The BBC loves a bit of self-flagellation

It's a BBC News investigation. Several of the accusations relate to other programmes on other channels. MasterChef is also made by an external company, not the BBC.

So, Dartmoor Visitor Information Centre is to close because it can't to afford to renew its lease with the Duchy of Cornwall, while the Duchy continues to rake it in from the nearby (empty) Dartmoor Prison. The traffic all seems to be one way.

It is even more offensive when you think the DoC doesn't pay any tax.
I'm wondering who else they think will lease that place. With the best will in the world Princetown is a bit grim. There's a reason it was chosenas the site for a prison.

The Duchy of Cornwall makes an annual grant to Dartmoor National Park.
The grant covers the rent of the Princetown centre, That rent will be a small proportion of the cost of staffing and operating the visitor centre. The real reason for closure is the reduction of public grant funding to DNPA.
But sure, boo landlords.

Ooh £19000. Don't spend it all at once.

I think this is the bigger story.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.

0.07% of annual turnover.
As a proportion of income, quite a lot less than a high earning UK employee joining the national trust.

Is it?
Landlord receives income from property.
Bears... woods, etc.
The estate is huge, so of course the income is not trivial. There was a fuss about lifeboat stations the other day. Then it turned out it was actually a peppercorn rent to allow the existence of a contract (no consideration: no contract) and rights to the tenant that flow from that contract.

Quite so re who else would rent that. Business will be a bit slow when the weather's rubbish... which leaves about 27 per year when it's not.
BTW, I found this a very interesting book, not least in its account of how the prison was predicated on a plan to turn Dartmoor into an agriculturally thriving area by land improvement. I really don't think the rent is what means it can't stay open.

Maybe, though neither the post nor the article mention what the new lease would cost - maybe just the straw that broke the camel's back at a time when they have to make a decision.
TBH, it seems like the sort of operation that might be semi-replicated with volunteers, if the current model (for whatever reasons) isn't affordable.

I think the head of a charity paying himself millions in rent is a conflict of interest, at best.

Don't think it's too complicated tbh. One just needs to be clear as to what "no risk" actually means. i.e. does it mean there are no risks, or does it actually mean very little risk?

Brian should look away now...reports coming in that Musk will donate €100m to Reform.

Weren't Musk and Farage getting all pissy about labour 'interfering' in the US election all of 2 weeks ago?

So was Stevo

Really? Are charities not allowed to earn money, now?

DNPA publish their accounts so you can see pretty clearly where the money is received from and spent.

What UK election are we talking about here that Musk might be interfering with?

You seem to be getting confused with taking the piss out of lefties who thought they could swing the election for Kamala.

Wrong end of the stick there. The charities are paying him rent.

If he really wants to support a charity then a nominal rent would probably be the best thing he could do.
Or, he can lend his name and make millions. I guess he is a bit strapped for cash.

He is donating to a political party, if it isn't to try and get them elected, then why?

I don't have details of all the rents but when someone looked at the lifeboat station it was a peppercorn rent. I suspect someone is noting that some of the tenants are charities and assuming that all the rental income derives from those charities.

But let's obsess about one mobile phone and a minister who's already resigned.
