That's where the commerciality comes in. Anyone who moves from CFO to CEO and continues to focus on the beans isn't doing their job properly. Which can be just as bad as your sandpit scenario (although in a different way, obviously).

What I do and my suitability (or not) isn't relevant here, even if I wanted do that sort of thing - which I don't.

Before they dragged him out of the car it was stupid to wind the window back up, but he was pretty compliant and never threatening and still got roughed up. It was only speeding he got stopped for, wasn't it?

It seems he was speeding without a seatbelt. Then was pretty rude about them knocking on his window and then he wound it up again. It seems to be the law that you need to open the window when asked to do so by the police.
The criticism I see of the police is that they should have deescalated the situation. That's true, but I don't think it makes the escalator look good.
He was also too broken to sit down as asked because of his knee surgery and yet he was about to play an American football game.
He deserved more warning about opening his window and shouldn't have been dragged out, but he definitely could have behaved better.

I’ll give you an example. New CEO of Schroders, the famous British asset manager. Has never invested. Has never raised assets. Has never really spoken with clients about running money.
I think that’s madness tbh.

Surely it depends on the business. You wouldn't necessarily expect football club CEOs to be ex footballers.
Admittedly that's a somewhat extreme example!
The CEO clearly needs to have a deep understanding of what actually makes the company money. I dare say that's easier if you're someone that's come up the company off the tools (or metaphorical tools in most cases).
The longer more boring answer is that these things all have to be on a case by case basis. I think theoretically it's difficult to beat 'lifers' who know the company inside and out. OTOH I work at a company that has consistently taken the opposing view and hired out for the top job, and it's been enormously successful.

Clearly there will be cases where the appointment is a bad call and I guess you'll be in a position to see a few current examples. However it doesn't mean that CFOs are necessarily a bad choice for CEO, it will all depend on the individual and the circumstances.

Well yes, of course hiring externally for big hires is great, fantastic, so fantastic in fact, I’ve got a presentation here just about it, oh and just ignore the eye watering fees at the bottom, a good ceo is worth 100x that 😬

So on this specific example, turns out Russell Reynolds (a rival, innit) fumbled the CEO search so this was very much a last-resort kind of appointment.
Guy's been in PWC for 30 years, 3 months at schroders he gets the top job. Eek.

TBH I am more sceptical about appointments like this where the person has been most of their career in 'the profession' compared to having had a decent stint in commerce and industry.

Although could this be a case of the client favouring the internal candidate/ known quantity (even though he hadn't been there long) and dismissing potentially better external candidates put forward by the agency?

Every time you empty your kitchen cupboards. You find stuff that has a best before date which was before you moved to that house.

That'd be a bit worrying for me, as I've been here for 32 years, but I did do a mince thing a couple of weeks ago with some tomato puree in a sealed container that had a best before of 2020. I think I've survived (or I'm still on BR in the afterlife).

When I helped my parents move house two years ago, there were spices that made the move that had labels from a shop in the town they'd lived in before they last moved. They previously moved house in 1982.
I should add that though they made it to the new house, they didn't get as far as the cupboards.
