I might have been half joking, but now my feed will have another strand of randomness, and you never know, I might learn sumfink.

If there are any Bluesky starter packs for those, that's where I draw the line... there's only so much a man can take.

Just followed you Brian
For the pretty pictures, obviously! 😉

Simes? Sneaky trick not having the same screenname.... can't see any reference to breakfasts, but at least I've not had any porn ones I could mistake for you (recently, anyway)

You found me and I'm under my real name, I too have been enjoying the pictures 👍
I should probably post something on there myself at some point 🤔

Ha, so I'm still not sure who Mr Breakfast is on Bluesky!
FWIW, it's never going to replace FB, if FB goes Muskytits-up, as that's not suited to the number of photos I post (which is part of why I get so many FB views), but having a max of four isn't a bad discipline.
I've been interested, as a project, how the FB audience grows (and how to do that - it's been a fairly straight-line organic growth, with quite a lot of effort on my part to do that). As far as I can see on Bluesky, you either need some existing prominence/following (e.g. journalist or politician), and/or be included in one of the starter packs.
I was never interested in developing any sort of audience on Twitter.

Oh, this is priceless.
"You know that Meta decided to remove fact-checkers etc. Well, despite that, my response to a comment suggesting that this barge was my new form of transport, "It's a very large pedalo" was removed as being offensive. Do you think it's just possible that Meta hasn't worked out there's a slight difference between a pedalo and a 'pedo'?

Would anyone really notice if some of the major social media networks e.g. Facebook disappeared? I feel like to adds nothing to the world.

I would as I keep in touch with people worldwide through FB. I am an oldie though.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.

I could live without them but it does make it easier for keeping on top of what is going on in my various groups e.g. choirs and running club or for being kept informed on information from the rugby club I support although a lot is duplicated in other apps and WhatsApp groups. Something like FB keeps it all in a central location although it is getting to be a worse and worse experience using it.

Yeah, I use it to vaguely keep track of far flung friends and family and for a couple of local groups (freebay type things and some local businesses that update on there), although the algorithm seems more interested in showing me posts from random groups that I don't follow or want to see. Seems like a lot of scrolling to get past all the shite now.
I'm mid forties, not sure of that makes me an oldie or not.

Scrolling to get past the shite seems to be the future of all social media. They are going to monetise it, and to the max.

Yes, I'd miss FB. Quite apart from the fortune I'm going to make from it (almost $50 so far!), it is a fantastic tool if you use it on a browser, lock it down with adblockers and keep an eye on the privacy settings. There's no alternative with anything like the reach at the moment, as there is in the X/Bluesky situation (I don't miss Twitter in the least now). I find myself looking at The Guardian and Telegraph much less now, as the news diet is getting weirder and generally very parochial.
And yes, I'd miss CS, you interesting bastards.

PS, Facebook on a phone is no good for reading at all... just about unusable. I don't use any SM apps on the phone... it's all on the laptop, or via the browser on the phone, if needs must.

I suppose my point was it should be pretty easy for people to shift to other platforms although I guess some people will miss all the history they have on Facebook. For example, Signal (and many others) are identical to Whatsapp other than the number of users, so if Whatsapp disappeared, I don't think anything really would be lost. Not sure what people would switch to instead of Facebook, but I imagine something would pop up.

Well, despite the potential massive rewards for a successful rival, nothing's got even to the foothills so far for reach and functionality. Ditto Amazon. I think the reason X is floundering (at least in comparison with what it was) is that its function in reality (sharing hot-off-the-press news snippets) is much narrower, but FB's sprawling mess of communication, photo sharing, Groups, Pages, Events, etc make it, despite its flaws, a more all-round site, for those who like a one-stop-shop. Over a quarter of the entire world's population uses it daily, so that would be quite hard to build from scratch, even with the potential financial rewards.

This is why Bluesky really is a viable alternative to X, and why, despite it not being able to claim the supposedly 200m subscribers (it's at about 30m), it's being increasingly used by large organisations in place of X.

Just looked over at Instagram, and virtually nothing new over there in a week on my feed. Is it dying? TBH, I gave up on it pretty much as FB friends were just posting exactly the same stuff in both places. Conversely, FB Stories seems to be getting more stuff on it.

I'd never heard of the 'Skinner Box' phenomenon, nor its relevance to social media app scrolling. I don't normally like these types of videos, but I found her deadpan delivery amusing and suggestion of 'adding friction' a good one to help one realise how one is being manipulated.
Now must carry on scrolling...

Just left an Exeter FB Group which I was an admin of at one time. God, someone shared a couple of positive media pieces about Exeter, and all the moaners just pile in saying what a shit hole it is. I think they just get off on moaning publicly. I have an inkling they might be mostly Reform voters, given most of them seem to think that the 1960s was when Exeter was at its best, including the dual carriageway right through the middle of the High Street, which now, apparently, hasn't got any trees, according to them.

People referred back to "the good old days" in the 60s.
Rose tinted memories are not a new thing.

True, and I guess it's just the social media rage-inducing machine that amplifies it now. On the whole I don't see much of the shittier side of social media, partly because I seem to have ended up with a pile of lovely people a friends, but I'm always ready to block the shitters.
But I still find it a bit weird why people spend so much time expressing such negative views of where they live, especially on a Group that is run by "I Love Exeter". TBH, the admin seem to prefer 'engagement' at the expense of everything else. Perhaps all they care about is how much $ Meta is paying them. Me, I'd rather stick with my 'ban the miserable bastards' MO and earn nothing. Life's too short for continual shit.

Well done. I went some time ago as it was just all hateful & warped, and I didn't want to add one more view to Musk's hellsite. I did ask someone who also posts on Bluesky why they were still using X despite them hating Musk, and they said that all the AI stuff was on it. To me, that would be like a Jewish rocket scientist deciding to work in Germany in the 1930s because that's where all the rocket science was happening. There must come a time when convenience is trumped by principles.
Actually, my leaving was almost at the same time I had no problem calling it 'X', because I realised it had metamorphosed into Musk's bastard child. Twitter died when he went all in for Trump and fascism, and weaponised/enshittified X towards his evil ends.

Do I get bonus points for never using it?

Have to say I disagree. It has been trashed by the rocket boy, but there are still plenty of people posting there who are worth reading. And a lot who don't have a matching account on Bluesky. Just steer clear of the replies, much as you should ignore BTL comments on almost any online article.
