It's nothing to do with Brexit. Unless I'm misremembering you still needed a passport to get on the Eurostar pre-2019. There are and have been only two trains an hour on HS1 at peak times, so no point having higher capacity if you can carry a maximum of 1,500 passengers in that time. HS1 are looking to get that up to close to 5,000 an hour, so more trains, which will in turn need more space to get everyone through the turnstiles, 750 at a time.

    IRC.

He said the additional border checks now required, with UK nationals having to have their passports stamped, was adding at least 15 seconds per passenger. In London St Pancras International, even after upgrading the border gates, and with all booths staffed, the operator could only process a maximum of 1,500 passengers an hour, compared with 2,200 before the Brexit transition period ended, Damas said.

I think they need about 10 people/machines checking passports to facilitate the current 2 trains an hour and 20 for 4 trains an hour. The obvious limitation is that the Eurostar departure lounge has very limited options for expansion in any direction.

That was pointed out at the time of Brexit. To be fair, when they designed the St Pancras facility, they didn't foresee the idiocy ahead. In about 2015, because of a one-hour TGV delay to Lille, we had something like a six-minute margin to get off the TGV and onto the Eurostar, but still made it as the checks were minimal, which would now be impossible.

What is? A terminal was built for a certain capacity. The operator wants to expand above that capacity and so is speaking to some experts about how that can be achieved within the spatial limitations of a city centre terminus. Don't see a problem beyond the usual crap reporting of anything to do with numbers.

Don't think I'm arguing. I was curious to know whether the requirement was in face a perk of Brexit or not. Seems so, to some extent.

There are a lot of shops that aren't really necessary, but they might have long leaaes, so be reluctant to step aside.

It's a huge Listed building and will have pretty massive maintenance costs. Train fares aren't going to come close. The shops are what keeps it in the black. The shops occupy a pretty narrow strip either side of the main thoroughfare which connects the front of the station to the East Midlands (4) and Kent (2) platforms and the Thameslink (2 platforms) and Underground (8 platforms) stations below. Eurostar uses 6 platforms and the departures and arrivals lounges already occupy nearly two thirds of the old undercroft. It doesn't need more space, just to use it better.

Great here in France - shops were open on Boxing Day and everything normal through to NYE.

Maybe not so great if you work in shops though.

A house opposite me has horrendously tacky Christmas decorations (giant inflatables etc.) that go up as soon as their equally tacky Halloween decorations come down in early November. I can just about cope with them as they are mainly at the front of the house and we only see the back and I assume they do them for their severely autistic kids.

However, one of the decorations is a singing snowman. It only does two songs (Jingle Bell Rock and Holly Jolly Christmas) and is on from first thing in the morning until at least 11pm. Luckily I can’t hear it when I’m in the house but whenever I walk the dogs it is playing. It’s like the guy waking up to I’ve Got You Babe every morning in Groundhog Day, I don’t know how the neighbours haven’t been driven mad.

Stupid BIOS settings on Gigabyte MoBo. Grrrrr...

Trying to update wife's pc from ssd boot drive to NVME. Cloned fine. Booted fine when ssd disconnected. Wanted to reuse ssd as scratch disk but pc kept defaulting to ssd rather than nvme. Disabled ssd in bios boot menu now can't get a boot at all!!!! Ffs!!! Reset everything and still the same. No boot into win at all. She's going to kill me when I tell her! Still got original ssd with OS so might have to set bios and reinstall the ssd.

    It's never bloody simple.

Blood sugars dropping to 3.1 didn't help at all.

    Sometimes. Maybe. Possibly.

Discovering that my chosen location for a bit of night photography last night seems to have been directly under the world's busiest air traffic route. At least 25% of the shots I took over a 2 hour period have aeroplane lights in them.

When your garage advises that one brake calliper is binding slightly and you think I'll get that done later when it suits.

Well, now it is later and the calliper has completely seized. Lesson learned, a stitch in time saves nine. Muppet. 😡

Even worse that you know that the garage will be (at least) thinking "Told you so!"

Couldn't get booked in at the usual garage for two weeks. Then things became urgent so had to go to choice #2.

Choice #1 won't be best pleased when I cancel. Double oops. Well within their rights to say "Told you so".

Got lucky on Wednesday, the cloud cleared a bit just as the aurora started but that is pretty much what’s happened since October for me.

Instagram taking me hitting ‘not interested’ on suggested posts to mean ‘I’m really interested in all this shit about investing / property maintenance / car detailing please completely fill my feed with more of this crap’. Likewise, adding words you don’t want included just seems to get you more of the stuff. Are social media companies trying to drive people away from their products? Instagram and FB are pretty much unusable these days. The amount of people who think they are genius content creators is incredible. Oh to go back to the days where I just saw posts by people I know and groups I actively signed up for plus a few adverts. I’d like to automatically block anything that has “POV” in the caption. LinkedIn was really bad too but I managed to play around with some settings there and they seem to have actually helped a bit.

I've more or less given up on Instagram, having dabbled in there - partly because of that, but also it just feels like FB with a different layout, and the people I know on FB just post exactly the same stuff on IG. FB via laptop Chrome with a good adblocker or two and using the link https://www.facebook.com/?sk=h_chr to access it (gets the timeline in chronological order) is still absolutely fine, and I only use the phone to post stuff on the hoof or to respond to notifications. It's a pity you can't have the adblock add-ons on Android Chrome. At one time DuckDuckGo was better on Android, but Meta seems to have blunted its advantage there.
