If you want a stupidly hard climb, head for Llanelly Hill. Makes the Tumble feel flat

I'll go and do the Glyntaff to Eglwysilan next time I'm in Wales. Sounds tasty. See if I can do it on my 39*23.

    Where's Llanelly Hill?
  • Hard enough to walk up it, let alone ride it. I passed the top of it on the road between Blaenavon and Brnymawr last sunday, just as the sky went black and it started hailing.....

Soz about hijacking the thread, but what times are people recording for the tumble? Start at blue sign just as you turn off B road near Govilon, finishing at the first white line at the top?

    PB: 19:53

  • Mark, the welsh HC champs when they run it start just before the kick up (after the canal bridge i think) but not sure of that. I believe the finish is not that far after the cattle grid. One of the chaikps I work with did it in 11 minutes or so. I did the bottom to the ice cream at the top in about 30 minutes, but then I dies 2/3 way up. My excess 6ks or so have a big effect on the tumble, so I'm keeping away from it until later in the year...[:)]

Mark, was that you I passed last sunday riding between Usk and Caerleon at about 2 ish? Wearing white shorts?

    must b a different mark.. :(

I dont have any white cycling shorts :)

With regards to the tumble, 11 mins sounds a good time. I time from just as you turn off the main road, and reach the cattle grid in about 11:50, although this isnt blasting it.. as i normally have to cycle 50 miles home after - the tumble is half way on my 100 miler :)

Out of interest Steve, what's your max hr.

I'll comfortably go into 150's up there. I'm finding that I can only hit the higher levels in races and when climbing at the moment so I think I'll be ridding the Rhigos a few times over the next few weeks.

My estimated MHR is 170, which gives me a LT of 147-150 which is where I end up in 10's. The highest I have recorded is 161.

Mark, Im impressed your 23 time is so close to your 22 time: the 23 is a pig of a course. I'm 2 minutes slower on the 23 d'oh!

Where did you go today Steve?
Last week when I punctured it also stripped my gear cable guide so onny had 2 gears to get home !!!
I went to Gilfach to watch the race go past as I did not get a ride [:(!] I went over Abertridwr mountain, then Trabanog (forgot how steep that was!) then met Windsor who was marshalling, then went with him over bwlch and I went over the stupid climb to abertridwr again [:D]
In Ponty Windsor was on my wheel and the lights changed so I stopped as I saw car coming from left, Windsor though I was going through light and did not stop as fast as me and almost hit car but managed to brake to stop just before it but then he could not get out of pedals so fell over, he was not hurt just embarrassed [:I] You will have to ask hime about it .

    Trebanog![:)]

Never gets a mention but I think it's the hardest around here. A lot of people just simply avoid this one and ride around it. You never here the local boys saying they rode up Trebanog hill, strange hey.

I'd love to give it a shot, where exactly is it? I found the village on multimap but where's the climb, also, does anyone know a good 100 mile ride starting and finishing in Cardiff, I seem to find 80 but those last 20 are proving elusive[:(!] also, what's a respectable time foor a 1st 100?

The climb goes from the Valley floor at Porth up to the <s>slum</s>village of Trebanog at the top. The whole area has roadworks at the moment. I could give you directions but in a week they could change. Basically, Cardiff Ponty. Porth then look for signs for Llantrisant once you get into Porth.

A nice 100 perhaps, Cardiff Neport Pontypool Abeygavenny Brecon Seybridge Merthyr Cardiff.

or Cardiff Rhondda (rhigos) Neath Bridgend Cardiff.

I was marshalling at Gilfach coch with Winsor and Barry. Once the bunch had passed we had to leg it to Pencoed, only just got there in time. I reckon you would have enjoyed that race, but it is a team event with 4 riders/team.

Went out usual route in the afternoon: Hirwaun, Treherbert, Ponty then home. Felt good too, did it in under 2.5 hours including a cuppa at the cafe stop at the top.

  • I was racing in the etape. was a great race. Steve R - as you were marshalling you probs saw me off the front going over Gilfach 1st time and just getting caught as I went over the climb on the way back.
Good 2 days racing tho - 5th on 1st stage, 8th team in TT (which was hard!!! - St Marys hill), and 3rd on final stage. Only finished 11th overall - team for TT not strong enough but over the 2 days picked up œ65! Not bad!
