US Politics / Biden thread

He's gone a bit "birther" already, I give it a month before he starts preemptively questioning the integrity of the election process.

Betting odds or not, when a MAGA Tweeter says this, one's hopes for the best don't feel quite as pointless:

As I said when people were doom and gloom as Trump seemed so far ahead...it's still a long time till November.
0 -
He really is a mess. Struggled to find the word 'man'. Reckon he'd fail at "Person, man, woman, camera" now.

OK, sorry, last one from that complete car crash of a presser. I can only assume he's run out of his drugs as he seems strained, out of energy, and out of his mind. With Trump and Harris having agreed to debate on ABC, I think Harris's best tactic will be to feed him prompts, let him talk, and then just say "There, there, sure, grandpa."

Trump is objectively hilarious. That is the real problem.
He’s awful but I cannot help but laugh when he’s wanging on.

Funny you should mention drugs Brian, because he did seem to go from struggling to avoid slurring his words to 2016 venom in a short period of time, right around that TV debate.
I was thinking amphetamines or the odd sniff of charlie.

There was a former Celebrity Apprentice staffer who said Trump's drug of choice was adderall, with some methamphetamine thrown in for good measure.

I said when it looked as though Harris was going to get the nom that she stood a good chance, it is starting to feel like a major momentum shift.
It was interesting listening to Anthony Scaramucci. He is on the side of Trump pulling out. He says Trump's main worry is prison, if he feels he will lose, he will cut a deal with the Dems, a promise of no prison time (should Harris win) and he will exit the race.
0 -
Nah. He will run and win, or run and lose, create havoc and then try to cut a deal by filing a myriad of spurious motions in every criminal or civil case he faces or raises and bringing people to the table. This is just what he does.
Either way he is unable to conceive of losing so he's not going to pull out.

I can't see Harris wanting Trump to quit now or cutting any deals. The dream would be just to let him implode and to let him be held accountable for his many crimes.
I won't post the clip, as I'm Tweeted-out, but in the same presser he talks about being shot in "what they call the lobe" while repeatedly holding the upper part of his ear where the bandage was. I'd suggest that someone who doesn't even know where the ear lobe is probably shouldn't be POTUS.

No, I don't think it will happen. I agree that Harris would relish beating him in a Presidential race.
I don't want to get over confident but I am starting to feel this may not be as gut wrenchingly close in the end as we all fear.

Most likely, wonder where Rudy Giuliani is now, Trump might need his expert legal counsel....

The thing against the Trump cuts a deal theory is still who can give him a deal that doesn't want him running? He may want a deal but I can't see hom being offered one.
I still think it's too close anyway - as Rick implies we can laugh at him and think he's insane but haven't we been doing that for years yet he's still in with a chance. He is funny, people do rate his last presidency above Biden's current one and underestimating him would be a mistake. That said Id bet against him too.

Re how close it might be could well be related to how the media still cover Trump...

Well I suspect the mooch can charm his way into these things...😂

He is actually worth listening to, not least as he has a self-awareness and self-deprecating humour lacking from many commentators.
I think it's very important to assume that Trump can still win via a mixture of people voting for unicorns and the ultrawealthy wanting even more wealth - it's the same dynamic that persuaded the left-behinds to vote for Brexit and end up with the car crash we had here, but with the added element of a cult-like mentality for Trump.

Alastair Campbell is a respected commentator on how to fix what's gone wrong at the heart of government. Playing the O2. The world's gone mad.

He could have said all that in about 2 sentences without treating the audience like a class of primary school children.

Can't stand him
I don't mind Stewart he seems to have a degree of intellectual curiosity about issues and can give his opinion without an implied assumption you are an idiot if you disagree.

No disagreement here he's entertaining. However, I don't see a good path to Trump standing down.

Congestive heart failure, a stroke, prison time and assassination all appear to be viable options that cannot be ruled out.

Standing down voluntarily

I don't see that as having a non zero probability, so I didn't include it.

The mooch was considered to be the biggest loud mouth ever to grace Wall Street, which says something, and it was a source of great amusement to finance people that someone so interested in self promotion as Trump would appoint the remaining gobbiest man in NYC who is probably Trumps only rival to self promotion,
Honestly, his resurrection as a political commentator is as remarkable as it is stupid.

Have to admit, I do find the mooch quite amusing, particularly his anti Trump rants. To be fair he does also clearly have some good insider info as well.

Yes he's ok - he does repeat himself but who doesn't - these weekly podcasts that have a pair of presenters and no guests do tend to get a bit samey once you know exactly what the presenter is going to say about any given subject. Might be better with a small team with different world views who rotate.

I'd agree, but I guess that with the polarised debate, it's quite hard to get someone who's not already strongly for or against Trump: the anti-Trump Republicans are as strongly opposed to him as Democrats. It would be a much healthier debate if someone like Liz Cheney were the nominee - strongly conservative but not willing to torch the constitution and all norms.
