Olympics 2024

Apparently Friday 26th July was the big getaway this year.

I knew quite a few in Paris - dozens - and I get their out of offices. It's all of August. Never July.

I thought so, judging by the reports of bouchons heading south on the A7 this weekend.

It’s a nicer place when virtually traffic free that’s for sure. I like parts of Paris but it does always shock me how scruffy it is, even their equivalent of Knightsbridge seems to have graffiti everywhere

I tell you what: Try driving down any of the North-South roads, same July weekend, next year.
Then we’ll talk again.

Exactly.

Women's rugby 7s has been a good watch this evening. Brits got done over but, interesting games.

Mind you, the Aussie v Ireland is looking a wee bit one sided...

It’s a shithole, never liked it.

Rather embarrassing for the triathlon.
€1.5bn spent to clean up the seine and a big downpour on the opening ceremony undoes half of it.

I saw the colour of the water yesterday and didn’t think it would be happening, the storm drains near the river stink of sewerage too. I read something that said they had a circuit using the Marne as a backup but we crossed that on the train yesterday and it looked just as bad. Surely they could have found a course that used a nice lake and taken the risk out of the equation?

Stadium for the hockey currently less than half full despite France playing Spain.

They need to have the swim somewhere where can get big crowds for the cycle and run. So they need it in Paris.

There’s a big lake in the Bois de Boulogne. Easy to then get an iconic lap for the bike and run surely?

You'd never know from the hotel I stayed at last night at the Parc des Expositions and the trains that there was anything special on.

I said the same yesterday. We were in central Paris and other than official vehicles, even more armed police and soldiers than normal and the foreign fans you could have missed it was going on. I don’t get why they bid for it and then give the whole thing a Gallic shrug (other than things they’re winning). You couldn’t miss it in London 2012, the whole city was branded.

Was having lunch in Paris not so long ago, and they made an observation that it's genuinely unusual to meet a Brit who is not involved in, or is interested in some kind of sport.
Said that in France it's a bit less universal. People like it, but it's sort of not expected for everyone to get into it and be a "good sport".

Apparently as an absolute last resort the triathlon will become a duathlon if they cannot swim in the Seine (this is not a windup!).

Quite funny that the rowing coverage is basically supported by absolute genetic freaks - Mo Sbihi and Matt Pinsent.

Though I get very annoyed with rowers talking about tactics and racing boats and not times.
Guys, if you race for the fastest time you can do, you will do the best you can do....
If you have energy left for a push, you should have gone harder to begin with.

That's what happened at the European champs in Spain last year.

I’ve heard the same said about bike racing. 🤔
Track or road, why don’t they just pedal as fast as they can.
0 -
I mean, on a bike you can save energy riding behind someone. No advantage to focusing on your opponent in a rowing race.

The Olympics control the branding so no use of anything related is allowed. The only reason it would have been more present in London would have been because of events being held more centrally and all the helpers pointing people in the right direction.

Interesting, didn't know that. I guess something is better than nothing but as it would no longer be a Triathlon, surely as a Triathlete, any medal you won wouldn't feel quite the same.

All Brit crews who have had semis have got through to the final. 3 crews left to race for the final. Pretty good so far.

By the looks of things we could be on for quite a medal haul in the rowing again.

Can't the Cox have oars too and help out a bit? Seems a bit lazy.
