Seemingly trivial things that annoy you

It's nothing to do with Brexit. Unless I'm misremembering you still needed a passport to get on the Eurostar pre-2019. There are and have been only two trains an hour on HS1 at peak times, so no point having higher capacity if you can carry a maximum of 1,500 passengers in that time. HS1 are looking to get that up to close to 5,000 an hour, so more trains, which will in turn need more space to get everyone through the turnstiles, 750 at a time.

IRC.
He said the additional border checks now required, with UK nationals having to have their passports stamped, was adding at least 15 seconds per passenger. In London St Pancras International, even after upgrading the border gates, and with all booths staffed, the operator could only process a maximum of 1,500 passengers an hour, compared with 2,200 before the Brexit transition period ended, Damas said.

I think they need about 10 people/machines checking passports to facilitate the current 2 trains an hour and 20 for 4 trains an hour. The obvious limitation is that the Eurostar departure lounge has very limited options for expansion in any direction.

Well, what an excellent bloody outcome.

That was pointed out at the time of Brexit. To be fair, when they designed the St Pancras facility, they didn't foresee the idiocy ahead. In about 2015, because of a one-hour TGV delay to Lille, we had something like a six-minute margin to get off the TGV and onto the Eurostar, but still made it as the checks were minimal, which would now be impossible.

What is? A terminal was built for a certain capacity. The operator wants to expand above that capacity and so is speaking to some experts about how that can be achieved within the spatial limitations of a city centre terminus. Don't see a problem beyond the usual crap reporting of anything to do with numbers.

Don't think I'm arguing. I was curious to know whether the requirement was in face a perk of Brexit or not. Seems so, to some extent.

They don't allow you to try now. There is a strict 30 mins cut off.

There are a lot of shops that aren't really necessary, but they might have long leaaes, so be reluctant to step aside.

It's a huge Listed building and will have pretty massive maintenance costs. Train fares aren't going to come close. The shops are what keeps it in the black. The shops occupy a pretty narrow strip either side of the main thoroughfare which connects the front of the station to the East Midlands (4) and Kent (2) platforms and the Thameslink (2 platforms) and Underground (8 platforms) stations below. Eurostar uses 6 platforms and the departures and arrivals lounges already occupy nearly two thirds of the old undercroft. It doesn't need more space, just to use it better.

Great here in France - shops were open on Boxing Day and everything normal through to NYE.
Maybe not so great if you work in shops though.
