Who would they be then? [:p]0 -
There are some posters who when I see their name in the thread I leave it and don't bother reading it again. They post some inane rubbish and then some of the regulars get sucked into an interminable argument with them that has nothing to do with the subject. This thread is now useless for me. I wish you guys would just ignore the trolls and post on the thread subject.0

Or flag them. How they think they are doing their campaign any favours by continuing the crapspeed tactic of disrupting other forums is beyond me.0

The public order act 1986 states that riot is an offence committed by 12 or more persons gathered together for a common purpose and behaving in such a manner as to cause a person of reasonable firmness to fear for their safety.
Why not abandong the CM and have 100 or so smaller simultaneous events restricted to 11 people.
you see where this is going
1. You are no longer breaking the ludicrous use of the act. Let's face it the police were stretching it to the limit anyway
2. You cannot be tried together.
If the police want to play silly games then let's ensure we are so hard to process that they won't have nearly enough resources
Sorry to any lawyers out there but my legal knowledge comes from a temp job whilst I was a student years ago. Best get a real professional to check it out before proceeding with such an idea

The fact the public order act 1986 defines a riot is totally irrelevant to this issue.
It is about as relevant as the Battle of Hastings is to the issue.

spen666, I feel you may have missed the point. The police are binding themselves to a legal definition of a group of people. If you are one of 11 people you are legally not in a group with respect to this particular piece of legislation.
I suppose by the same token you could use this act to say that all motorists using the road at the same time are part of the same group and therefore could all be tried together for a single incident.
Read the act, perhaps I am wrong...0 -

The argument against CM is IMO the same as the argument used in Cheltenham against the 'cruisers'.
The cruisers argue that they are being picked on, are moved on all the time, and hassled by the police - that they are going about their lawful business of driving around the ring road (endlessly).
The reality is that many of them end up racing as they circuit the town (one nearly took me out on Albion street a few months ago), are moved on constantly for the mess they drop wherever they park (fast food wrappers), the noise from their stereos pee everyone off for miles and they end up doing burnouts in the trade parks which haven't moved them off yet. - A fair appraisal ?
They all to a man (or is that boy ?) claim that its always someone else doing this and that they are being victimised.
This compares to the CM where hundreds of cyclists gather specifically to 'reclaim the streets' - that is basically to waste a couple of hours deliberately holding up the traffic to make already miserable people living in a congested s-hithole trying to get home from work even more miserable.
Both groups are as bad as each other IMO

Utterly wrong. Come on Friday and see what really happens if you like, rather than your bizarre muddle of "reclaim the streets" which is a completely seperate movement to CM.
You know about CM from whatever you've read, which seems to be twaddle I'm afraid.
No cars are deliberately delayed, don't be daft, where are you getting this garbage from?0 -
What I don't get is what's supposed to be the intended eventual outcome of CM...
is it:
To make motorists annoyed at the increased congestion and thus consider that they should take more notice of cyclists?
To make the cyclists themselves feel good about their 'unbullyableness' (is that a word?) for the duration of the ride, due to riding in such a large group?
Or both? OR something else?0 -

If anything, It could be argued that CM attendee is worse, because a 'cruiser' is just an ignorant creature of habit and knows no better, but a CM attendee is being a bit provocative to make a point (like a dog p.issing on a lamp post to mark their ground).

Can anyone remember box ever making a cycling-friendly post?
Can anyone recall box ever posting anything to suggest a philosophical opposition to the extant road user hierarchy of motorist first, everyone else get to the margins and behave in the interests of the motorist?
Can anyone recall a thread protesting some derisory sentence for drivers killing or maiming vulnerable road users where box hasn't argued that we can all make mistakes and vulnerable road users should be more careful?
Ever? Anyone?

Sorry , but it is you who has missed completely the effect of S11 of the Public Order Act. There is absolutely no connection with the definition of riot at all.
You are deluding yourself.
As I said the definition of riot is as relevant to the effect of S11 of the 1986 POA as the Battle of Hastings is to S11.
Oh and I read the Act regularly, as it forms part of my work to advise upon it in practice

I didn't particularly intend to single you out Rothbook, but you seemed to have an answer to my question. The question wasn't "Why do you go on Critical Mass?", but "What is the aim/goal/purpose of CM?"

WHAT'S IS ALL ABOUT?
Critical Mass is often described as an 'unorganised coincidence'. It happens when a lot of cyclists happen to be in the same place at the same time and decide to cycle the same way together for a while
WHAT'S THE PURPOSE?
"Everyday, all over the world, people are resisting the problem culture of the car by getting on their bikes and riding, instead of driving.
Critical Mass is a celebration of the alternatives to cars, pollution, accidents and the loss of public spaces and freedoms.
Not an organisation or group, but an idea or tactic, Critical Mass allows people to reclaim cities with their bikes, just by getting together and out-numbering the cars on the road"
WHAT HAPPENS ON A CRITICAL MASS?
Each one is different and they follow no set route, with the direction being spontaneously chosen as people cycle along. Anyone is free to join or leave the ride as it pedals along.
The ride lasts no more than a couple of hours (depending on the weather!) and usually ends in a conveniently placed pub for more drinks.
Most all, they are peaceful, safe and fun!
DO I NEED A BIKE?
Nope! Critical Mass is not just for bikes - skateboards, roller blades, wheelchairs, pogo sticks - in fact any form of non-motorised, non-polluting are all very welcome!
