Seemingly trivial things that intrigue you

Nah, market got wind of who they were looking at and were really not impressed.
TBH, from what I heard of the shortlist, they were really grubbing around, which surprises me given the rep schroders have. I've always had a great time hiring for them when I did albeit under a rather more charismatic CEO.

Prompted by this, I remembered I had some oriental 'fish sauce', and on checking that's BBE 2006. No idea what I bought it for.

This a/c got a bit roasted when it suggested Americans wouldn't understand the magic roundabout in Swindon, so I was expecting it to get similarly roasted with this one... but it seems that pretty much everyone agrees.

That started out as fresh I hope.🤣🤣

Apologies, but this is a very funny thread too for the comments, and earned the account a block from the Mrs Brown's Boys account.

Vietnamese pho?

I really can't remember, though I think I'd remember if I'd cooked that. And I don't think it was for a Heston Blumenthal chocolate cake either.

Part of the reason is that although there are obviously some regional accents in America, there are an awful lot of Americans who don’t really have one - it’s just generic.
UK however you can almost always place them and there are so many. I think often the Americans learn a generic British accent not a proper regional one which is actually 90% of Brits.
I mean, in South Yorkshire it changes village by village it’s so specific.
That’s why in Bridget Jones, Zellweger sounds pretty good as she’s going for that very specific posh west London accent.

Less and less though due to mobility. I used to be able to place people within 2 miles but that was back when people died in the town/village they were born in without leaving in between (summer holidays aside).
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.

But sad to report that the true Devonian accent will have disappeared in two generations. I think the south west accents are less durable than northern ones, though some specific ones in the north are getting absorbed into a more general northern accent.

You are very much one for explaining how language evolves, and that we shouldn't be wedded to what we were taught was "right" by English teachers 40 years ago. Is lnt the evolution of accents kind of the same thing?
Fwiw it seems to me that there are increasingly rural and urban accents. I hear that were I live now, and it certainly was striking in southern Scotland. The Midlothian mining town accent sounds like being shouted at by an annoyed Orangutan with a sore throat, but it exists alongside the Borders rural accent, which is still like listening to Jim Clark.

Oh, for sure, but that doesn't mean that one can't mourn the loss of something beautiful that will never return.
Aha, it's the disappearance of the rhotic R in Lancashire that was in the news a while ago.

I'm sure Rob Hatch, Blackburn boy, will be rolling his Rs...

I haven't seen any Stephen Fry stuff for ages, but I chanced on this, and my estimation of him was in no way diminished. Even if you don't agree with him, or like him, he's got a brain. Worth a listen - the subject is 'political correctness', and he's on the same side of the aisle as Jordan Petersen.

The woman around 1900 reminds me of visiting the town where my dad grew up in the Ribble valley. Despite only living about 15 miles away, I had to really concentrate to understand what people were saying when we went to visit.

When I first came to Devon, there were some older folk I took a while to tune into, though the lack of dentures for some of them did play a part in that.
I still come back to this frequently... that accent has already gone, but these voices, especially of Mr Thorne, still sing to me from beyond the grave, and make me smile.

Abbey Road live cam…
How annoying must it be for regular drivers on that road, and yet mesmerising at the same time. 🤨

If I was in charge of highways there I’d replace it with a puffin crossing just to stop the sad cliche.

Could do with you making the decision about the road past/through Stonehenge.

It's listed.

With Rick on that. How can I have a very demure, very mindful cuppa break if i can’t people-watch people taking pictures if people crossing the road..

Meh it’s so unoriginal like all those people I saw outside the Louvre doing the photo trying to look like they are holding one of the pyramids. Surprised copying a bunch of Boomers is your thing!

Really? That’s ludicrous, the road must have been resurfaced several times since and the beacons don’t look original so they are just listing a concept.

A lot of listed buildings have been rebuilt, not least Stonehenge.

It's not even in the same place I don't think. Seem to remember reading it had been moved 50m or something like that.

Computer processing and percentages. Currently transferring photos from camera to computer and get...
...and it's not just missing a decimal point as it went over 1000% near the end.
