10 coppers in Shepherds Bush (west of the Green) standing around 3 bikes/riders. I'm guessing they're busting RLJers?

A third as many traffic cops as five years ago.

A million uninsured cars in the UK.

25% of car accidents in Hackney are hit-and-runs.

So let's clampdown on cyclists.

Shame they're not ticketing all the delivery trucks that park in the cycle lane around the top of the green every single day.

The traffic around there is really bad at the moment, because of the roadworks, that the lights aren't really having much effect on the traffic anyway - its a bit of a free for all.

Also ticketing RLJ's (if that's whats going on) at those lights on the northwest corner is a bit dumb as if you want to avoid the traffic, you have to cut through them onto the ped crossing to get onto the cycle path through the middle of the green. This is due to the councils ingenious design.

More drivers vote

Drivers don't like cyclists

Clamp down on cyclists make motorists feel happy

Happy motorists vote for same pollies again

It wasn't at the green, it was further west along Uxbridge at a T-junction.

I saw them too. There must have been 6 or 7 of them. All lined up against a shop window...I got them impression they were trying to hide and wait for RLJers. As I was a good GLer shouldn't they have given me a lollipop or at least applause?

It's great being part of a minority group being actively persecuted by the metropolitan police innit!

What a shame we can't call them institutionally cyclist!

What is the problem here?

If you are following the road rules you shouldn't have a problem?

• I can't understand the problem.

A simple question (and I don't mean to stir the debate) is RLJ'ing against the law or not? Whether there are or aren't other issues for the police to be targeting is not really the question. They are there. RLJing is illegal. It is legitimate to punish offenders. You know the rules, you have the choice.

I didn't get busted. I'm not complaining.
RLJing has a small risk of a fine. Deal with it if you run reds or have the laws changed.

You guys (Hackbike, DontDare etc.) probably think the same when you hear how over-represented young black men are in the police stats, i.e. if they didn't go round stabbing each other and committing petty and violent street crime then they would not be getting themselves arrested. While being ultimately true, it hides the underlying institutionalised prejudice that is revealed by the stats.

One thing that I can say for a fact is that you lot are simple minded dinosaurs from a forgotten era who should wake up (Once you've stopped mourning Bernard Mannings death).

• That's an interesting leap. From many perspectives.

Personally, I wouldn't equate institutionalised racial prejudice with clamping down on cyclists disobeying traffic lights. Now if you said more black and Asian cyclists where being done, I might have gone along with you.

As firsthippy says, if you don't like the rules then get them changed. But claiming persecution doesn't work for me.

Oh, and did you hear the one about the Pakistani, the Scott and the Frenchman in a pub in Moss Side? What a fine example of an integrated community.

wtf[?]

Does that mean I should start jumping red lights even though cops see it as wrong enough to fine cyclists?

Of course im a dinosaur I dont jump red lights and have been cycling to work for twenty five years plus.
It's a new era now.Where does it stop with the lawbreaking?
Red lights today then what next?

Motorists get persecuted too. Also motorists break the road rules as well. Also they moan like ****.

Taking into account the facts in Rothbooks post on page 1 and the police being out in force somewhere new in London almost every day 'Cracking down on rogue cyclists' who, let's face it do fuck all harm to anyone I think I have more than enough grounds to feel part of a persecuted minority group. If you can't see it, or don't experience any prejudice from anyone just for enjoying riding a bike then good for you, count yourself one of the lucky few.

If you do experience it, yet cannot fathom the relationship between racial prejudice and other types of prejudice, no offence but you have reading to do.

Are they there 24/7 365 days a year ? No

Police have a duty to enforce all laws and punish those who break them. Obviously there are priorities, otherwise people would moan if they spent all their time on violent crimes and none at all on burlaries. Obviously they spend probably more on violent crime as that's more serious and of course a lot of people think more time should be spent as well on burglary but it's like the NHS. You can't cure all the people all the time. It's a fixed resource and it has to be split us as the Chief constable or whoever makes these sort of decsions sees fit.

As far as I'm concerned, if I break any law, however trivial and get away with it then I should think myself lucky. Maybe there's a bank robbers forum somewhere where they are posting about being victimised whilst other people are out committing terrorist offences.

Love this.
• Perhaps the clue is in the word 'rogue' - cracking down on "rogue" cyclists. It is not persecution to be fined for disobeying the law. I do not experience prejudice (as you define it) simply because I obey the law. I suspect your argument is about targeting as you do not deny the illegality of RLJing or the right of the police to fine offenders.

Everybody feels persecuted. Drivers would claim that they are persecuted with speed cameras and punitative fines for using mobile 'phones. Some say that white, married, gainfully employed middle-class property owners are persecuted the most.
I mentioned that in Hackney there was (probably still is) only a 10% chance of a driver involved in a road accident to have insurance. Why do you think the police don't act? It's not because they're all out persecuting cyclists.
I don't get the link between obeying sensible laws and Bernard Manning. Must be because I'm a simple-minded dinosaur.

Actually, no.
One of the main arguments for jumping red lights used here is that it's safer. Would you jump the lights if it made no difference safety-wise?
