeet!0
