It is remarkable how dominant the brits are. I see a Brit on the track and just assume “ah yeah going for gold”

Jack Carlin is RAPID.
Half a second behind the Aussie team when he started his turn, comes in nearly .2 quicker
Now to see how the Orange Machine does

New Olympic record for the Netherlands

Honestly, they should probably either standardise equipment or implement an RnD budget like in F1. These bikes are all meant to be for sale to general public, but they cost 50-60 grand and if you tried to buy one I bet you'd find they were sold out.

The Japanese team bikes with the left hand drive apparently cost £108,000 each.

Hatch hyperbole heaven again.
It got boring watching all those new world records.

Feel sorry for whoever tried to keep the Wikipedia page up to date during all that - it's probably been automatically locked for vandalism.
Utterly silly stuff, and I'm glad the kiwis seemed to be happy for what they'd achieved.

Hard to believe that Katy Marchant is still competing. Rio is an age ago, when I first met her, with Becky, down at Newport velodrome.
Emma Finucane was coached by Becky’s sister, Rachel, before going to Manchester.

Feel they've (the organisers) been a bit unlucky there - surprised there's no reserve but I guess if it's a late call.

As ever Xavier Disley has the graphs you need for the team pursuit

I still can't quite fathom the speeds now, 66-67kmh average for a TP! That is essentially up there with the speeds in the sprint events. I remember when the gold standard was to get under the 4min mark and we are now 17 seconds under that.
The only time I ever get close to that speed is descending a mountain 😂

Huge part of it must be aerodynamics; equipment, air density, track conditions etc. (plus four of them drafting of course!). When you think that the best road TT riders are 12-14kmh slower on the road, surely it must be the variables that can be more tightly controlled in a velodrome.

Slovenia have another Pogacar, btw. Women's sport climbing: Janja Garnbret absolutely crushed the competition in the opening boulder round with a score of 99.6. She solved two of the boulders first attempt. Frighteningly, she's a better lead climber than boulderer.

I think you might find she’s not new on the scene as she’s won countless world cups and been world champion. She’s dominated the womens competition climbing scene for several years.

Katy's only 31, which feels fairly spring chicken-like to my ageing bones! Younger than VP was in London.

Also in womens climbing Britain’s Molly Thompson Smith is competing with a broken toe, she dropped a weight on it a couple of weeks ago.

I know. The same age as Becky. Both now mums.
And you are right, 31 is definitely spring chicken like to my old bones too!

Yeah, I wasn't suggesting she was new, she's the reigning Olympic champion for starters.

Off-topic maybe, but there appears to be a fair number of elite ladies coming back to elite competition after having started a family. One of the rowing podiums had a 50% hit rate. This feels like a good development to me. Definitely more feasible in an "Olympic sport" than something like football.

The women's team pursuit were being given a "bang on target" message by the coach every time, they were clearly aiming to get into the top 4 and nothing more. Looks fine to me.

Holy shit, what a great race in the men's team pursuit.
Edit: And an insane time in the other.

Matt HS looked very impressive in the 400m semi finals. Hoping he can do a Keeley and step up to the next level.

Laura Kenny tipped them for gold and she clearly has insider info on what times they have been posting in training.

Presumably had less of a clue what everybody else was posting though, so although she'll know if they're in the mix based on historic trends...

Did the GB team go out hard deliberately to get Denmark to push too hard in the middle of the race? The time swings were pretty big from the GB opening to the Danes at 3km and then back the other way. Can’t recall seeing it change so much in one race.

GB v Aus in the final feels like normal service has finally been resumed. Where has this Aussie form come from?
