I reserve the right to wear a hi-viz vest and plastic hat (which I do) and look a tosser.

It's hip to be square, doncha know.

I'm afraid your analogy doesn't stack up. If young black men are stopped by the police just because the police feel they are statistically more likely to be involved in <i>'petty and violent street crime</i> they have a right to feel aggrieved. If cyclists are stopped just because the police feel they are more likely to commit offences such as jumping red lights, then they have a right to feel aggrieved. But that would mean the simple minded dinosaurs would be the ones being persecuted, wouldn't it? Not the ones that actually jump the red lights.

If someone is caught in the act of breaking the law, whether it's assault, petty crime or a traffic offence on a bike and get done for it, they can hardly claim to be persecuted. It's nonsense.

Dinosaus dominated the earth for 60 million years. The human race has been around for about 1 million, do you think that we'll last another 59?

No. We are 100,000 years overdue for a global extinction event.

I actually had a row with a copper on the 1997 London-Cambridge bike ride.

He said I was going to RLJ just because of the fact that I was going up to a red light pretty fast.

I was going to stop but he didn't believe me on the basis that other cyclists had done it on that ride.[v]

A couple of weeks ago I was stopped by a cop at the lights.

"Didn't you see the signal?" he asked.

    "Yes, it's green."

It turns out that he was signalling me to stop, at least he reckoned he was. But, he didn't look much like a cop (no helmet or cap, no yellow POLICE waistcoat) and he wasn't giving anything like a recognizable signal either; unless it was one instructing a dog to sit. I didn't tell him this, just stopped and waited until he gave another signal which could have meant "Here boy" to his imaginary dog, but everyone took to mean that we could go again.

I drive (family in the sticks, heavy shopping etc etc) as well as cycle. I can honestly say I've never once given a crap about cyclists jumping red lights and I seriously doubt anything other than a tiny minority of motorists do.
    It's just so staggeringly unimportant.

Sorry but I did.I got injured in both the 1991 collision and the 2006 collision.I didnt think 2 collisions in 31 years of cycling was too bad.

I try to ride responsibly out there following all the rules then I get this.

p.s. I think your cycling is just fine Hackers. It might not be perfect, but then no-one's cycling is, and yours is a very long way from atrocious.

Thanks for your support Mikey I appreciate it at a time like this.

I have been looking at my cycling and have been listening to what you have said.Im not always confident enough to take up a primary position believe it or not.I realised I was doing wrong at the mini-rounderbout and changed it and it isn't as bad as I thought it would be.I always lookm out for pedestrains as I don't particulary want to collide with them again obviously.

I drive (family in the sticks, heavy shopping etc etc) as well as cycle. I can honestly say I've never once given a crap about cyclists jumping red lights and I seriously doubt anything other than a tiny minority of motorists do.
    It's just so staggeringly unimportant.

    Well said Nils!
I too drive as well as cycle and it has never bothered me either. I'm also old enough to remember a time when cyclists didn't do it, when there were far fewer motorists who also behaved better generally...

People are so entrenched in their views, I agree with the person who said admin should ban the debate.

Crikey Dom, that's a bit OTT. I think you should apologise to Hackers.

Our local primary doesn't have a cycle rack, and on't install one because the 'roads are too dangerous' they tell me. Well, manage to cycle them ok, and they're only considered dangerous becuase of all the tw4tty mums that are too bone idle lazy and fat round the arruss to walk it.

Any way, back to topic - moan, slag, bitch, you're all worng, bleat, whittle.....
