2024 UK politics - now with Labour in charge

Sure, but that 2nd part is a lot of words desperately trying to avoid agreeing that an increase in employers NIC isn't a tax on working people, as evidenced by comparing payslips a month apart.
We also agree that a lot of other factors will impact future wage increases
The days of "inflation busting" wage rises are over...you've got your getting.

Anyone whose employer thinks that a 2% increase in employers NIC represents a 2% increase in wage costs should firstly correct their employers maths.

I think we can assume the figure refers to two percentage points of the gross salary, i.e. from 13.8% to 15.8%. Notwithstanding that it's all speculative at this stage, I think we can rule out increasing the rate to 14.076% (2% of the employer NIC). 🙄

Agree.
Any increase of the magnitude rumoured will have a material impact on our UK group profits given the number of people involved and average salaries.

An increase from 13.8 to 15.8 in the employers NIC rate doesn't increase your cost to your employer by 2%

It seems to me that 6 months ago we had an unfunded 2% cut in NI. If the policy at the time was to flip 2% from personal to business tax, would there have been an outcry?

From businesses, probably. But it didn't happen.

Two years ago, increasing employee NI to pay for health and social care was a Conservative government policy. Then they reduced it by 4%.

If it impacts your after tax pay then it is relevant, whether or a pay slip or not.

The point is that the impact in businesses is expected to be material if the expected changes to the employers NIC rate and thresholds are made.

A change in the employer NIC rate from 13.8 to 15.8 won't increase the wage bill by 2% though, will it?

If a tax increase doesn't change your tax home pay then its not a tax on your income.
Vague wafting about other things that might have other impacts in other ways simply doesn't change that fact.

That's how I'd expect your employer to reply when you point out their mathematical error.
Stay focused on the facts if you want a pay rise is my advice

Whichever way you want to describe it, it's a non-trivial increase in business taxes, especially if the rumours of removing relief on employer pension contributions turn out to be true. If it was trivial, then it wouldn't be worth doing.
What percentage would you like us to use?

I think it needs an update to "I knew they were going to raise taxes but I didn't expect it to affect in any way anyone who has a job, or any businesses".
Again, if you are pretending to believe this, you are not serious.

I have no preference
Primarily because the mix of salaries in every business is different. But it will be less than 2 %.

Apologies to TBB for the publisher, but these charts suggest that there are lots of people who think taxes can be raised without it affecting them.

Were the questions phrased like that, or were they phrased with an aim of raising a significant amount of money? If not, it seems quite difficult to glean anything useful from it.

This thread summed up.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.Veronese68 wrote:PB is the most sensible person on here.0 -
The questions are at the top of each chart.

I didn't say that it would. Try arguing with the right person.

What a waste of a survey then. What's the point of it?
"Choose up to three" makes it even more pointless.
It is undeniably true that taxes can be raised without it affecting me.

Thanks for attempt at advice, but I don't think I need it from you.

I take it back. The interesting thing from it is that even 80% of Conservative voters accept that some taxes need to rise.

My point remains that a tax which impacts your after tax pay is relevant. Arrogantly attempting to dismiss the point does not help your position.

I didn't say you said it would.
I think we agree

Sure. Other things are other things which have other impacts.

Maybe tell us about all your fantastic successes at pay negotiations and we might want to listen.

You didn't want advice. Fine. Don't come crawling back now.
