The US trails only Mexico, Turkey and Estonia (?!) have higher murder rates per capita (although Estonia has zero by firearm). Come on guys - you can do it.

the right go rabid at any attempt to limit guns, but they're ok with measures to stop people voting
can't see any sign of that changing, the attitude is that it'd all be ok if only more people had guns

That brings things into stark reality. Even more so if it includes the civil war.

Hmm, an interesting opinion/analysis here, that by taking Twitter off to the Trumpian right and, in effect, turning it into an effective echo chamber for the right, in contrast with the 2016 election where the left had their echo chamber there, the Trumpists are misreading the election dynamic. That would be quite a sweet end to Musk's aim.

Maybe he is a genius after all?

One question only...

The MAGA blue tick comments underneath are both terrifying and hilarious.

Is that how he's applied them in the past in exactly the same way, but with changes?

I'm not sure. I haven't changed my mind at all, but have a different opinion.

I do sometimes wonder whether Rick had the right reaction to the forum.

Do you think the forum had the right reaction to Rick?

We should probably have a RIP thread.

For him personally, given the way he deals with arguments and with stuff going on in his life, probably.
Given how poisonous a lot of online debate has got, for the most part, I think CS is largely a model of relative decorum and intelligent debate (especially given that it is largely self-moderated), and I value it.

Agreed. It is a shame Rick had that outburst and I hope he returns to the Forum. I suspect the forum itself had little to do with it, usually in such instances someone has a lot of kindling built up and is just waiting for a little spark to set it off. Hopefully if there are other issues he is able to work through them at his own pace.
Anyway, back to Silver and Trump/Harris. I still don't think polls and models will count for much. The election will be decided on the gut feeling of a tiny % of voters and could swing either way. I still think Harris though and it won't be as nerve jangling as 4 years ago.

An interesting piece in the Graun...
tl;dr - it's still very tricky to call, but there's a little bit of optimism (apart from for those hoping for a Trump victory).

But how can Rick be dead when we still have his posts?

I just have a feeling when it comes down to it and people are in the booth, they will remember the last Trump presidency and the insurrection and the majority of swing voters will go Harris.

Well, let's hope so, but when you have the press and Trump initially criticising Harris for not having detailed policies, then, when she does give detailed policies say that "Trump's simple messaging cuts through in comparison with Harris's detailed policies" (NYT), you have to wonder.

It's a bloody good question. I don't know.
The odd thing is I often agreed with him, but couldn't get him to realise. Whereas, you and I almost always disagree, but in good spirit.
I mean christ you support Chelsea. Where to even start?

I have to say that was Rick’s greatest blind spot. I’d often post something in agreement then as I’m an oldie he’d have to argue against.
Meanwhile, Trump wants to shut down Google as it is displaying bad stories about him.

Stupid forum blank post.

Glad I'm not the only one.
Mind you, that's not a blank post now... reminds me of the books of music for shows where now and again there's a page with the words in the middle "Blank page". "Oh no it's not!", like the motorway signs that say "Sign not in use".

Rick's blind hatred towards older generations, and regular anger wound me up at lot, but the forum is better off with him than without.
I felt you could tell when he was suffering from a bad night's sleep due to his kids as he'd be extra angry that day.
He does come across as a very angry person in general though which is not a healthy state of mind. However he often raised interesting points and clearly was interested in a lot of topics, but needs to learn that his opinion is not always the only valid one. A little humility and an occassional ability to accept he was wrong would improve his relationbship with other forumites.

There was a step change in demeanor when he made a salary breakthrough. Around when he was equating ambition with London, thereby alienating 8/10 of the population.
Only for him, it's not salary, but attractively geared commission, I think. which comes with a lot of pressure.

A little self reflection is perhaps in order too chaps
