Dunno. There are some white and green teas that you should use water at 80⁰ or 90⁰ rather than boiling and some teas are better brewed more than once while some should not be left to stew, but that's about it. Just hot water and leaves. There's perhaps more ceremony with tea if that's your thing.

Think you are right. Tea drinkers tend to be more like cream tea people and just obsess about the sequence in which miscible liquids are dispensed from holding vessels.
So if you are drinking tea with a cream tea, is it milk, tea, jam, cream...or...

Oh, was it a supermoon? I was just walking back from the pub and was thinking what a clear sky it was, closely followed by thoughts on light pollution due to living in London, then realised it was a full moon. No shock or awe featured in any of these realisations, sorry if that disappoints.

I think it’s only really noticeable in the early stages of it rising. The BBC did reports that it was going to happen, an item on the 10pm news with bits from around the country of people gathering to watch it and more about it this morning. I think the use of supermoon, that I can’t recall being used until maybe 10 years ago, makes people think it’s something special.
I love the night sky and enjoy looking at a full moon but really don’t get it being bigged up so much. From a photography point of view I actually find other phases of the moon more interesting (and a full moon is a PITA if you want to photograph stars or aurora). The lunar corona was pretty spectacular though.

What is it about self-checkout tills that gets people so triggered? Why don't they get exercised about pick-your-own farms, automatic barriers at train & underground stations, cash machines, hot drink dispensers in supermarkets, etc?

They are uniformly a bit crap, and tend not to offer the obvious advantages of the other examples you've given. They work fine if you're just buying a meal deal or a handful of items I guess.

I'd argue that scan as you shop is a game changer for big shops: allows you to sort your shopping as you take it off the shelf rather than as some random spits it at you like catching practice down the firing range.
Self checkout for small shops: meh, always seems to go wrong with the order of putting the basket down, scanning your first item and introducing your own bag.

They're just a bit annoying. The ones in Waitrose particularly seem almost impossible to do it without getting some sort of error message that means you have to call an assistant. And buying alcohol means somebody has to come along and verify that you're over 18. Easier to seems the manned checkouts.

Just been into Aldi, and just one assistant was manning six tills in action, including the things you mention (I had two instances alone, not least as I was picking up some beer). Meanwhile there were longish queues at the manned tills.
But, details aside, I'm not sure why it's turned into a rather totemic thing. Surprised that the RW press haven't yet blamed them on Starmer.

It'd be interesting to see if the checkout operators could do it. After all they don't get all that crap about 'unidentified item in bagging area' or 'please put your item in the bag'.

I've decided I shouldn't really point a friend of mine in the direction of this article:

Every year he frequently voices his hatred of winter, of the shortening days, of the cold, of the hour change etc., in a way that only reinforces his hatred of all things winter, almost to the extent he wants everyone else to share his hatred.
Pretty much what the article says: sure, I like the summer, and cycling or walking in the warmth, long evenings etc. But shorter days give excuses not to feel guilty about staying in and not doing much, not getting out of bed early when it's still dark and there's no deadline to meet, winter warming foods, etc. And anyway, by the time you've blinked, the days are starting to get longer (about eight weeks from the hour change), and that means that spring and summer on the way.
As the article suggests, a lot of it is about 'mindset': finding things that are pleasurable and focusing on them. Though (obviously) easier said than done. I must admit I was surprised that 'SAD' is less common (apparently) the nearer the Arctic Circle you go. Seems they've have to learn to live with it, at least at a population level.

I'm not keen on the short days or the extra rainfall as it limits options on a lot of outdoor stuff like cycling cycling, but it's not the end of the world for me. And on weekdays in the office you don't feel like you're missing much.
It also means that skiing is not far away, which is a bonus 🙂

I like proper winter weather, cold clear days and some snow. Unfortunately it's usually rainy and windy instead. I do like being able to wear jerseys and jackets as I get too hot in anything but t shirt and shorts most of the rest of the year.

It was just that the article more or less hit the nail on the head re my friend, and yet even though he's a very good friend, it doesn't feel right to bring his attention to it, almost because it is so on target.

Yeah, even I'd have to admit that long stretches of wet & windy weather does my head in a bit, but then I make the best of a bad job with a session on the turbo listening to some good music without even having to go out of the front door.

I'm also cheering myself up a bit this winter after Christmas (partial retirement, yay!) by changing my daytime teaching to after-school teaching, so I can get out on the bike in daylight if it's nice. Given my friend WFH exclusively, he's not even got to make that change.

I just got a slightly random PM from someone who's just joined the forum, has seen it's almost Norwegian Blue status, and is now wondering how to delete his account. I've no idea... mind you, I'd just not look and not post to get the same effect.
