US Politics / Biden thread

There's some optimism abroad. This from Kelly-Ann Conway's ex. If I were on the Harris campaign I'd be making it explicit to supporters to get huge huge crowds for rallies, and maybe fill a large stadium or two over the coming weeks... that would make Trump completely flip. His ego is so so fragile. And then there would be the realisation that if he loses he's still got all his legal troubles which he won't be able to make go away with a corrupt AG. And that would terrify him.

Let's not forget a few weeks ago it was all over in Trump's favour.

Quite so. Let's hope that Harris/Walz can keep it together and Trump carries on decomposing. But as George Conway mentions, the memory of 2016 ought to serve as a potent warning to the Democrats.
But even the NYT, which often bends over backwards to normalise Trump, is noting a shift. But with the crazy Electoral College system, who knows?

It was all over, while Biden was being a stubborn old bugger, but now...
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.

Trump is the stubborn old bugger 😁

Trump likes to go on about his Scottish heritage, well, while in Scotland at least. Maybe he should take a cue from the bard.
“O, wad some Power the giftie gie us
To see oursels as others see us!..."
Biden seemed to, or at least listened to others.

Still not dissuaded that Biden played the long game all along. If he did, it would be exquisite, but we'll probably never know. But if Harris wins, it would make a great (if speculative) film.

You can never discount him and the 2016 polls had Clinton winning throughout, so we definitely need to approach with caution.
I have a sense though that a lot of Americans who were looking for a credible opponent against Trump are slowly getting convinced by Harris.

i don't think biden was playing any game, imo he has declined to the extent he wasn't able to understand and be objective about his situation, it took a lot to get him to step aside
but he's still president, clearly he shouldn't be, he could resign and harris step in and run things, but he won't
this is grim reading (yes, douthat is certainly republican, but he's no maga nutbag, i've read him for many years, imo he's a good guy)...
the democrats have managed to get away with making biden give up on seeking a second term, they don't want to hand trump the opportunity to exploit their having another battle to force him out of the remainder of this term, at least until the election
the risk they face is that prior to the election, some crisis occurs that biden can't cope with

And even if we think in the normal run of things Harris will have enough to win as Harold Macmillan said "events..." . Something unforeseen could impact things

You have to acknowledge that the needle has moved. Question is whether it is a bounce or the start of a trend.
She's doing well in swing states and with swing voters as well. Trump will have an aneurysm if he wins the popular vote but not the electoral college.

I can't see how he can win the popular vote - he's lost it both times, he's alienating various constituencies left, right and centre, and he's getting crazier the more he sees he's losing ground.
That said, if the US does fairly vote him in, they'll deserve what they'll get.

I foresee increased spread-the-BS activity from PooStain's media bots. Promote division etc etc. PooStain needs his ally back in charge.

Charge Hunter Walz with something heinous!!
Hang on, he doesn't have an ex-drug addict son call Hunter... though that wouldn't stop Trump cultists from believing it.

FFS, why does BR allow empty posts from a twitchy touchpad!!

You underestimate the psyche of many Americans! 😂

They will, but more worrying is the wider geopolitical impact of a Trump win, it would be truly disastrous.

It would indeed, but given that Trumpists don't care about anywhere else in the world, what would they care about our fate (until a bomb drops on them)?

He’s objectively not a mentally well functioning human.
walking binfire of a man, regardless of politics.
I genuinely think every single person on this forum would be better at the job than him. It’s a low bar

We need a chart showing how various States have voted in forever. It feels like voting over there is so partisan there are only a handful of States where things are won and lost.

Completely agree, but what you said has a serious point to it. How can a man like Trump win the Presidency and then have the potential to do so again as a convicted felon and instigator of a coup to overthrow his own govt?
I still don't think people have got a real grip on how he has managed to garner so much support.

Complete lack of talent in the Republican party?

It's simple: it's a cult. He's leveraged both his media presence and the polarised political scene (with the backing of powerful media manipulators) to follow him whatever he does. To give him his due as far as base instinct is concerned, he was spot on about his comment on shooting people in Fifth Avenue.
I probably ought to read more stuff about cults, such as https://press-files.anu.edu.au/downloads/press/n2129/pdf/ch01.pdf?ref=luatkhoa.com ,but I do reckon that if Trump told followers to shoot themselves, some would.

There is something more fundamental going on if someone like him is basically 50/50 to get in.
Something profoundly wrong. That people are so something that around of voters genuinely think he's a better option. Whether it's tribalism or anti-intellectualism or i dunno, mass lead paint poisoning, there is something deeply deeply wrong with that place.

Yup. It shouldn't be close. The rejection of Trump-lite Johnson in the UK when people realised who he was has at least been one of the better things to happen in recent years here. I wonder if the Christian fanaticism over there is part of it: you don't need proof, you just need to believe harder.

I'd guess that part of the issue is, we've had 4 years of him, and actually, it wasn't totally disastrous (in some respects).
I think it's all about tribalism though.
