As Andrew(afx)said it was colom who went down with Vinokourov and 6 of his team mates came back for him.Leaving Kloden(who had crashed earlier),Savoldelli, and Kashechkin in the bunch.
It seemed like a motorbike was involved in the crash

Did CSC start pushing it when Vino crashed? Bad form if they did.....

They must have made a mistake then cos they had time gaps back to kloden and vinokourov during their feed! They also said that Kash was the only Astana left in the bunch.

    Yeah, Cyclingnews made a mistake.

And I thought it looked like CSC did push on a bit and why not? Armstrong did it to Mayo and Zulle before that.

You can't wait for everyone, and it's not like he's wearing yellow.

I thought Rabobank did as much as any team in forcing the pace, and indeed why not, although if it was a motorbike that brought Vino down then maybe not.But what a days racing,no doubt vino will go ballistic now.

and it was before the final climb, where they couldn't afford to hold back, in case Gilbert and Chavanel were able to take the leader's jersey from Cancellara, or if other riders attack and make it all so difficult to control thereafter.

I never liked the way Lance attacked Zulle after he fell in 1999 but Mayo was fair game as the race was in full swing by then to be first to the cobbles.
I watched the highlights tonight - I guess CSC could claim they were protecting the yellow. Fair enough if that was the case, but I'm gutted for Vino.
    He'll be back, though.
  • What happened tp Cav?? he's way off the GC, so must have been nowhere in the final sprint. I smiled at Millars comment that Cav and Thomas willl have found out what the tour is really like today...both are now well down the GC! Impressed with Millar, he is putting himself about a bit despite a below expectation prologue.

I'm banking on Cavendish taking today as a rest day...Good to see my PTP pick Kirchen up there.

I'd have thought 1:20 mins is not too much for Vino to catch up with all the big hills still to come.

Can't believe no-ones mentioned pipo pozzato. Liquigas are on the front driving for him I expect. This stage is made for him...

well done skut, great pick for today's stage :D

If only all the riders would post on cyclingnews when they were going to win!!! I'll have to start picking on the day of the stage.

What's the problem with CSC pushing the pace?

As CLM says you can't wait for everyone. Also, I sometimes think that you make your own luck to a certain extent when it comes to crashing.

Well David Millar has said he will definitely win a stage - so just keep picking him

With the CSC pushing the pace when Vino went down thing. If you want to do the gentlemanly thing, where do you draw the line? Stop racing every time someone crashes? Or just the contenders? So who's a contender? Wait for Vino and Valverde, but not Moreau and Popovych? That's hardly fair. I say unless a big group goes down keep going as usual, it's the riders job to keep out of trouble - that's why they try and ride up the front.
