Don't know if anyone else watched the documentary on immigration policy, but this little 'revelation' comes as no surprise. I mean you don't dish out that many visas by mistake.
And to think, people voted for them because they thought immigration was too high 😂.

Just in case anyone is wavering on whether Truss was & is completely nuts:
"One of Truss’s team suggested that what came over her was effectively the manic state of a mental breakdown: “She wasn’t depressed, but she had a breakdown. She was giddy with expectations. She developed a serious detachment from reality, she was more demanding and intolerant of people. She didn’t want to be challenged. Two things change people — power and money. Those are the two torches of life which tell you what a person is about. At the start of the leadership campaign, she listened to a lot of people because she was unsure of herself. When it dawned on her she was going to win, she jettisoned this approach and it made her psychologically unfit to be prime minister.”
Given her behaviour since, I do wonder if she's been permanently damaged by that period, or if she's always been that mad.

Oh dear. What a loss to the Tory Party. A burning intellect. Nothing like a dame.

Seems the ONS have somewhat confirmed Jenrick's accusation that Sunak deliberately increased the numbers of visas in an attempt to reduce wage inflation.
No wonder their vote shifted to Reform.

So she has switched from not being a Tory MP to not being a Reform MP?
1 -
Ever so handy of Haigh to have not lost that phone eleven years ago, otherwise we might have to 'ask questions' about how a government convinced voters that it was trying to reduce immigration when it was actively increasing it by handling out visas like nightclub flyers in a desperate attempt to reduce inflation.

I wonder if the press will be all over this... Badenoch calling herself a "straights A's" A-level candidate, but only getting BBD and not getting into Warwick uni as she had hoped. Maybe not as bright as her self-image she would like to portray.
0 -
To be fair she seems to be suggesting she’d been a straight A student at that point (presumably prior to A levels) so it’s her GCSE results that would have to be checked.
0 -
Is this the entirety of the gotcha?
0 -
Well, if she was a 'straight A' student, I'd have thought that if she's as bright as she thinks she is, she'd have done better than BBD, whatever her GCSEs were like. I'd not be crowing about my genius if that was my level. Maybe the teacher who advised her she'd be better off aiming to be a nurse than a doctor had more insight than Badenoch. There's nothing about her performance as an MP that screams 'genius' to me, or even 'intellectually curious'.
In other news, rumours circulating (via the Daily Mail) that Braverman might jump ship to Reform. Maybe, just maybe (if unlikely) that a few more like that will persuade Tories to consider whether not being Reform wannabes would be a better option, given that they aren't going to out-Farage Farage.

Is it too much to hope for leaders who are more intelligent than most of us?

Putting aside what a vague term that is and whether GCSE and A level results are reliable indicators, I'm not sure we need or want galaxy brains to be MPs. I don't think politicians need any more encouragement to think of themselves as 'betters'. They can speak to specialists if they need specialist expertise.
In any case the political system we have selects for political ability, not academic prowess.
Also, BBD as A level results is, I think slightly higher than the average if you account for those who don't take A-levels.

Scratching at old scabs, now everybody's doing it……

If the tories have any soul left, they should be please at that news.

I kind of want my leaders to be my betters to be honest. Countries are complicated and idiots making snap decisions on how to run one hasn't been working well.
Not that BBD necessarily makes you an idiot. But the D in maths doesn't make me confident about economic policy. Nearly getting into Warwick isn't that inspiring either.
Probably she won't ever get elected. 4 years is a long time in the Tory party.

I'd suggest trying to predict leadership ability from three A-level results is about as accurate as hair colour.

It's a process of elimination.
0 -
Are we talking about how it works or how you would like it to work?

No you are right. It's great to have an over confident dullard as the leader of the opposition. The only time it was better in this country was a blissful 50 day spell last year.

Probably rather have someone with slightly disappointing A levels than someone who peaked at age 18...
0 -
I'd quite like politicians to be aware of their own limits rather than be morons that highlight the Dunning Kruger effect.
0 -
I’d rather leaders who understand people rather (and care about them) than what their level of educational intellect is to be honest. However, I’m aware that leaves me likely to be disappointed much more often than not.
0 -
It's not a choice between the two is it? If so, why did the Tories choose neither?
0 -
For contrast, I don't think Rayner would call herself an intellectual or pretend that she was a 'straight A' pupil, but love or hate her, she's a smart politician. I'd rather someone underplays their intellect but surprises with what they achieve.
0 -
Quite a few smart people underplay it.
Where on this graph of the Dunning Kruger effect do you think the recent UK party leaders sit?
0 -
Hang on, things on that graph are labelled. In the spirit of RC, please remove the labels, and tell us that it explains everything.
0 -
Where on the graph is RC? That's actually a tricky one.
0 -
You're doing your usual thing. I've not said that.
By the way, your elimination process, would certainly not have filtered out Truss, which rather makes the point that you can get all the top grades and still act foolishly.

Obviously it's very comforting to just say they were all thick, but they weren't.
