A few years ago, I resolved to go and actually see some of the great works of art that I have admired "in the flesh" as opposed to in books and online etc. I'm glad I did.

One of the things I miss most from London is the access to a vast collection of great works of art. The Courtauld is home to one of the greatest collections of Impressionist paintings in the world. The Seagram Murals by Mark Rothko in Tate Britain are a particular favourite as is the Raphael Cartoons housed at the V&A.

I don't think they're a patch on The Starry Night.

Nicely painted palette of blue and grey.

I think sometimes there's a tendency to feel the need to be impressed by art because of it's origins, whereas sometimes it's just crap.
Other times though, it leaves a real impression. I did find a lot of the First Nations artworks from the Pacific NW quite haunting. (Aside from the tourist tat you get on Granville Island.)
Here are a couple of the most notable:

Some of the instant art that appears on LinkedIn is pretty good. Starts out quite simply then after a bit it's stunning. Some of it done by very talented kids.

I agree with you for most things, but I must confess the Mona Lisa I found disappointing. I'd like to see the Guernica in the flesh, might have to arrange a long weekend in Madrid.

I just have to accept that I don't really get most art. Of all the really famous works I've seen 'in the flesh' the Sistine chapel ceiling is the only one that I have really appreciated. With the others the reaction has generally been 'is that it?'. I wouldn't mind seeing Lowry's works in person as I like the way he manages to do so much with what seems such a simplistic style but for the rest it always seems to be meh (I appreciate this is almost certainly my failing).

I did Lowry at school as part of English and art crossover many yrs ago. Even back then I had a respect of his simplicity compared to the normal great paintings that I just thought of as boring at the time.

I do remember seeing a big Canaletto of Venice in the NG and realising that though he's good at Venice, he didn't really give a toss about the water.

This animated reality art is exceptional.

It's better than the "Art" you posted. You couldn't even be bothered to embed the images.

Glass art doesn't get enough attention. I love this sort of thing (Chihuly)
It is incredible up close, but you do need a big garden to own one.

Is this thread about art?

Shouldn't that be titled "two tourists contemplating Starry Night" (digital photograph and commentary, 2024)?

I'm going to say that's staged, because the one on the left is wearing clogs.

Told you, not playing.

Over in the maths world Euler's identity is regularly considered the most beautiful. Art in an equation.
And Newton wasn't even responsible for it! Euler still doesn't make the famous mathematician list though.

A smashing piece of equational art there BigBean.

It is very elegant and deeply satisfying, but I don't see how something that was not created can be considered art.

Yeah, art is in some way allegorical.
Science is stunning and beautiful and complex and can inspire art, but it isn't in itself art.
Architecture can be art. Not least because it is so easy for it to be the opposite.

Can technology be art?

I think you are taking my post too seriously although if I had a choice between hanging the Mona Lisa or Euler's identity on my wall, it would be an easy decision.

Depends on what you mean by the term. I think of it as the implementation of something. This could, I suppose, be utilitarian or something more.
I don't think that rocket is art, because everything about it was completely defined by function. There is no other way it could be.
Is it an amazing achievement? Yes. Could they have made the rocket a different shape, or added some colour or shape to the flame, or perhaps described a different trajectory? No.
