US Politics / Biden thread

Yes, I saw an interview with a blue collar guy in Pennsylvania the other day. Didn't seem a maga like Trump lover but said he would vote Trump as he felt he had more money in his pocket under Trump last time round. I guess there were a lot more who felt similar than we expected

You're acting like the only options that should be available are "progressives" or lying populists.

The idea that Harris is an open border Marxist and soft on crime.

Mate, Musk is after as much government cash as he can get. Trump has zero interest in reducing government debt. He is not going to be good for the US or world economy.

I will only give posts in this thread due respect from people who's predictions were correct!

Great post Focuszing, respect.

Can I post an animated gif of the booster rocket being caught?

That may well be the case, but all I am doing here is calling into question the judgment and forecasting accuracy of some people.

I made no prediction.
Trump increased public debt last time he was president.

There's a whole spectrum of political beliefs ranging from blue to red (in the US), red to blue (in the UK), left to right, progressive to populist etc.
My point is that there is - in my view - a tendency amongst those who consider themselves to be "progressives" to dismiss those who think differently to them as misinformed (to be diplomatic). There is never any real attempt to understand the concerns of such people, as it would mean giving credibility to views that "progressives" find unacceptable.
So in the UK, the "progressives", who are generally left-leaning and pro-EU, dismiss leave voters as thick racists, believe that the referendum was won by "Russian interference" or manipulation of FB by Cambridge Analytica etc and still can't accept that Brexit is just about the most democratic thing ever to happen in the UK, despite it being subject to a referendum and two GEs before implementation.
The likely outcome of this is a decidedly unpleasant Reform / Farage / ERG flavoured government in the UK next time, and further angst about voters not doing the right thing.
Obviously there are some sweeping generalisations above, but one surely has to wonder why we've left the EU and the US has voted Trump back in, despite a few well documented character flaws and criminal convictions.

Why are the left to blame for everything the right does?

I find it bizarre that people think there is some deep mystery to any of this. Some people have not prospered and so voting for a professed change to the status quo feels attractive or at least worth a shot. That's all it is.

I said Trump could win.
I think Trump and Musk are self-serving arses. Respect.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.Veronese68 wrote:PB is the most sensible person on here.0 -

Didn't remain or soft Brexit parties win the majority of the popular vote in the post Brexit elections?
Given we had no clue what Brexit would look like I don't think it passes the informed decision that is required to be considered democratic tbh, but that's besides the point.
I think this ended up being largely an election about living costs. People feel like they got poorer under Biden. It'll always be difficult to win if lots of people feel like you made them poorer.

nope, they're gullible

Also 'the Left' and 'the Right' are not single corporate entities.
You don't think that there's a corresponding and similarly dismissive tendency among those who use 'progressive' as a pejorative?
I think it's just good old fashioned tribal allegiance with some new terminology now that heretic and apostate are a bit outdated.

I'm expecting Harris to be graceful when she concedes tonight. I'm sure we wouldn't see a similar if the situation was reversed. I can't see how anyone can be comfortable with that.

I don't think Musk is the type to forget this easily.

Oh for god's sake the UK is so insignificant he won't give a shit.

I don’t see any mention of Musk. Is he to be offended on Donnie’s behalf?
Bless.

Oh come on. I know he likes to act like a moody teenager but he's not going to let a few of insults get in the way if there's money to be made.

Weirdly, I don't feel anything like as shell-shocked about Trump as I did about Brexit, though I kinda feel I ought to, as the ramifications will be global. I guess I'm pleased there oughtn't to be violence this time, and that America will get the government it deserves, as it's made its choice. My suspicion is that the have-nots will again discover that populism will never deliver for them, and the system will be rigged even further against them, as the oligarchs enrich themselves obscenely, but it's time for them to find out.

"And with real-life Bond villain Elon Musk beavering away on X spreading a flurry of slurry across the gooniverse" tickled me, but he doesn't spare the Democrats either.

No violent insurrection.
Every cloud has a silver lining. 😐️

Obviously it would cheer me up if a shitstorm in the US nudged Starmer to reconsider his Brexit position, especially if 10% US tariffs on everything British depressed demand there as well. Every cloud, and all that...

I don't see how/why I should take someone's word for it when they get it a boat backwards and belligerently proceed in an unsighted folly.

Yep, graceful as expected.
