If you want quality of life you have to get out of south east England, the further the better... London is a true s. h. i. t. h. o. l. e, which is why there are so many white settlers moving to Scotland...**************
Best advice I ever got was "better get a bike then"

People go to Auld Reekie for the ghost tours. I hear you're the main attraction.
Still... nice to know that no matter how ugly you are, you can still find gainful employment.

I cycle in london and (rural) West Yorkshire.
London - advantages
- Traffic is generally bike aware
- Lots of cyclists who are usually friendly.
- its a sight faster than by car.
- There is some good cycling over in the North Downs and Richmond park is better than nothing for a quick blast
Disadvantages
- There is just sooo much traffic
- Given that, there are still a great number of motoring maniacs and aggravation
- Its a trek to get anywhere where it's good low traffic riding (and get up early!).
- A bit limited on real hills (although there is some reasonable climbing in the Downs but nothing really sustained).
- In a rural area the world really is your oyster for cycling.
I still enjoy riding London, but i know where I'd prefer to be...0 -
Just get it london jobbies: once your out you realise its SIMPLY BETTER ! All it is is pretentious mayhem......

I remember when London was a nice place to live many years ago.
One reason why I rarely use the tube now.

Hevipedal, I'm Scottish, and you have hit the nail on the head with that one. People ask why I like it so much down here, and one of the main reasons is the weather. My brother and some of my friends that I grew up with live down here as well, and we all agree that the Scottish weather is the reason we wouldn't move back to Scotand........oh, and the Glaswegians!!!!!![;)]

What chip? In my experience many southerners do not have as good a knowledge of the north as northerners do of the south. I think London is an interesting place to visit, but why anyone would want to live there beats me. I'm grateful that so many people cram themselves into the south east, most of them doing mundane jobs for fairly normal wages that could be done anywhere in the UK. They make the country less crowded for the rest of us. I cycle nine miles home after work and the countryside is on my doorstep for evening rides. When I lived in London I cycled 8 miles home and was then surrounded by drab, dull, suburban, built up areas for miles around. No thanks.0 -

Nice to see people leaping to London's defence here. Personally I couldn't see myself living anywhere else. I can understand people's aversions, and many of the criticisms are fairly valid (house prices etc). But if you don't like it, don't pan it and tell all Londoners that they're wong - just avoid it.

People live in London because it's very convenient, and there's lots going on, and because they presumably get a feeling that it's "where it's at". But the argument is with the fact that they also try to pretend it's a 'nice' place to live. It isn't.0 -

The workforce of London subsidises the rest of the country. If all the money generated by London was spent there it would be an amazing place, but sadly the rest of this fine land needs to be looked after.
Personally I'm not a huge fan of cycling in London, and my commuting efforts are limited in such a way as to prevent me from hating it (as happened back when I was doing 5 days a week).

Cobblers. The only reason people are poorer in London for the equivalent amount of work is that the house prices and generally prices of most things are more expensive, because lots of people want to live there. Not because they 'subsidise' everyone else!0 -

Have to disagree with you there Jock. Scotland is largely a cesspit - a miserable, low-achieving, small-minded ****eheap at that. The remaining population are a grim bunch of self-important whingers who can't see or develop the wealth of potential right in front of their eyes, so **** them. The worst Scottish estates don't even belong in the UK - they are positively third world in comparison to most of Western Europe. But hey, you've voted yourselves your own Parliament full of failed politicians, eager to pish away taxpayers money on joke programmes.
The brightest and best get out as soon as they can. I wish it wasn't that way but that's reality. I'm not coming back nor are any of the friends I grew up with. We all moved to England as soon as we could and most of us have ended up in London. It's not fantastic, but it's infinitely superior to being stuck in Wee Scotland.Hemingway Soapbags0 -
I am from out in the wilds of the UK... where men have ventured and never been seen again... WIGAN! When George Orwell come to visit... he caught his death!
But I was in London a few months ago and was sat outside of my hotel in Southhamton Row... enjoying a Budweiser. I have to say I was part horrified, part in awe of some of the cyclist who rode past. I do not thnk I would last 5 minutes commuting through London, it takes a special kind of madness.. or bravery as far as this hick is concerned.0 -
hey bretty77 - keep the location quiet, I live about half a mile from you! Remember "it's a poophole, no-one would ant to come here" We don't want our nice bit of London overridden by angry northeners (I used to be one, then I moved.. - came here for "2 years max, then going back up north" - that was in '93!)

Salford Lads Club is in Salford, not Manchester. The clue is in the name.

Easy to knock London, but have you been to these "great" places up North. Manchester, Birmingham ... Leeds!!!. GRIM my friends, GRIM. No matter how much they spend on them, they'll never be nice places.

York is the only northern place I like, but too many American tourists.
If it wasn't for hangovers, I'd ride everyday.

Either you haven't been here (I live in York half the time) for a long while, or 2 U.S. American tourist is too many for you.
They're pretty rare in York - I can't believe they wouldn't be noticeable if they were here in numbers.
I haven't been back to London (I lived there for a decade or so) for 3 years. When I did, I cycled from Kings X to Croydon and back and quite enjoyed filtering through the traffic which was mostly stationary.
Anyway, I'm off to the Pyrenees in a week, better than London, I think altho' a bit hillier[;)]

London is the tropical South of the UK. We have better weather here than practically anywhere else you can go in this country [:)] Certainly a lot better than oop north. Too bad we don't have the countryside to enjoy it. But we have a few large parks [:)]0

riding through London on a regular basis is a privilege.
it's like baudelaire meets eddy merckkx, a totally existential, awe-inspiring and joyous thing. when on my fixed at night, riding round central london with an increasingly innate knowledge of the streets, i become a flaneur on two wheels. it's that good.
(not always, but this is what i try to remember when commuting)

rgisme, from central London go 20 miles in any direction (except towards slough [:D]) and you'll find some countryside stuff....innit...

Never really known how to react to critics of London. It's my hometown, where I entered the world etc so I feel a duty to defend it, but, truth be told this city has changed so much in the last 30 years that I have started to feel that I'm a stranger here myself.
Anyway to get to the point... knocking London is I think rather moot, the place is so vast that for every negative there is a positive somewhere close to hand.
