Social media miscellany
Since social media things interest me, I thought it deserved its own thread.
First up (staying on the Bluesky theme), this is the sort of direction I'd expect it to go, as clearly they need to make money to run the thing. At present, it has just 20 employees, but with even just them and servers/services to pay for, there has to be income.

Of course, if no-one else is interested, this thread will be an echo chamber, and that would deserve to go in the irony thread.

I'll bite...
Something I find intriguing is the proliferation of unconvincing ai generated content on Facebook... Although it seems to have died down on my feed for the time being.

Hmm, must have pressed the wrong buttons, but have not noticed that. Mind you, I have got the experience fairly well clamped down with a decent adblocker.
I'd characterise FB as mostly the boring option, but maybe that's by design (by Zuckerberg - e.g. throttling political content on Threads) or because of the stuff I do in it. Despite that, it's still got a pretty amazing reach, and still its worldwide audience is huge (over 2bn users still access it *every day*, and that number is still growing).

Also @kingstongraham you might like to browse these BS starter packs for music for accounts to follow: https://blueskystarterpack.com/indie-music

I think he's noticed. And obviously dealing with it in a totally rational way.

And this is why Twitter is dead... at one time it was the place to get breaking news as it happened. X is now just a place where trolls yell at each other and the moon.

Having a little amusement just seeing if anything I post gets other Blueskyers' attention... not much it seems (which doesn't bother me in the least), despite quite of few of the people I follow following me back (must admit, I can't quite see the point of that, but seems to be one of the 'done things'). Will probably just continue farting into the void with (mostly) pretty pictures, in case anyone needs a pretty picture (or one of spark plugs).
That said, the bigger political/commentators' accounts are getting a lot of interaction, at a much higher ratio of followers v comments & likes than X, so they will be happy.

Following each other? Pretty much an echo chamber then?

This is a significant shift - it was why Twitter was so useful and successful until Musky came along and broke it. The Syrian situation could be followed almost in real time.

It's irritating me that my MP isn't on there.

I guess that means that Bluesky is being taken seriously now.

Because they’ve seen it work on X…… 🤦♀️

Ah, I put it on the Today's News thread.
Doubly stupid. 😉
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.

Bluesky is currently plagued with bots random following. Very annoying. Also their "Discover" tab has a very strange idea of how interested in furries and anime I might be, regardless of how many times I say "Show less of this".
I suppose it keeps me on the "Following" tab which can't be a bad thing.

They are actively working on the bots problem. Yes, I find the Discover tab a bit weird (FFS, not another rubbish rainbow photo, thanks), but I'm seeing if I can train it with "Show less like this". I've also put a complete block on Wordle posts, as I've got absolutely no interest in whether people have got it 1, 3, or are useless.

Maybe I need to follow more accounts.
At the moment I can't really use it on the train etc because every now and then it shows a picture that is really not ideal...

I've used quite a lot of the starter packs on areas I'm interested in, then unfollowed the ones from those packs that bore me. I've also subscribed to a couple of the auto-MAGA-block things. I'm following about 1K accounts now, and seem to get quite a good mix. One of them has a very similar name to yours, and seems to have the same taste in music... 😉

I only ever followed under a hundred accounts on twitter. The whole point for me is to be interested enough to want to know what they have posted, and follow a few that do the editorial work of retweeting interesting stuff.
Anything for general news and sport etc should go in a list rather than follow and you can take a look whenever and see the latest posts.

My Twitter feed was too narrow, I think, so I've gone in the other direction this time. It's a slightly bizarre mix of political and other stuff, but it feeds me an interesting diet without it being dominated by just the obvious people and institutions. I've tried in particular to go a bit more international with various European media bodies and journos, as well as US stuff (which is how I got into Twitter). For a while my feed was a load of Canadian stuff, which I've reduced now, though not entirely.

As a non twatter, eX, bluesky et al person, why do you do this?
(Isn't GBeebiesNews enough for you 😉?)
0 -
Mixture of reasons... to have some idea of what's going on the world (I don't have a TV, listen to UK radio or take a daily paper), and it's interesting interacting with various people who you don't know in person.
Why do you do Cake Stop? Couldn't you just go down the pub and talk to random people?
0 -
Guess just habit of past couple of decades.
Thing is, in the pub if you have the arsehole in the corner just spouting shite you can a) ignore b) tell him/her/it to shut the fuxk up c) turn up the music.... But in the Muskrat / Barton / Tate / Brand / Oliver type world, it just goes on and on and...
0 -
But you probably won't get a wide range of vaguely reliable news sources down the pub, so where do you go for that? I have a hunch you're not a Telegraph man...

I use the "off" button.
To be more precise, I don't use the "on" button to begin with.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.

You just mute or block stuff you are not interested in.
Aside from the nonsense, there are all sorts of interesting people that you are extremely unlikely to meet down the pub for geographic reasons.
