i was talking to a mate the other day and we decided that to be a 'real' mountain biker you must have to equate to the following;

#1you must ride more than 2 styles, ie dh, trails, dirt jump, freeride park, street, road etc.
#2you must own 2 or more bikes
#3you must ride at least twice a week
#4you must have had a big crash
#5you definatly must be able to change a tube/fix a puncture and change the brake pads on the bikes you own and you must be capable of doing a basic clean/service.
#6you get a bonus point for working in a bike shop, or something bike related.

so lets hear from you real bikers..... answer like this-

1. DH, dirt jump, trails, street, freeride park.
2. kona stinky and stuff. both custom built.
3. i ride about 5 or 6 times a week.
4. many. at cwmcarn.
5. i can do all as i work in a bik e shopp and i'm training for cytech.
6. i work in a shop as above

ergo- i'm a real biker.
lets hear from you guys. on and don't take this seriously please! it's just for fun!

IME, the two are quite mutually exclusive. Unless you count commuting...

    1. Dh, Freeride, Dirtjumps, Street.
    2. Norco Team Race, Tonic Fab Fall Guy.
    3. I ride around 3/4 times a week, getting out a lot more now.
    4. I've been lucky as far as injuries go, but I do often spill in a big way.
    5. I built both my bikes from the frame up, and I can fix/replace (almost) anything that breaks.
    6. I have a DH/FR area and Dirtjumps in my garden

    #1 Yes DH & XC/Trails
#2 Yes Norco A-line and Spesh Endruo Expert
#3 Yes Usually Saturday & Sunday Sometimes in the evenings if it's nice out
#4 Depends what you mean by big. I've brusied a few ribs and broken a toe and some little bones in my feet. Had an off at Cwmcarn DH the other week and ended up in a tree.
#5 Of course, can you really see anyone going to their LBS for have a flat fixed?
#6 No bouns pionts for me.

So I guess I'm a "real" MTB'er then? I wonder why I fit to profile of a Trail Yuppie so much?

I don't think you need two bikes to be a 'real' rider.
Surely a 'real' MTBer would only need the one bike? Plenty of riding skills compensates for not having a specific bike?

A 'Real' Rider would have an appropriate bike. Not like the berks you see around on stinkys who can't ride for shit.

Doesn't the first sentence vindicate the people in the last?

If the better riders are those without the specific bikes, by that reckoning the riders with the specific bikes must automatically be the worse riders.

look if you wanna play our "childish game" (it's no different from which car do you drive or where do you ride) then do if you don't then leave the forum.

i know you don't need to have 2 bikes to be a propper rider- it's just done as a questionare thing. so again, all you people who are getting offended cause you consider yourself a proper rider and don't meet the 5 things above, CHILL OUT you are propper riders... ok! don't worry you are loved!

Not really. If someone does a bit of everything, then they would have an all-mountain bike.
If they do mainly BIG drops, downhill, and a little XC, then get a freeride rig.
If they do mostly XC, don't bother with a full DH rig.
    It's not complicated.
Figure out what you do, and you only need one bike.

If however, you want to pose, like a tart, like an MTB version of Paris Hilton or something, then by all means, buy a bike for each occasion, or ride XC trail centres on something stupid like a Santa Cruz V-10, or a Stinky deluxe, etc etc - because that proves you've got money (or a massive overdraft/standing order bill) and makes you better.
If you're a 'biker' you'd have understood what bike would suit ALL your needs, and not listened to the salesman trying to sell you several uneccesarry things!

Hell, I remember when you used to get people doing trials on XC hardtails, and full-bouncers in car parks whilst waiting for their mates.
None of this "ooh, I can't do that today 'cause I'm riding my wrong bike'
They did it because they only had the ONE bike, and they knew how to handle it.

all your needs? so your saying i can do street, dirt jump trails and dh racing on one bike? well i can yea but your better of having the right tool for the job?

i used to do everything on a fully rigid marin 17". i did trials, xc, commuting, dh, and small jumps. those were the days.

Lighten up guys, it's only a bit fun.
    Anyway, here's my answers -

#1 Toughy for me. Mainly XC, but with the odd bit of DH, Shore, Jumping and general a**ing about.
#2 Define BIke! Currently got the old trusty rockhopper built up, but have a shiny new AS-X waiting to get built up, aswell as a new Absolut Al.
#3 At least one ride every weekend, with general mucking about/proper rides depending on shifts/weather/motivation
#4 How big is big? Been of the bike due to damaged knee for a good few weeks a couple years ago, twisted my foot and couldn't ride for a few weeks last year, and knacked my thumb this year.
#5 There is nothing I have not done to my bike! Build them up myself, even been known to machine the odd part, and have a wide array of tools to bodge things with
#6. Never worked in the bike trade. Does being a regular Glentress Trailfairy count?

Well yeah, a hardcore hartail would do al those things.

I've just realised the fatal flaw in all this though. I think we've both got it wrong.

In order to be a 'real' biker, he/she should...
    Have a physical presence
Be visible to more than one person
Be audible to more than one person
not be the result of 'experiments' with shrooms back in the day
Not be a cause for concern to psychiatrists (spelling?!?)
Not be a likely reason to be incarcerated in the near future
Not be a figment of anyone's imagination
  • 1-Fuck off, we can't all afford more than one bike.
2-As for more than one discipline, go away. I ride general all mountain/XC
    3-yes
4-meh, lots of not so big ones.
    5-yes

Or proves that you can only afford the one bike, not one for each style of riding you do, which would clearly be the better position to be in if you did ride XC and DH.

    Aaaanyaway:

#1 I ride XC and try my hand at DH
    #2 I have six
    #3 I commute regularly.....
#4 I've not had any really big crashes. Nothing a trip to A+E doesn't fix
    #5 I do that for a living.
#6 I work in a bike shop. Hence the too many bikes and not much riding.

Oh god no, now we're entering into metaphysics!
If you're not real but imagine that you are does that make someone real?
Or if you're real but imagine that you're not, what does that make you?

If you're sat opposite me at a table after a ride, eating cake, and that cake is genuinely being eaten, as can be verified by others sitting nearby, then i would say you're real.
Unless of course, everyone is having a mass hallucination.

But then of course, mass hallucination is more to do with a fat person believing they're thin, or a thin person believing they're too fat.
    Or a ton imagining it's a tonne. :?

If you've never sat opposite me eating cake, then I don't believe in you. I don't believe in what I can't see. Like electricity!

    Hmm, this is getting unreal.

    Your mate's an idiot.

A true rider is someone who just loves getting out on his bike no matter for how long, or what's happenning, and finishes off with a smile on their face.

I don't ride twice a week, hell I wish I had the time/my knee would stand it, and I don't have 2 bikes, haven't worked in a bike shop, am a pretty gash mechanic but I'd still class myself as a "true rider"
  • If however, you want to pose, like a tart, like an MTB version of Paris Hilton or something...

#1 yes, i jump, like to dabble in dh, xc street etc...
    #2 no, i cant afford 2 bikes
#3 mostly i can get out, but work and uni can be very restrictive
#4 definately had one, never broken a bone though, just had some major skin scarrage
#5 can fix anything/replace anything, apart from shocks and forks.
    #6 no

Because i dont always ride twice a week and have only the one bike, this means that im not a proper rider.

    woe is me..

albeit, i'd probably be able to smoke most of youz.
